My theory has always been that Battle Royale is essentially gambling combined with loads of instant gratification.
The luck-based nature of it keeps you hooked, because surely in the next round you'll get more lucky and find some good loot quickly.
If you do really bad, you can also easily blame it on bad luck, so you won't quit playing because you're bad as quickly in more skill-based games.
If you don't die instantly, you'll always feel good about yourself. Since dying seems, at least on the surface, more impactful than in other games, getting any kill is rewarding in itself, and more personal, knowing that dude is out and has to start all over again. If, however, you just avoid combat, you can easily place in at least the top50, if not higher, which to a moderate player already feels nice, since you did better than half of the players.

This game is basically the new Team Fortress, that's why it's so popular. Not to mention that it's free to play. So you can pretty much get whatever you want out of it gameplay-wise without having to spend much money. But it also has a cartoony almost Pixar/ DreamWorks like art style.
