The worst writer in the history of video games, lead designer on Fallout 4. He has no respect for lore.
>Emil Pagliarulo: So… I was left to my own devices for way too long. Way longer than I should have. Ah, and that was the same of all the quests: the Fighters Guild, the Mages Guild, the Thieves Guild. Umm, so I'm in my little zone just working on the Dark Brotherhood and I looked at the Dark Brotherhood fiction and stuff from Morrowind and, I was like, it doesn't really fit what I want to do. I want to change the lore so, I'm like, I ask Todd, "Hey, can I make changes?" and he's like "'Hey, go ahead. Go nuts." and I'm like "Alright."
Can anyone tell me what the Dark Brotherhood was like in Morrowind? I'm a Fallout guy so I hate him for that shit, but I'd like to know how he shit on the Elder Scrolls as well.

The Dark Brotherhood in Morrowind was founded as an offshoot of the Morag Tong, who are basically "above the law" assassins who have a rigid system in place to let them legally kill people. The founder of the Dark Brotherhood thought that was stupid and that they should just kill whomever they're paid to kill.
The Nightmother is just an ordinary enemy NPC, albeit the highest leveled one in the Dark Brotherhood faction and the leader of the assassins you fight in Mournhold. I think it's stated or implied that she's not even the only Nightmother in the Dark Brotherhood, but I can't recall. She was certainly not some deific manifiestation of the will of Sithis or whatever. In fact, I don't remember the Dark Brotherhood in Morrowind having religious connections at all, to contrast them with the Mephala following the Morag Tong had.
But it's been a long fucking time since I've played Morrowind, so I'm probably wrong.

It is. The level scaling, while not as abhorrent as Oblivion's, is still bad. The combat is still floaty and simple as hell. Dungeons are incredibly formulaic. It's barely an rpg. The quests are shit, and the writing is terrible. There are several moments where you're forced into a HL2-style ingame cutscene. It's not a good rpg, it's not a good action game, it's not a good sandbox. It fails at everything it sets out to do.

They were just random hired assassins with high level gear that pushed your shit in the moment you hit, like, level 5 if you had the Tribunal expansion installed. They weren't in the base game, since the Dark Brotherhood were forbidden from operating in Morrowind since assassinations were handled through a state sanctioned assassins guild called the Morag Tong. If you had a writ of execution, you could just walk up to someone in public and knock their head off with a warhammer and the guards would just tip their hat and say "g'day to you n'wah".

> what the Dark Brotherhood was like in Morrowind?
The Dark Brotherhood in Morrowind was the opposition to the Morag Tong (The kingdom-sanctioned, but not empire-sanctioned, assassin guild of Morrowind, which plays an important part of House affairs.) The player could never join the Dark Brotherhood, only the Morag Tong, which actually complements every other faction and the main quest line very well. As fair as lore is concerned, its summed up as they are a splinter from the Morag Tong, involved in a shadow war in Morrowind, and worship Sithis over Mephala. Unlike in Oblivion, the "Night Mother" was not an object of worship, but the top rank (which was carried over from Daggerfall).
In Tribunal, they appear again, in their first iteration of their dark garb. King Hlaalu Helseth hires them to kill the player, and emphasizes the business arrangements they have with Kingdom and Empire level nobility.
Arguably, there is no discontinuation in lore, save for the "night mother" and everything that is associated with it. Oblivion was the game that actually fleshed out this faction.
I personally hated the direction Oblivion took the Brotherhood compared to the Morag Tong. It felt way too sadistic for my tastes.

Well, if you had the first expansion pack they'd teleport into your bedroom at night, stab you a couple times and then never bother you again. I'm over-generalizing but they had very limited presence.
Now, what you SHOULD have asked is:
>Can anyone tell me what the Dark Brotherhood was like in Daggerfall?
And the answer to that more pertinent question would basically be that they were a hidden society of murderers who took their jobs very seriously. Much less cartoon-like than what they were in Oblivion…however, given how fucking boring Oblivion is they are really the only memorable part of the game. To a lesser extent the Thieves Guild as well.

combat is still trash while removing character building in favor of some watered down restrictive perk system. the faction quests were a joke in either being too short or making no sense and sometimes both. npcs no longer have schedules like they did in oblivion where the npcs had weekly things they did, traveling to other cities, trading and doing skooma deals even. it made oblivion feel more alive since a lot of the schedules of the npcs had absolutely nothing to do with any quest. in oblivion you could find lore of cities just by the schedules of npcs without any text or quests telling you. it was incredible and it makes sense that subhumans can't appreciate the environmental story telling of oblivion

Skyrim recycles the same few dungeons over and over, with a shameful enemy variety which amounts to very little as they all abide by the same ranged/mage or melee AI, with the most exotic being a melee enemy with a situational ranged attack. Most questlines are boring radiant garbage and there's only one way to pursue most of them, which is go to dungeon, kill things, and bring back mcguffin. Crafting is either useless filler that advances your scaling enemies ahead of you or absolutely broken shit (but Morrowind wasn't well-balanced either). The environments are fine and the OST is passable, if forgettable. Roleplaying hardly exists: things like dialogue and race have little to no effect on anything, and the lack of attributes makes your character a Jack of All Trades, so rather than specializing and making a character you're just kind of a guy that does stuff, with your character only mattering when you go into third person, put on Forsworn armour, and jack off to your retarded argonian ass.
