The game is fun, but it's bogged down by the leveling system. You're pretty much hard gated by the level of the server you're playing on. Once you get a few levels above the level of the server, you stop getting meaningful xp and gear from the areas. The only way to level up the servers is based on conjecture at best, and guess work at worst. It's thought to be done by grinding all the monster gates in all the various element type areas to raise the element level of each element on the server. I'm probably butchering this explanation, but it's been a few years. The game itsself was really fun and can be played cross platform between PC emulator and softmodded ps2. I used the soft modded ps2 to great effect. If someone found a way to hack a server and raise it to max level, of happily play with you guys again.

dot heck was inspired by PSO. But the only enjoyment you'll get out of fragment is if you played the original 4 games. Gameplay wise you're correct in that claim.
