So, I've finally decided to download an emulator on my phone and now I need GBA game recommendations. I'm looking for good shit I haven't heard of so hit me with your best shot.

And GBA General I suppose

704c34  No.15548070

Some of my favourites off the top of my head

>Mega Man Battle Network 1-3 (4-6 are inferior)

>Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis

>Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

>Fire Emblem + Fire Emblem Sacred Stones (and Binding Blade if you can be bothered applying a translation patch)

>Mario Kart Super Circuit

>Golden Sun 1 + 2

9f01d1  No.15548086

>>15548070

>Battle Network

Way ahead of you there. Though I disagree as I think 5 and 6 are amazing, with just 4 being trash.

>Tactics Ogre

Will have to look into that.

>FFT

Already got that

>Fire Emblem

Also done, Binding Blade included

>Mario Kart

I personally didn't like Super Circuit when I tried it out, but that was long ago so I might give it another shot.

>Golden Sun

Also already done.

5bcdd9  No.15548089

Castlvania (Aria of Sorrow or Circle of the Moon)

Megaman Zero series

FZero

9f01d1  No.15548097

>>15548089

>Castlevania

I got Aria of Sorrow, but how are the other two?

>Megaman Zero

Got that

>FZero

FUCK I can't believe I forgot this. Which one should I go for?

5bcdd9  No.15548109

>>15548097

I didn't even know there were multiple ones. I played the one at launch, fucking difficult but a solid racer.

COTM was also at launch, and it could be considered a prototype of AOS. Still has rpg elements, but a larger focus on playing well, as opposed to grinding.

8755bc  No.15548112

warioland 4 was amazing, super fun to play

0c762b  No.15548120

>playing with a touchscreen

I wouldn't recommend anything with a focus on heavy real-time, twitch, or reflex-based action

1b0e8a  No.15548122

>Playing on phones

It's shit anon. Tactil controls will fuck any action game you may want to play, so forget about Castlevania or Metroid. You can try shit like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, though.

So here:

>Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

>Pokemon Emerald

>Advance Wars

Basically shit that doesn't require you to press too many buttons at once. You could just get a DS emulator and play Phoenix Wright as well

>>15548097

Don't listen to Circle of the Moon fags. The game is shit. It's hard, but for the wrong reasons. It features restrictive controls in an exploration game. It tried to combine Classicvania with Metroidvania and failed. Harmony of Dissonance is rough around the edges but it's overall a better game with a lot more content.

e2f102  No.15548130

>Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

9f01d1  No.15548135

>>15548120

>>15548122

I have a controller to circumvent the problem of touch screen control if need be.

>Advance Wars

>Pokemon

Baseline. Got that.

>>15548109

Yeah, three of em apparently. One being Japan exclusive tho

>>15548112

>Warioland

Gonna grab that

>>15548130

>Chain of Memories

Hard pass. I enjoy KH, but CoM sucks so hard to me.

e2f102  No.15548157

I've played em both. I kept thinking one version could persuade me, but every time I decide to give either version another chance, I end up realizing I still hate it. It doesn't gel with me no matter how hard I try.

Anyone ever try those cheap bluetooth controllers for android? Seems like a passable way of playing action games on a phone emulator.

9f01d1  No.15548174

>>15548166

I got one that I tried with a platformer, one of those moga controllers and it does the job good enough I find.

1b0e8a  No.15548178

>>15548135

>Controller

Nice. Then as everyone said

>Megaman Zero series

>Castlevania HoD and AoS

>Both Metroids

>Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga

>Warioland 4

>Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland

That's from the top of my head.

>>15548165

Shame. Is not really that bad. I like the GBA version because of the sprite quality, but I do get why it for everyone.

If you are bored at work then read instead you dumb nigger. Playing with a touch screen is horrible and playing with a bluetooth controller gives you 10+ms lag even if you plug it in. If you are dead set on having a bad time full of frustration then try turn based rpg's or better yet buy yourself a psp at a flea market and softmod it to run everything up to psx games.

I don’t know if phone emulators support gyroscopes, but check out Wario Ware Twisted. You might not get the rumble feature either.

debe79  No.15548247

>>15548236

>Also done, though I was looking at Amazing Mirror too. That any good?

Probably. One of the great parts about the Kirby franchise is that the quality only ever dips down to "Pretty solid" and never any lower. Consider it if you run out of game.

>If you are bored at work then read instead you dumb nigger.

I will say that a Kindle loaded with Discworld (Light Fantastic through Thud, no later because the pozz gets absurd after that) will last you probably a good half-year, depending on your reading speed and downtime.

