There are plenty of people who speak in the public chat channels looking for teammates. Joining them is as easy as clicking the 'join lobby' button which they link. Alternatively you could put yourself out there, or, add the people you enjoy playing with to your friends list and invite them to play with you when you are both online.

Probably because a thread once per year is fine enough and most people have something to participate and actually talk about outside of shared experiences.Newfags from the second or third exodus onward made talking about this game difficult, with their autism trying to make the thread reach the bump limit.
Said newfags eventually started acting like oldfags later, pretending dota threads weren't made before the second exodus because re-imagining history is what new settlers like to do.
Finally the newer patches have driven people off, but that's way after Dota discussion was unofficially agreed to be relegated for TI only by most people involved and many moved on to other games eventually. Well the thing is, matchmaking was kind of added to solve an issue that really only existed because of an earlier matchmaking attempt: quickplay. Which created the issue of just COMPLETE CANCER servers with sourcemod plugins to open up the message of the day to play an add every couple seconds

Matchmaking in Left 4 Dead 2 works very well. You can set all kinds of settings up, like "official servers only" or "community servers only". The only issue with l4d2 matchmaking was that they mods where spread all over the place and the retarded community was unable to find some.
Follow the liter was the second most popular game mode. You would always find teammates, no matter when you searched. But then Valve rearranged the game mods and pushed Follow the liter all the way back to replace it with some other game mode. Follow the liter basically died and the second most played game mode was never played again. Only people who knew each other could organize follow the liter games because all servers where empty.

They try to. But if there aren't enough players out there they will still match you with whatever they can find. Also in EU you have the issue that all servers are very close to each other. There is like a 5 ping difference between Russia and EU West. Your 20 ping teammate could be russian or a brit and you would be unable to tell from ping alone.
That said I noticed that Valve tries to match people from the same region into the same team. I wanted to stream snipe into a twitch streamer a few times and I always ended up in his team.
