I wish they did an Atelier Musou, but dunno how well it'd sell. Alchemists can find items on the field to later process into items, weapons and whatnot, while not-alchemists cannot use items but can be healed by an alchemist commander , or have overall better stats than the alchemists, while they have to rely more on the items to make up for their limited offensive abilities. Sterk can have musou attacks with his pigeons, or a pigeon is his right-hand man. It'd be cool to have the older alchemists as 3D characters.

Whose hyped for Warriors Orochi 4? Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends brings back bodyguards in the form of three slots you can fill with any officer in the game. In order to get them you have to play Ambition Mode, and in order to grind them up, you have to "use" your other officers, who then scamper off and you have to go get them all over again.
It's a very odd system, but it does have benefits like passive buffs and triggerable strategies.

The Orochi games always have many characters that are left out plot wise.
What I'm hoping for is that they actually release an Ultimate version with ton's of characters from their other IPs like they did with WO3U.
I'm dying to see a Monster Trainer character from Monster Rancher with like 3 monsters, each one tied to one button and the inclusion of more Zill O'll, Atelier, and Night's of Azure characters.

That's one that stings so fucking much. That game came out during the days when Koei was trying to find a regular, consistent and proper footing in the west and because Zil O'll got shat on so hard and overly compared to Final Fantasy Koei got scared and didn't even bother with it. What's worse is several studios actually wanted to do the localization. This fear then carried over with Infinite and Plus. Sucks because Infinite Plus was such a great game with gameplay, music, character design, map and world design and even story and character development.
And with Trinity, had the base game been successful they were planning to release the "Real" version with more playable characters, more move sets, a connecting world map and open towns that is was all fully exploreable and get rid of the menu towns and menu world map.
What hurt the most was because Trinity was so hated on by journos in the west they cancelled plans to remake infinite plus using the Trinity design and gameplay.

Pretty much everything sadly was getting compared to Final Fantasy VII and Square in general, to a point some would even get derided as "filler series" as if the only value lay in killing time between what big budget, highly anticipated games would be put out by Square. I'd wager it was very much that import review that broke the spirit though.
>What hurt the most was because Trinity was so hated on by journos in the west they cancelled plans to remake infinite plus using the Trinity design and gameplay.
Wouldn't it have also had to be badly received in the east too for that sort of treatment (which admittedly doesn't necessarily keep a game from still coming west)? Just saying, since they could well have gone ahead and made Infinite Plus Trinity or whatever you wan to call it, and just leave it overseas because clearly "we wouldn't like it." Then again, similar happened with Glory of Heracles V: most "professional" reviewers, at least here in the west, considered it to be outdated even at launch, thus it sold like shit, and NoJ has since killed the series, doing nothing with it for the last decade aside from putting an arranged song into Smash 4 and Wii U rereleases for III and IV. And that's after they went to the trouble of buying both the rights and team after Data-East went under.

I know I saw an import copy of some TK crossover musou a while back with at least one Atelier in it. Anyhow, it strikes me that perhaps JRPG musou spinoffs just haven't been as popular a spin off vector. Main one I can recall prior to DQH being Tales of the Heroes: Twin Brave. According to what I'm reading, it was notably not a popular spinoff for the series (speculation being due to less character interaction and less interest from women, Tales having a notable fujoshit base in Japan). Dragon Quest Heroes would take another three years, and then you've got Fire Emblem Warriors last year. Point being, it certainly seems like licensing anime for the treatment seems like it's been the more prevalent route in the past.

I've been hearing the exact opposite in some cases. The changes like sacred treasures sometimes don't make up for the removal of R1 moves. The mystics/WO originals got fucked as far as changes, since they don't get the special moves granted to the DW cast introduced in 8, like EX moves, and the SW cast in 4, which got godspeed attacks.

9 was the first game I only played through one character and that was it. I've wanted an open world DW game for years and they fuck it up with that bullshit combat system. DW8 had the single best combat system in any of the DW games. They could have just improved that system by giving all characters 1 favorite weapon with 2 EX attacks, 1 sub weapon with 1 EX attack and then a third weapon with no EX attacks, (Think Cao Pi with his dual sword for 2 EX, the long sword that Simy Shi uses with 1 Ex and any other weapon with no EX). Just keep the previous battle system and toss it into the open world that was 9. That's it. Maybe improve the areas where major battles take place so they are slightly unique like the other Dynasty Warriors games.