9f01d1  No.15548269

I ask because I never really got into the series. I dipped my toes into it on a couple of occasions, but never really got seriously into it.

debe79  No.15548276

Return to Dreamland is an excellent entry point on the GBA, IIRC, but the series never really asks much of you in terms of playing previous titles. I wouldn't call them super challenging, though.

346d87  No.15548290

Ninja Cop (AKA Ninja Five-O) is a great game, similar to Bionic Commando with the hookshot.

Summon Night: Swordcraft Saga are also great ARPGs with a 2D side-on fightan style battle system. Be warned it's full of ooooold memes from when halfchan was still new and interesting, when references to slowpoke were still topical.

>>15548097

Maximum Velocity was a launch title, and a prequel to the original. It's a good game, but lacks many of the iconic elements of the game.

GP Legend continues with the story of Falcon and one of his fanboys, and has story mode and missions which some people like, some people hate.

There was a third game for the GBA called Climax that is Japan only and it bombed so hard it's been memory-holed and it was this game that effectively killed the series.

9f01d1  No.15548316

>>15548290

I think I've seen summon night's name thrown about a couple times. And how bad are we talking? Is it quality old memes or the shitty stuff?

As for FZero, so basically ignore the japanese one only one, got it.

debe79  No.15548328

>>15548316

>I think I've seen summon night's name thrown about a couple times

Keep in mind you want SwordCraft Story, not the other games. The other games are boilerplate JRPGs, Swordcraft is a game where you build your own weapons and there are duels against other crafters decided by who breaks the other's weapon.

Also, lesbians. Lots and lots of lesbians.

tetris would be a perfect candidate for this, since the GBA never had a really, really good iteration of it.

plus, most people associate tetris with gameboys on some level, and it plays into the ebin russia conspiracy shit.

I was thinking the same shit. I found this really classy looking stock photo but despite it being just a thumbnail, it could work really well if it's blurred out even more after being enlarged.

How about Tetris GO? Developed by some rather foreign developer, too, maybe some Koreans who worked on puzzle games - so it doesn't sound completely bollocks.

Shining Soul 1 & 2 are good choices. SwordCraft Story are some of the best RPGs on the GBA, really

I would recommend Riviera: The Promised Land. GBA copy is pretty good but PSP copy got reworked CGs.

The avatar series of GBA games features decent sprite work and some simple puzzles.

There's Zone of Enders, Fist of Mars which is a decent tie in to the console series. Plays a bit like FE in moving units around a map.

Breath of Fire 1 & 2 are on GBA if you've never played them before, think the SNES has better translations however.

I spent the better part of my highschool days playing the GBA as my computer was a toaster and there was a long roster of games to go through.

The CT special forces games look a bit like metal slug

LOTR Two Towers and Return of the King are diablo clones, good to zone out to if you can stand the pixels.

The various Yu-Gi-Oh games are also on here if you're interested. I'd recommend Duel Academy as it follow the story of GX by allowing you into the school and Ultimate Masters 2006, as this was during GX and has a good selection of cards like expanded cyber dragons and elemental heroes before that whole card games on motocycles.

Zoids Legacy is another good one, you get zoids as a result of battle or buy them, fix em up, put a pilot and weapons on em and you have yourself a front line unit. Can fit six in a party and I'm not famalier with zoids lore but there are multiple characters from different periods that help you out.

Reason 2006 is so good is it has alot of per-packaged decks in the game, bought myself a warriors deck in real life because I got so use to playing with em. Do recommend it.

I'm not too familiar on Demikids, think it's like pokemon in that you collect demons to do battle but I dunno but it's related to megami tensai?

Onimusha Tactics is like Tactics Orge but Onimusha, it's pretty good from memory.

CIMA is another RPG where you get stuck on a train that gets lost in a demension and you have to find your way home.

"In CIMA, you must take a number of NPC characters, each with their own special abilities, out of the dungeons the CIMA have created to feed on human hope. CIMA build their dungeons on this principle: Without an escape, Humans lose hope. Therefore, they take their time to appear not as powerful as they could. "

Right, think I remember that people can die permanently if you let them. I haven't played this in years however.

There's GX Academy and 2006 on GBA, Tag Force on PSP, Spirit Caller and 2007 on DS, Card Almanac which was an information thing, Tag Force 2 PSP, 2008 DS, Tag Force Evo PS2 and Tag Force 3 DS. 5D's got 2009.

I remember played Spirit Caller and 2007, that was when the DS emulator was going strong and I went through the Ace Attorney stuff. Again, reasons why you should grab 06 or 07 is the detailed card packs, being able to buy boosters or starter decks in game opponents who run Kuribohs or warriors and it's just a good simulation to actually playing against people online. Ban list is old but you can turn that off in some cases I think.

Ah, story wise Duel Academy is you enroll as the new kid and battle your way through the cast to become the best duelist at the academy.

