9ad102  No.15576108

I've quit and restarted Dragon Quest XI six or seven times now and am considering doing so an eighth time. This was after promising myself that I wasn't going to ruin it like I did BotW.

Mabe it's autism, maybe it's mild OCD, but when I'm invested in a game it feels like I have to play it the right way- the problem being that no matter what I do it never feels right.

I don't know what this is but I can tell you it's unnecessary… I enjoy it just fine spending a bunch of time on it. Besides, it'll last you for like 4 months this way. Just get it over with.

What exactly prompts you to restart it?

I didn't get this with DQXI. Being thorough in your explorations, talking to everyone etc. certainly adds to your total playtime but it's honestly very manageable in this game. Fighting an enemy once is enough to fill out all it's bestiary info, rare drops and all. It's easy to find specific crafting materials and it doesn't take a ridiculous amount of time to update your gear. It KNOWS that a lot of players are going to feel forced to 100% it, and makes sure they're able to do so without wanting to kill themselves before the end. So go for it.

Yes, I'm well aware it's me and not the game and that this much indecisiveness and agonizing over something as simple as whether or not to talk to townsfolk or check inside a building for loot is not normal.

I don't understand the fervent fellating of this game at all. I'm only at not-italy but, while I like the party characters, the story is so nonexistent that I can't bring myself to give enough of a shit to even play for more than a few hours at a time without getting put to sleep. I keep hearing people compare this to other really big shit that I liked but see zero of the qualities of those at all in this. I'm not even hearing the usual "it gets better after X hours" so I have to assume they're enjoying it from moment 1 and I just can't see how that's even possible with a game that's so damn dull so far.

>Oh he's from fucking kotaku

While I fucking hate Kotaku, Tim's really good at deconstructing some games. He has an excellent video picking apart the Steam version of Chrono Trigger and his review for Dragon Quest XI is probably the most informative and in-depth review you'll ever see. The guy played the Japanese version twice and played about 1/3 of the American version before making his review. He probably is the best possible person to review the game. He's a scrawny fucking hipster who I don't agree with politically, but his JRPG analysis is top notch.

>>15576108

>tim rogers article where he recommends playing it for about an hour a day

Despite what I just said about Tim Rogers, don't do this. I put 36 hours in the game in two days(I have insomnia). You'll get nowhere playing an hour or two at a time.

>>15593252

>I just can't see how that's even possible with a game that's so damn dull so far.

Dragon Quest is a comfy series. DQ11 is a little on the slow side, so I can see why some people are turned off by it. The last mainline console Dragon Quest that hit the US was 8, and that's really slow moving, too.

>I have to assume they're enjoying it from moment 1

It does everything I want it to do. It has more of the same shit I've seen for hundreds of hours in a Dragon Quest game. It has the great monster designs that I love and more, it has some okay music by Dragon Quest standards, but the in-game versions are lacking, it's a whimsical adventure that only subverts expectations a handful of times, which is strange by Dragon Quest standards, and is overall a pretty comfortable game.

>>15593259

>The vast majority of people praising it either never played another game in the series or are so god damned starved for a new entry in the series they're willing to but up with its mediocrity. It definitely gets more interesting later on but I'd never say it gets out of the 6-7/10 range.

I'm the latter. I've finished DQ 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8,9, and some of the spinoff games. Dragon Quest 11 is a pretty alright game. It's a solid 7 for me, despite some minor complaints, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. With the main game and the post game, I have 95 hours in. It's a solid game that's bogged down by a cumbersome menu, poorly sampled midi, a lack of original music, some character designs that are much to be desired, and an arbitrarily restrictive and obtuse crafting system that starves you of recipes for large chunks of the game. All that aside, I still really enjoyed the game.

>>15593265

>The game is a disappointment by the series standards.

It's a solid 4th place for me. DQ 3, 5, and 8 are my favorites, and not in that particular order.

Game's fine. I don't understand the hatred for it. It's not revolutionary by any means, but then again, it's Dragon Quest. They don't stray from the formula much.

Just continue from where you've left off ou absolute retard, you don't need to play it exclusively until you clear it.

Also, if you've nothing else to do don't limit yourself, play as much as you want.

It's a long ass game if you try explore it as much as you can.

There's literally no need to try to clear it fast, specially when you're trting to explore and interact at leisure, it's counter productive.

If it starts feeling like a chore, either play something else or stop trying to achieve completion, there's no worthwhile prize for completing all the quests, or getting all the medals, or reading all books, or whatever if doing it wasn't fun to do.

It's all gonna be pointless and gone after you clear it the game. What you want is good memories to remember the fun you had with it, not bad memories of the time you had to do boring shit just to feel like you did something worthwhile.

2. Final Fantasy VII

3. Dragon Quest XI

4. Mega Man Battle Network 3

5 The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC

I consider each game to have very few to no flaws, but accept that people may for example consider a flaw of Chrono Trigger to be too easy, or Trails in the Sky SC to be Too Slow. Furthermore, each game has physically moved me in some way of my life.

And yes, I am biased, I picked 5 JRPGs, and yes I Have played Dragon Quest V, and hold the game in high regard, and yes I have played all of the Final Fantasy games besides XV (Because it's a horrible, irredeemable game) and consider that each one of them have glaring flaws that FFVII do not possess.

It will drop off once you have played more than 5 games. It's not even top 10 in Dragon Quest games.

>Any RTS game

>Actively play worse with races that are human or have human-like intelligence because I can't stand hearing them die (to take one example: Rather run back one vehicle back to base and repair it over the course of one minute when I could get a brand-new one to the front in no more than half the time

>Game suddenly seems incredibly easy when playing as a horde/swarm race like Tyranids or Zerg where units are just mindless fodder that you can sacrifice and replace so long as it is strategically convenient for you

How is bathing in blood not heretical? That's right up Khorne's alley.

>FF XV is irredeemable

that's not actually entirely true. In fact it would be a great game if the combat wasn't absolutely garbage. In fact if the combat was just slightly better I would even call it a good game. However being that the combat is literally holding Square to auto attack Hold Circle to auto block it spoils the whole experience. FFXV had so much potential to be great that this super casual design choice is why it sucks double dongs. And even with all that said it's still a better game than FFXIII for the map design, worldbuilding, characters and exploration alone.

>any game that lets you go back to beginner areas or obtain godlike power

>strip down to nothing, unequip weapons

>beat the shit out of everything using fists

>take zero damage

It’s stupid but it’s always amusing to be able to murder huge monsters just because I’m overleveled