Considering it's troubled development and continuous failure to find its own identity (musou clone -> ninja gaiden clone -> finally mix of NG, Souls and Diablo clones) I think that the end result is a fluke.
It just so happened to work out. I don't think they quite understood how they made it.
Chances are Nioh 2 will follow Dark Souls 2 route where they go through with just one aspect of the game, while neglecting others and it will result into unbalanced unsatisfying mess.
c3c3ca No.15560255
Quite probably but the development is also quite the journey since Shibusawa was only in it for two of the stages(the first where it was derivitive of SW and had a forgotten Akira Kurosawa script and at the end after TN decided to ask for help since they couldn't make heads or tails out of it until Shibu and Koinuma joined the production). Given how they mentioned in interviews what they set out to do they knew full well what they wanted but had to look at DS for the loot and stats system since otherwise we'd end up with some massively over/underpowered shit. Not that there isn't any in the game now but could you imagine if the things that broke the game weren't the broken shaman abilities but rather the wooden stick you find in the first area?

Totally wrong. Empire games lack sufficient strategy that can be almost completely ignored in favour of just running in at the enemy. The lack of a structured map means there is less challenge in overcoming the scenario presented overall. In terms of gameplay its almost entirely a downgrade.
In addition, one big appeal of the games is seeing the characters, their struggles and their interactions. Why Dynasty Warriors 5 and the original Warriors Orochi stand out so significantly is because of the separated stories that you get to explore.
Empires forgoes these mechanics for a poorly implemented total war game where you play as the only unit that matters, except for occasionally one other guy or base, and you can beat all the other units.

The second has better story, but it cuts out the Land of Asura arc. It's gameplay is also closer to a more traditional Musou game
FOTNS Musou 1 has really large maps and a lot of mini game/QTE gameplay on top of typical musou gameplay. The movesets are also not very long or varried as compared to the second, plus I think I remember there were only like 12 playable characters.
I preferred the second one over the first, but I have a friend that preferred the first.

Now that I played DWG2 and Reborn back to back I think 2 is actually better? Better as a Gundam game even.
I mean yeah it's slower and has like 10 times less enemies on screen, but it also actually feels like mech game, where both you and enemies are slow and powerful, each hit matters and you can't just zip around battlefield even in transforming suit.
Now don't get me wrong, I love Reborn too, but feels more like traditional musou, where you play superhuman rather than robot, it feels extremely similar to SW4 where you just ram through hundreds of trash mobs in a flashing whirlwind of death. It's fun and cool, but it doesn't quite feel like I'm a Gundam.
Now somebody tell me how to get Japanese Voices into PS3 version of DWG2.

Starting with 2, Koinuma got everything from Shibusawa because the man had some concepts that couldn't be explored with the hardware(from what he claims at least) and focused on other games, like Crimson Sea 2.

Hokuto Musou 1 / Ken's Rage 1 is regarded as better by some people because it functions like a beat'em up first and foremost with Musou controls and an additional Musou mode where you straight up go to town like a proper Warriors game but it also has better graphics, aesthetics that capture the FotNS feel and the best arc only along with a swank dream mode and a great progression system along jumping. The thing is that it is only 30FPS and with the sequel they removed Koinuma and his team and muddied the graphics to god-awful levels, removed jumping thus removing an entire layer of moves and tactics, removed the Aura moves and relegated them to slightly more boring musous but they got the 60FPS without properly utilising them fully.
In short, KR1 was made with the PS3's limitations in mind and the FotNS aesthetic to an autistic detail while the second game was a rushjob to match with current licensed Warrior titles sensibilities that may or may not have not fully matched it.
Ideally Ken's Rage 2 should have come out on the PS4, include KR1 and expand with the second part, have 60 FPS and be a tad faster, include the dash mechanic but not replace the jumping one, ease up on the QTE finishers and expand on the aerial combat a bit along with a slight improvement on existing movesets and nobody would have been as angry with it as they were on release. It's like what happened with One Piece Warriors 2 except OP had a 3rd game that fixed everything wrong with the 2nd one even if it didn't bring all the good stuff from OPW1.