You'll probably want to play Spirit Caller though as that follows more closely to the anime and goes through a few arcs with the player taking the place of Judai in duels.

http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Yu-Gi-Oh!_GX_Duel_Academy

http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Yu-Gi-Oh!_GX_Spirit_Caller

2006 doesn't really have a story line but it does have duel challanges like chess puzzles in playing certain cards beat your opponent in a single turn while he has a blue eyes on the fiend for instance.

http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Yu-Gi-Oh!_Ultimate_Masters:_World_Championship_Tournament_2006

2007 is like 2006 except it has 400 more cards.

Glad to help.

Two metroid games, Zero Mission is a remake of the original and Fusion is it's own thing where Samus is infected with a virus.

HP games are kinda decent as they have you walking around the school using spells on the environment then throw you into battle here.

Speaking of Metal Slug, there's Advance on here as well.

Also a Medabots game, never played it but it might be for some people

Sword of Mana I never finished as it glitched out at a certain part but I did like playing it.

Scurge Hive is another gem, like Metroid but a different camera angle?

Azure Dreams isn't a bad game, go into tower, get gold to build up town to go up to top of tower but it did get a remake on the PS that has better artwork.

I like this, you should make the "go" logo look more 80s somehow though - there's websites that make logos like that and some minor editing in GIMP could cover up use of said sites

also, add "NDOORS Corporation" logo under Nexon's - as it's a largely unsuccessful subsidiary.

everyone knows Nexon because of MapleStory. although, they are also known for shady Nintendo-associated development. see: maplestory DS which is an actual game they never fully released that ended development under dubious circumstances

NDOORS - sounds like "indoors" which alludes to "behind doors" as in "behind closed doors"

think like a tinfoiler when crafting shit like that.

the 3D-esque design behind could be used to lead into some deepest lore tier shit too.

"Tetris GO!" was a new take on the classic Tetris formula, taking place on a cube rather than a grid. Added elements of Tempest to Tetris and was widely successful until the games were mysteriously pulled from shelves.

Korean developer Nexon quickly scrubbed all references from their subsidiary NDOORS Corporation's website. A leaked internal document from Nexon revealed massive layoffs at NDOORS due to use of a North Korean dialect in internal company e-mails, the contents of which were not disclosed by Nexon - even internally.

You think Omega Factor is starting off like the 2003 series, Tobio dies, gets made by Tenma as Astro then goes through the arcs of Atlus, Pluto and Blue Knight, except you got people like Pheonix and Black Jack get involved with the plot and it becomes a love letter to Tezuka.

Broken Sword is actually on here, after playing this I played it again with the PC version and continued the series. 2 is a good continuation but 3 was 3D and didn't really work.

DK Country 1 - 3 are all on GBA, pretty damn good ports as well. Probably works better on a SNES emulator but it's there.

Also some DBZ games, play a bit like RPGs.

Eragon, ashamed to say I have played and finished it.

Lunar Legend is an absolute must. It's a remake of Lunar Silver Star and it's a pretty good adeptation. It's different from the original but it's a good version for the GBA. Story is Alex wants to protect Luna, a girl with a magical song and to do so seeks out dragon gear from different colored dragons. Meets people and stuff happens along the way but he does become the hero.

Mazes of fate is a little gem I found. It plays like Legend of Grinrock in moving around a dungeon and the combat but outside you have characters that animate talking to you. Sucks you in.

Medal of Honor Infiltrator is a fun little game if you can handle the controls.

Okay so Megaman battle network games are damn good. Instead of playing like normal Megaman you slot in chips that attack an opponent on the other side of the field, you take it in turns to buff attack and heal, stuff like that. I say start with battle chip challenge then go out into Network battle 3 - 6.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is good, you turn into a pokemon, meet a friend and the society built around there. Then you go out into dungeons trying to find a way back home.

Super Ghouls and Ghosts. Died many times in this but was worth it to finally get that true ending.

There are actually two sims games on GBA, bustin out which has you move into a town and 2 which has you filming weird events around Strangetown. Both lack more customization options for more story, if you want that from sims.

Two Zelda games, Link to the Past which is a GBA version of the original SNES I think and 4 swords which is a multiplayer game.

In fact the buttons on the original GBA aren't the hottest either, with a good Bluetooth controller, a free emulator and collection of ROMs and a cheap phone you can have an objctively better experience than with an original GBA.

- King of Fighters EX 2 (Pretty solid but a little gimped KOF 2000 port. Some sounds are missing and the new OC characters have lack of frames)

- Street Fighter 2 Turbo Revival (graphics are good but the MIDI soundtracks…arrg)

- Lady Sia (a good platformer, kinda)

- GT Advance series (a car sim? on my handheld?)

