Okay, but that doesn't answer my question. Your examples of WRPGs also have fixed roles, such as JC Denton. Sure you have more choices to make in regards to how he acts, but you don't get to choose very much because it would destroy the story the developers were telling. JRPGs just tend to take that to an extreme, with some offering some choices here or there and some (most of the ones in that image for example) falling on the worst end of that extreme. DQ games in particular are overrated boring games and have been since the very first entry in the series. DQ just happened to be released at the right time there to gain its pedestal and the lack of too much thinking about choices is favored by the overworked Japanese. This is also why grinding in JRPGs is so common, because it is basically the only form of growth the makes sense to people who do repetitive work 60 hours a week and don't have a lot of mental energy left when it comes to their off time.

Every move you make matters and you need to know when to defend, when to attack, how you can manipulate your opponents, and various other things. Best example of a game like that is SMT Nocturne imo.