You'll never get a general consensus because while the general population likes to bitch that every musou is the same game with a different coat of paint, it's really not. Every game has a host of different mechanics, story aspects, character focus, and style that each appeal to different people. Some people love Dynasty Warriors 4 because of the Duel system that allows the play to focus on named enemies while peons create a kind of ring around you to fight. Some people love the renbu system of 6 because it was newlol. Some people hate DW but love Samurai Warriors because of the different character functions (Ninja's can double jump and take different paths, heavy characters can plow through barriers. And, some people hate the SW and DW series, but love the Anime based Musou games (Gundam, One Piece, Fist of the North Star.) You will never find a true consensus. You're best bet is to pick one and try it out, if you don't like it, try again. that's how it works with Musou games.
As for Gundam Breaker, I wouldn't say it would Qualify as a musou, but more like a Gundadm Devil May Cry. Senran Kagura is closer in style and gameplay to a musou, but the difference is that Musou games have larger stages that can take a little over a few minutes to fully get around and Senran Kagura only has a few very large maps, but each map can traversed in less than a minute. Also, Senran Kagura has preset combos, kind of like Tekken or Street Fighter where as Musou is kind of like an open combo system. Both games are great though, I just personally wouldn't classify them as Musou

Depends on the game.
All of the Dynasty Warriors games follow a rough outline of the three kingdoms era/romance of the three kingdoms. Honestly, it all depends on how much you like the characters, but you switch through a lot of them.
That's why I advocate for DW5 on PS2. Each character gets 5~ stages of their own, often overlapping with others, with their own personal epilogue. It really gets you a feel for who each character is.
In the later games, it usually follows the story of a faction rather than a character, and you switch who you are playing a lot, so the feeling of the story is more linear and more whole, but if you don't know the characters it can go either way.
And I'd recommend at least playing one of the Dynasty Warriors before jumping into Warriors Orochi.

For story
PS2 era - Dynasty Warriors 5 and Xtreme Legends
PS3
Dynasty Warriors 7 had the single greatest play out of the Three Kingdoms story. Dynasty Warriors 8 had the second greatest with better character design, removal of clone moveset characters, and an improvement on the multi-weapon system that started in 7.
The difference between the ps2 and ps3/4 games is that once you got into the PS3/4 games the story shifted from focuses on the story of each individual character to the story of the entire Kingdom and the role each character played in that Kingdom's story.
For Samurai Warriors
Overall Spirit of the Sanada had the best story, however, it only covers the story of the Sanada clan. Beyond that Samurai Warriors 4.
Personally, I think Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate had an amazing story

In WO3U, there's a Gauntlet Mode DLC that unlocks a stage where every single enemy is set to the lowest misama level, but they all drop a 150 experience scroll when killed. On the master quest map in the upper right area by the temple, there is a "rack up 1k KOs" mission. It involves 3 shadow Volga to start off, eventually summons two Angorok dragons and The Imprisoned. After you kill them, there is a lull and 4 heroes show up.
The mobs are intense, they shit out EXP like you wouldn't believe, and you can take a level 1 and race to level 50 in a heartbeat. The mission has a time limit, but it also has a high drop rate for Tier 3 weapons, so use this to unlock abilities for your weapons, as well as weapon harvesting. Especially if you enter Spirit mode (consuming the magic gauge) and rack up kills.
For this reason, Young Link is broken as all fuck in these missions and you'll spend 95% of the time as FD just raping the shit out of everyone.
Oh, and Ganondorf's Trident combo where he spins it around himself fucks up soldiers and bosses alike, so use it all the time.

It was easily the worst musou I've ever played. It had some nice gameplay ideas by adding the fuck ton of gadgets to use, and tried to continue doing boss fights properly from Hyrule Warriors, but the boss fights were awful, and more important, there was no tactical feel to the battles. Almost every single map in the entire game was walk from point a to point b while killing enemies. You're supposed to have an army at your back, running around and holding/capturing forts, or supporting troops who's morale is low. Berserk was actually a fucking awful franchise to use for Musou game since it's 99% Guts wandering around alone.
>>15554267
The bodyguards thing was dumb. It was just another few numbers to increase the grind needed, especially by adding in objectives on maps such as "execute suprise attack" and shit like that. I was having fun trying to 100% the game until I had to spend 10 minutes dicking around in the menus to get the appropriate bodyguards.

