I am on my third to 4th year of study with an hour or less a day and even i knew how to translate this. It seems like at the time many either did not know japanese or knew some of it, or just made up the story as much as they could if they could not find it in the Japanese dictionary. I almost can not blame them because SRS apps, online dictionaries and yes MTL stuff. Even then though its funny because you still see this often with Sekai Project and their bad translations with Chrono Clock and they barely even try. I will mention it in a moment.

I notice a lot of time people will often confuse things to be literal meanings than figurative. You can tell once you start getting the language down and once it has more abstract meaning like 私の魂を燃やす(burn my soul) in a more abstract sense than anything else. Because the context gives it away.
As for me i need to say that Sekai Project takes the cake with every single fuck up everything they do is MTL, they admit they do not know how to read japanese, and barely even learn the language or try to parse it together(which explains why they go for Moe games). But the hugest one yet is Chronoclock on Visual Novels. What makes this unique is that it was the Japanese was more with foreign loan word borrowing and it was set in England setting, it also had an 18+ patch(which Sekai took months to finally put out and decided to paywall it). But Sekai in all its wisdom decided to make it sound completely Europoor and try to do forced memes, bad speech patterns, and really try to make it cringy as possible. Of course the Europoors and those that pretend they understand how to translate anything on Fuwanovel said "it does not need retranslation it works perfectly fine!" and that it would be dry if it was re-translated to be less shitty. But its obvious with anyone who has a brain and understands at least some grammar in Japanese and how translation works knows this is bad.
