1 and 2 aren’t the worst things ever, but they definitely aren’t Castlevania and aside from a small nod here or there, definitely don’t feel like it nor will they scratch any related itch. They are closer to God of War with a Transylvania Fantasy setting and a better combat engine. Mirror of Fate has a real nice art direction but plays like a cheap knockoff of the Iga games.

I'm not even asking for much, just the definitive edition plus some quality of life changes like better menus, fixed localization (weapon and enemy names mostly), a item box, NG+ cycles, a level cap option and rebalanced difficulty. And if they really want to put in the work, remake the shitty 3D parts, add more areas to the castle (IMHO the game could have used a final area like the Chaos Realm in Aria and a second form for Dracula) and expand the Richter and Maria parts into their proper adventures.

I changed my mind. My favorite song is the English version of Nocturne from the PSP Symphony of the Night (Dracula X Chronicles). God, I love the lyrics to this so much. Unlike (((mainstream))) songs you hear on the radio, it doesn't have braindead lyrics with choruses that repeat the same fucking lines over and over. Instead, every line is unique and poetic in Nocturne. No one really make patrician lyrics like this anymore. Gaming or otherwise.
>Nocturne lyrics
Here, the goddess of happiness cries and in this time this lullaby
Sings her song of the dream she has, the sadness fills her eyes
End of love, love is gone. No more dreams to dream about, so life is done
If it's so, cut the thread, it's time to let it go
Tears, they flow to the thirst of the gods, the ocean's roars drowned out by rain
Blameless wolf carries on alone, the silence now surrounds him
Sooner than dreaming ends, morning of the dawn will bring another day

That's why I specified "definitive in the west". The Sega Saturn version never made it to the west, so the PSP is the definitive version for the west until some on makes their own overhaul that includes everything and fixes Axe Armor mode

CoD does have puzzles and secret rooms. More so and better designed that LoI I have to add. I do remember some rooms in LoI having different levels of terrain, though, something that CoD doesn't do a lot, I give you that, but other than that, even enemy variety is better. They are both still lacking, but CoD is marginally better than LoI Plus the collectible chairs.

I know about the Saturn's problems; more slowdown, stretched spritework for all the old sprites and longer load times because Konami's lack of experience with the saturn.
Content wise it's still superior, but performance wise it's shit.
>You say that as if it isn't important.
If it is important than the PSP version is superior since you can uncap the framerate on PPSSPP plus get a better polished game + more content.

>Content wise it's still superior
Not really. See, I like the new content. But it's not anything to write home about. The most worthwhile additions are some boots that makes alucard run faster by double tapping, Maria, of course, and that's about it. The two levels add virtually nothing to the game, because the garden leads to nothing other than new gear and a new boss and the prison is just a shortcut. Even the Alucard Spear is disappointing in use.
People doesn't want the new content for it's quality but the fact that it's new content, and that's cool, but you can perfectly play the PS1 version and it's still better even without the extra content, and you can say the same comparing the PS1 version with the PSP.
>since you can uncap the framerate on PPSSPP

But if we ignore the content the psp version emulated is the definitive version because the re-balancing and the minor qol improvements since other than that, the new content and the dub/relocaliztion its the same game.
Each version has it's strengths and weaknesses tailored to whatever the player is looking forward too, this argument is gonna go on forever.
As I see it;
PS1 version is the definitive edition if you are playing on original hardware, prefer cheesy dubs and want the raw game
SAT version is the definitive edition if you want a larger map, more enemies, a few new tools at your disposal, more options for speedrunning and the best Maria
PSP version is the definitive edition if you want JPN audio, more polish, more bosses, a script closer to the japanese version and want the most emulator friendly version
SotN isn't that great that anyways, I don't know why I decided to go on this autistic tirade

Mandatory "it should be 2D" aside, from watching the latest build my qualms are:
- voice work; it's mediocre at best and has no reason to be there beyond short gameplay vocalizations and/or a NPC opening line but they want to lure people with meme casting
- related to the previous, the soul shard gain sequence gets annoying after a while, only the first one should be that ceremonious
- character model quality is all over the place and by all over the place I mean Miriam looks leagues better than everyone else
- heavy weapons need a massive buff or quick weapons need a equivalent nerf because as is, it seems a rapier or knife will get a lot more dps than any heavy weapon
- Miriam is slow as molasses but I'm willing to accept there will be equipment or abilities to circumvent that
- they nerfed Vepar's titties, the model looks better but that downsize is so extreme it reeks of cowering to pressure
- still rubs me the wrong way to see those stupid backer portraits hanging around
Delaying was a good decision, hopefully they'll put that additional time to use and fix a lot of shit. There's potential but they gotta put in the work. I'm more interested in Blasphemous tbh.

And watching it I think my biggest issue is that the 3d looks pretty ugly-mediocre, the effects and menus can look really cheap, and the perspective on the platforming needs some work. For instance, when she was jumping to grab that chest it looked like she should have made it onto the platform. >menus can look really cheap
I'd say that's something that have to do with sound effects. The sound effects in general are either annoying or weak. When you press a menu it should be impactful. For example, SotN had the music stop and loud yet fitting sounds while navigating through it. Doesn't help that the music is also mediocre, though.

For me the red flags of Blasphemous are their own admission they went overboard on the first boss they made which makes me think the next ones won't be as well animated and the fact they keep hiring concept artists for a game that's already in the production phase. I honestly found it amusing that Yamane was able to remix two songs from her first work (King's Valley II not even being a Castlevania game) into the game, and thanks to the pyramid paintings they didn't feel out of place at all. Though, I suppose that's a perk to Portrait of Ruin: the nature of the paintings allowing for settings that Castlevania doesn't usually explore. Too bad the additional portraits are just arranged levels, and glitchy ones in my experiences with the NA release (which unfortunately bring the game down a good bit for me), but at least the music in those stages was different than the previous ones as opposed to reused.
>it's still that animu crap that plagued DoS though slightly better.
It's the facet that while a sequel to Bloodlines, it's not as direct of one as Dawn of Sorrow was to Aria, especially as there's not as much crossover of cast. Still, Ecclesia's art was a big step up from both prior DS Castlevanias. Hirooka needs to be involved with better projects than he or she has been on in the years since 2012.
