Based off of the player numbers, there aren't any meleefags mourning. They all stuck with Melee or PM. They didn't get any ex-Smash 4 players either, those newer players who like the genre but want more movement options and without the bs of Melee picked up Slap or Rivals.
The reason to get sad about its death is that Brawlhalla's numbers still shit on every other game in the genre on PC, despite being the shittiest looking and playing fighter I've ever touched. Icons could've been a contender with its f2p model and decently good mechanics but it didn't even scratch the market.

PM works because it’s basically Melee + Brawl. You have a whopping 40 characters to pick from and all of them are viable except MAYBE Olimar/Kirby/Bowser but you. Those were all just things that would probably would have lead to it being a shit game. The thing that really killed the project was a lead engineer died. The engineer who died was actually a guy who worked on the Pipeworks Godzilla fighters and is the guy responsible for the destruction system in those games.
You can find a post on their forum where they admit this killed the project because he was THE key team member who would make it work and the money from the kickstarter wouldn't be able to keep the programmers they had on-staff long enough for them to reverse engineer his destruction systems. It's a true shame, but I'm working my way up to continuing his work.

PM takes the good from both games and mashes them together.
Melee had good gameplay but a pitiful roster and surface-level poor balance (Brawl also has terrible balance but you can't tell as much just from a casual surface-level glance). Brawl had a great roster and story mode but falls flat in other areas including the gameplay, which PM fixed. And PM does add more goofy stuff so it isn't just tourney autism.
Icons indeed has nothing. It does worse then both Brawl, Melee and PM, and it does worse then even a ton of Smash clones out there. Then there is diversity shilling and blatant copying of some Smashs movelists with horrible characters. I'm glad they crashed and burned.
