And the entirety of Paragon Studios gutted. While still turning a profit and preparing a large new content update, no less! And with giant ingame torchfire vigils as the entire community pleads everything from, 'don't shut this down, we'll pay for server maintenance, we'll run our own, we'll collectively buy out the IP, we'll suck your dick NCSoft.' I missed out on all of that and only heard in the aftermath, but it's surreal what happened to Paragon and the franchise. Had it been left to continue running and NCSoft just invested in some extra server architecture for what it believed to be its super-profitable new contenders, I wonder where City of Heroes would be now.
It was shut down only a few months after the first Avengers movie, more or less right with or before the start of the normalfag capeshit explosion that'd been preceded by Nolan Batman and Marvel's 'muh cinematic universe' individual hero films. Would it have blown up further, with its goofy community of altitis minmaxers and roleplayers getting burgeoned by more of their own once the FoTM waves die down, or just been swamped in pure refuse normalfaggotry that never bothered leaving? How stupid do those dirty Koreans feel about making every wrong decision they could in this situation and ducking directly under this golden tide of business opportunity?

Attunements are just another word for content unlocks. In which, you had to do a bunch of banal, mundane shit in order to access the next step of whatever stupid questline it requires.
In WildStar's case, they basically took the attunement steps from WoW, several of those things required running raids with 40 people. That wasn't so much an issue with WoW at the time, because there were thousands upon thousands of people in any server, at any given time.
In WildStar's case, the average server population was about 235, the majority of that population was under level 50. There was no LFG tool, you had to spam every zone to try to get people to join, and even raid guilds had a hard time doing stuff because the population was so fucked. Everyone had to basically commit themselves to doing their raids during absolute primetime hours for the chance of having enough server population online to do it, or it isn't happening at all.
To make shit even worse, WildStar had such an abysmal QA and an equally awful engine, it barely supported raid encounters. Bosses would reset at random points mid-fight, or if any player happened to walk into a certain radius in the bossfight room, the boss would freeze up, and no longer be encounterable. (This required a server reset, which they only did during weekly maintenance.)
The entire game was a shitshow, from start to finish. They couldn't even get housing right, which was one of their most touted features. They put massive invisible borders around each piece of furniture, so you could never even set on barstools at your own fucking bar, unless you were content with floating five feet in the air above the bar you're supposed to even be sitting at. You couldn't even stand between your own fucking barstools. Pic related.

Disney/Marvel had nothing to do with its closure, it's worse than that. NCSoft shut it down because they thought that it would increase the market share for Aion, which was already well-irrelevant in the west by that point anyway. They just wanted to make it appear like CoX couldn't compete with the success of Aion, which was still stupidly popular with chinks and the dogeaters in Korea. Appeasement at its worst, to the detriment of the rest of the world.

Which is a shame. Since I really did enjoy the aesthetics. They managed to be stylized without being a total eyesore Unlike wow which has a cartoon artstyle but is ugly as fuck with the new models imo
And I dont think the atunement shit is what killed the game honestly. What killed the game was just it tried to be a wowkiller when literally EVERYTHING was marketing itself as a wowkiller. They also decided to release it AT THE SAME TIME AS A NEW WOW EXPANSION.

>even after all that shilling, people drop it immediately

My favorite anecdote about Wildstar is about a coworker at the place I was working at the time. He could not stop shilling the damn thing, going on and on about how it was going to dethrone WoW, how it was so much better than all other MMOs, how it was going to revolutionize the genre, and so on. He made a huge deal about how he was joining up with Death and Taxes, who were supposedly jumping ship from WoW to make a fresh start on Wildstar (whether they were the actual guild from back in the day is something I never bothered to look into because I didn't care that much). I just smiled and nodded and laughed at his delusions in my head. After it released, he never talked about it again.
To the devs at Carbine: I hope it was worth the last thirteen years of your lives, producing one of the greatest MMO flops of recent memory. Bravo.