Bladestorm, the Hundred years' War. I can't tell you how good it is, but probably not very. I tried it for around 30 minutes at a friend's house but it plays massively differently from a normal musou game.
>>15558227
I realized it was going to be shit once I saw the "tactical overview" map of the world map. Every Japanese game that's ever had something like that has always fucked it up way too hard. It's NEVER a challenge because the enemy forces don't move fast enough to actually pressure you any. They miss the point that It's not fun if you literally can't lose the war.

So, should SE currently re-hire Koei and tell them to remake Drakengard 1 but only the musou portions of Caim and have them add the others as playable characters during a free mode of sorts along with giving them new costumes and a new moveset for each and every weapon? Many say Drakengard 1 has this experimental vibe for extra freakiness of the world ending and bullshit but that only applies to the story, characters and OST, the gameplay just takes you out of the experience completely. There's a difference between making a good game that makes you feel something and just making a bad game because you don't know how to do it and Cavia was very inexperienced back then. Bless Chiba for wanting a Dynasty Warriors 2-3 combat system, I loved it when it came out but unlike DW3, it aged horribly. Plus SE reigned Koei very well with the Dragon Quest games so, there's hope?

The thing about Berserk is that it's very difficult to make a proper Musou for it since you have to make it more like the first Samurai Warriors game during the Golden Age to emulate the feel of being able to die from mooks but also the fact that Guts is an unstoppable killing machine in the making with open maps and a proper army with bodyguards at your command. Then after the Golden Age the game should have adopted Ken's Rage 1 type of stages where it's more like a beat'em up in closed spaces and Guts has to rely on tactics instead of button mashing to get the job done.
But those aren't the worst offenders even since Guts' animation are pretty horrible and outright outlandish(the double spin comes to mind with how anime it looks and makes NO FUCKING SENSE) and the voices from the new japanese dub are...questionable at best. I like Iwanaga as an actor due to Kamen Rider and Rescue Fire but only Nobutoshi Canna ever managed to convey Guts' animalistic rage as the berserker he is. Not to mention, the cutscenes were fucking awful and if they didn't have the budget, they should use the manga panels for stylistic merit.
Finally, no sword of Guts had any real weight to it which is ludicrous since a game made for the PS2 perfectly grabbed the idea of how Guts should play in these games. His sword had weight and his sword hand would remain in a certain position after he swung before returning to default, allowing for paused combos even after dodging, not unlike the dodge offset Bayonetta and MGR much, much later introduced, spicing up the combat far more than it had any right. And it got the Berserk Armour feel perfect, right down to the howls.

It's why only the Dragon portions are still good to this day but the Caim portions are mind numbing to anyone beyond hardcore fans of the series. If the pasta was true, then the dragon portions and dragon riding during the Caim sessions should have been as joyless and as lifeless as that of Drakengard 3. Oh wait, I forgot, everybody sees the cockroachers as niggers so it's politically incorrect to make a game where the implication is that you kill chocolates and the outcry would reach Japan even if it never left the shores, with Koei loosing tons of clients for their (now) fujobait series.

You can somewhat blame that on the source material. RotTK makes Cao Cao out to be a villain, and Liu Bei out to be a hero. This is despite the fact that Liu Bei had his adopted son killed, the book tries to justify that, he repeatedly betrays lords that take him in, and on several occasions, acts like a indecisive little cunt. I thought that was something DW added, but no, he has several moments where he refuses to make a decision and one of his generals has to for him. This is in contrast to the other lords, who even if they leave it to a general, at least try to pretend they are on the same page.
And Wei fucked up in several respects. Cao Cao's double dealing got his son killed. Then his arrogance cost him his initial push into the southern parts of China and quite a few soldiers. Cao Pi then opened the way for the cunts of Jin to gain power. I am probably forgetting a lot, but those are the big ones that I can think of.