One of the biggest issues with Sonic Battle is how story-heavy it is. You spend half of the game mashing A to get through whatever stupid premise they force on you. And a lot of the battles don't even earn you cards for Emerl, the robot you can customize through skills learned in gameplay. So a lot of the game feels like filler. And to earn the "best" skills for Emerl is just a grindfest in long run.

Emerl sounds cool on paper until you realize that once you've grinded for Gamma's punch combo there's no incentive to ever touch the customize menu ever again, also there's dumb shit like custom color schemes costing resources that are hard capped way too low. Honestly the entire game is wasted potential.

Because it had to be fan-translated and the sequel we did get is neither well known or high demand (and thus the missing game not benefiting from such)? Not to say either are bad, but I figure those are factors compared to other fan-translated games on the system (Ao no Tengai being an admittedly similar example; aside from it, there's only two entries in English, a fighter that was brought overseas and a SFC side game that had to be fan-translated).

Did the audio issues when emulating Vacation ever get resolved, or is it a "deal with it" since apparently the latest version listed is still a 1.0?

I actually haven't played it yet. I wanted to play it on my Vita but I couldn't get it to run good enough. Vita's GBA emulation is lacking, but from my little bit of experience it seemed like it might be one of those games that pushed the system and would probably run better on the actual hardware. The beginning was really interesting though. I'd definitely give it a try if it looks like something you might like.

I'm certainly not averse to games like it, and I've seen anons speak highly of it, but I'd rather it not be hampered by something before getting into it. Not every fan-translated game sees bugfixes though (and bad/glitchy audio strikes me as a bad one), and some don't work right aside from the emulator the patch creators were testing with.

Unrelated to the GBA, but apparently Song of the Angel just saw its patch released the other day.

Been playing it all week at work, but holy heck is it nice to go back to a controller and play my Vita.

Do not play fast action or games that require combos on a touch screen, your hands are gonna cramp up and the reaction time is just so shitty. Slow/comfy platformers seem to be fine like Kirby or Klonoa.

d22432  No.15615725

>>15615631

I don't know. Probably because the previous gameboys only had two and Nintendo's usually kind of slow to change shit up what should be basics too much, at least until the DS (four buttons, bottom screen, a mic, etc). I mean, shoulder buttons were new to the GBA compared to the prior Game Boy versions, weren't they? Or am I remembering wrong? Hell, it even took them until the SP just to try backlighting again after the Japan only Gameboy Lite, and even then the first SPs were only sidelit.

At least the two face button scheme worked well enough for the NES-to-GBA ports (and obviously GBA original game shaving been designed around it). In comparison more companies out to have held off on the SNES ports until the DS, between GBA having the lower amount of buttons, worse audio, and worse color output than the SNES. I'd hate to have seen Chrono Trigger have been sent to the GBA instead of the DS.

SD Gecko my man. Can use an Action Replay disc to launch GBI which will read your cart. These discs are still being sold and are about half the cost of what the secondary market would charge you for the official one. Plus, GBI is better than the GBA OS anyway.

I have an everdrive in my game boy player and shit is cash. The anon above has put you on the right track but there is something GCN specific. The memory card with an SD card slot that works for the Wii will work for the GCN–you just need the right shit to boot GBI with. This is software called Swiss.

The megaman Battle network series and and the megaman zero games are some of my personal favorites and are widely considered great series. Be warned though, the MM Zero games are hard and not like Dark Souls but like old school games, you need to actual skill and good reflexes to beat them.

32930c  No.15618740

>>15618727

in summary:

Get SD Gecko memory card adapter, usually these work for both Wii and GCN.

Get compatible SD card for it.

Get Action Replay disc.

Put Swiss and GBI on SD card, then put it in the Gecko.

Put the loaded SD Gecko card into your cube and put in the Action Replay disc. Power on.

Assuming you did the googling you will need to to make sure you set it up right, you will see the Action Replay menu, which will then open Swiss by default, from there you can select GBI and open it in one of several modes.

I did this like, two years ago and forgot the specifics, but that is the gist of it and you can do it. I am also slow so it took me like a day to do it once I got all the stuff together.

Need to also consider that while the DS started as "third pillar" its popularity quickly caused Nintendo to phase the GBA out with the DS being shifted into a role as a direct replacement. Had the DS not done as well as it did, the GBA might have been current longer and had longer popularity/more sales. Also proper backlighting/battery charging from the start, which I'd say also worked in the DS' favor in comparison.

That actually puts into perspective why Drill Dozer never was expanded upon or had any sequels and was quickly left behind since it didn't sell well due to the GBA not being the "in" system anymore. It still makes me wonder what could have been had the GBA been given a few more years of shelf-life, but what we got wasn't bad at all considering the GBA's great library of games.