Under ideal conditions, it'll take you about three weeks if you have a group of friends that are consistent.
And by ideal conditions, I mean that it's contingent on absolutely nothing fucking up. You have to kill ten world bosses, several of those either getting camped, kited, or otherwise bugging into the terrain and waiting for it to reset. Or you can try and glitch it with ranged attacks and pull it to a reset radius.
Rep grinds for each thing takes about 1.5 weeks if you're on it consistently, and wait out some of the gated shit. Otherwise, it'll take you about upwards of four weeks if you're super unlucky.
Note: Attunement isn't account-wide. It's per character. So, if you intended to try and get a healer to help out your raid crew, you've just set everyone back by a month.
The whole thing was completely demoralizing, between the constant fuckups in attunement, and the continual, unavoidable fuckups in the raids themselves. Carbine never addressed any of it beyond "we're looking into it". At the end of the day, between that garbage, and something like WoW, the choice is pretty fucking clear. WildStar, at its core, is WoW that looks worse, runs worse, and above all, plays worse. So at that point, what's even the point? Just once again proves that NCSoft can't into games, and their filthy gook hands don't deserve a fucking dime. Good riddance.

FFXIV got this kind of right. They have tutorial dungeons that instill some basics and dungeons that increase in complexity and difficulty as you go on all the way up to raids. Best part is the vast majority of them are mandatory for the Main Story Quest. You will spend a lot of time solo learning your class, but in order to progress you must take part in group content and learn to work with others regularly.
Of course the combat is boring for the majority of leveling and the content isn't particularly hard (barring some exceptions), and you're playing with cross-realm randoms who you'll never see again.

>FFXIV got this kind of right
Not even close. I'm talking about how they essentially throw the main world of the game to the dogs by making it a completely non-threatening slog that you can solo through until cap, usually without even exploring at all thanks to quest markers. Whereas in EQ or FFXI you could only do this with certain classes and even then it was nowhere near as efficient because the world was too dangerous and there were penalties for dying, not to mention being forced to explore. I played FFXIV, I don't even remember anything from the leveling slog, whereas I still have fond memories of previous MMOs that tried to murder you all the time and forced you to compete with other groups for resources.
Basically, everyone who signs into an MMO to solo is untermenschen and now the genre caters to them. Why the hell someone hasn't reversed this trend is beyond me, the hardcore communities would flock to it and make it the next big thing.

Tried this piece of shit when it was in beta with few old friends all the way from eq since we heard game would have 40 man raiding and be "hardcore cupcake". Well turns out we lasted to about lvl 20 or so before we wrote off this garbage forever for things like:
>humour that would make reddit cringe
>combat was nothing but a neonlight show that never ever ended
>braindead solo game (honestly how could they expect people to form social connections to ever do 40 man raids when you can solo everything)
>generic and bland as hell lore
>you are the savior of the universe special snowflake (just like everyone else)
>players split to two factions in pve servers for no other reason than wow did it
at least some of the models looked sexy unlike the world they inhabited

Really it wouldn't even be a problem if the game just had multiple areas to accommodate different playstiles, like a safe type zone outside of the city or a dangerous frontier type location for more daring players but that would disturb the "start game level RAID RAID RAID" song and dance the entire genre seems to be stuck in.

thats another sad as fuck truth about this (((industry))) no room for experimentation of innovation its all fallow the market leader bulllshit
Online RPGa won't evolve until wow stops being profitable and dies/gets replaced by a sequel or (god forbid) somthing "new". for over a decade the FPS/Shooter genre has been stagnant everyone trying to ape either COD or Battlefield, now the genre is all about Battle Royale with even the twin military FPS behemoths both chasing down Fortnight and Pubg. other "wonderful" trends include loot-box shekel grabbing. cut and paste Sony soy adventures in the forest, garbage DLC's that still cost way too much mixed with (best value!) season "pass" horse shit that's only real reason for existence is to push the average 60$ game up to $100+ while actually having about the same or even less content then previous games/generations of games.

Except in this case it's something that has already been done but just hasn't been copied because ????

There is plenty of innovation in succesful titles.
You even mention battle royales, and those weren't really a thing a short time ago.

Yeah but neither was Cod multiplayer, and then that had to be the multiplayer everybody was chasing. That's the problem with current-day Battle Royale. Everybody's just going to copy it and run it into the ground instead of using that as a jumping off point for something new and innovative. Because they're too afraid to stray from any successful formula for fear of failure.

But that's old news, every time there's a new cool game there's many lazy imitations and maybe two good ones.
See the days of "everyone can be the next WoW"

Totally possible. Don't know if it's ever happened though.
I remember one time I was playing GoldenEye with three friends and, being the autist I was even as a kid, I was wiping the floor with them so we did 3v1 (me being the 1). I ended up owning them so hard that I literally put the controller down (went for a choccy milk IIRC) for the last few minutes of the ten minute round and I could not die and respawn quick enough for them to get enough points to break my lead.
