This actually sounds great, not just standard emulation but actually utilising the modern hardware to produce a more updated yet still authentic experience. This is what I love doing when emulating PS1 and PS2 games on PC, they look amazing when you tweak graphics settings, smooth out polygons and upscale everything to 1080p

As for PS5 though, definitely still too early to be talking about that. The PS4 is only 4 years old and I think it's built to last a bit longer than previous generation consoles.

Most of what's decent on it is Vita ports and remakes, not to mention Sony has software emulators for PS1 to PS3 games that run on PS4 but they didn't let anyone use so they could sell you a subscription to their game streaming service.

Well, the DS is the most successful console of all time. That, and it was actually 7 years, 2004 to 2011, the 3DS just took two years to pick up steam.

It's really interesting though. Gameboy lasted nine, GBC lasted two, GBA lasted three, DS lasted seven and 3DS six.

The PSP as well lasted seven years, same time frame as DS, and Vita we can say lasted six, since it's dead.

The issue with the Xbox emulator is, well first of all - it's a piece of shit that only works really well with a ton of tweaking. So each game basically needs it's own tweaked configuration or build. Secondly, Microsoft in their infinite wisdom, decided that BC games wouldn't run from the disk - but would instead download and install a digital copy of the game from their storefront - using the physical disk as an unlock/DRM. Even if you own the disk, the digital version still counts as a new distribution - which MS may not have permission from the publisher for - or which art/music/IP licensing may have expired for. So those games, like OutRun 2 (which lost the Ferrari license) will never come to the Xbox BC compatibility program.

Microsoft COULD make a generalized emulator that works well - I'm sure, but they're not going to dump money into a project which will not make them money in return. None of the Xbox 360 games which never recieved a digital version that can still be bought on the MS store will ever make it into the Xbox One BC lineup. Maybe next gen, they'll add support, but that's going to heavily depend on how Sony handles BC… but this gen, with Sony completely dropping the ball with their streaming BS, MS doesn't have to really compete. Just having any real BC solution across generations is enough to piss in Sony's faces.

1. PC gaming is the vector of infection for every disaster that happened to gaming. Mmporgs attracted women because of their social, e-sports are normalfag tier, and indie gaming is where marxists took root.

I don't know how they managed to patent HD texture packs when N64 emulators have offered basically the same mechanism for 15+ years.

This is probably going to be an AMD Zen-based APU that will be directly backwards compatible with the PS4, with some work on either the hardware (semi-custom backwards compatible GPU) or software (shader recompilation) to run PS4 shaders and command lists. The future of game consoles is increasingly looking like manufacturers will "marry" themselves to a certain chipset manufacturer (AMD for Sony and MS, NVIDIA for Nintendo), stick mostly to a standard off-the-shelf architecture, and release incremental upgrades every few years. The new system launches with the existing library intact + possible performance improvements for last-gen games, while the old system gets to hold onto a few more years of support as technical difficulties in "backporting" is obviously much lesser between chipsets in the same family vs. the drastic changes of past gens. After launch the PS4 will probably receive 1-3 more "cycles" of AAA games before the graphics whore devs feel they're being held back and drop support, while more niche and less demanding games (like from mid-tier japanese devs) will keep coming for years to come.

The PS4 Pro and XBone-X were odd steps but today, 5 years from the launch of the original PS4/XBONE models, it makes sense that technology has progressed far enough to make a meaningful improvement over them. What I find more interesting are the rumors that Nintendo will be releasing a "New Switch" in 2019 or 2020, just 2 or 3 years after the original launch, to keep pace with the PS5. It makes some sense, as the Switch today can just barely handle AAA multiplats, so they will need a lot more power (on par with a PS4, perhaps) for Nintendo to continue receiving third party support. This is much more likely to piss off consumers than the PS5 will, but you never know, normalfags will probably eat it up as they're already used to upgrading their phones every two years.

As for technical speculation, IMHO the greatest technological advancement made since development of the PS4 started has been the plummeting cost of high-capacity SSDs. Sony would be wise to use a modestly-sized SSD (maybe 128-256gb) as a cache for a traditional hard drive. With a direct contract with a drive manufacturer, they could get a much better deal that is not significantly more expensive than a comparable SATA drive, or even contract a chipset manufacturer directly and produce their own SSDs, as most non-Samsung/Intel SSDs are based on off-the-shelf chipsets and reference designs anyway.

The other major possibility is if AMD has anything comparable to NVIDIA's raytracing and deep learning acceleration hardware in development. I highly doubt they will have anything ready until the "PS5 Pro" at the earliest, therefore it will probably be another gen or half-gen before AAA devs really try to push raytracing on us.

1.) You can't compare the PS4 to the PS3 because the PS3 was the worst selling console of that gen and devs hated it
