How do we stop arcade games from being bad anymore?

23e32d  No.15544787

>>15544718

It's our fault, we stopped supporting them.

095f45  No.15544815

>>15544718

There's really nothing that can be done about arcade games anymore. The average consumer does not want to go out of their way to go to an arcade anymore, especially with the number of arcade being reduced significantly since the late 90s and early 2000s. The real catch all arcades had is that they were superior to home console games, but that changed by the mid 90s.

You may think these games are railroad experiences, but you have to understand what companies compete against now for arcades in the west, specifically the United States. Majority of arcade games are called redemption games, basically gambling for tickets. Almost all arcades focus on having tickets pop out of a machine, which gets the kids' attention. So, until arcades provide a better or unique experience consoles can't provide, even local arcades are going to be mostly full of redemption games while the usual games that don't give tickets take a back seat.

Arcade games were great fun, very varied that would be pretty hard to replicate to a console or PC without removing the thing that made them special, like Silent Scope, gun games like Time Crisis, certain racing games and another game where you're a diver and you shoot sharks and shit with an automatic harpoon gun that I can't remember the name of at the moment. Great fun.

And most of them are coop so great fun to play with someone.

And highscores to show off.

The only thing that sucked that a lot of them were designed incredibly hard to soak up as much money from people as possible.

It was really depressing for me as a kid how fast arcade halls disappeared where I lived, they just fucking vanished without a trace.

I live in Norway so that's probably why.

a7941b  No.15545445

>>15544815

All we have to do is force people to live in smaller accommodations, make them cramped and need to get out of their box room homes. Then provide a selection of cheap credit, highly addictive arcade machines.

Basically, make the world Japan. The reason the arcade died is simply because we had the space to isolate ourselves comfortably with home gaming.

095f45  No.15545484

>>15545234

>>15545407

Pretty much, yes. It has been stated many times that arcade games were the very forefront of P2W video games. That's pretty much how you played arcade games, playing to win. Sure, you could become really skilled at a game, but a lot of games are designed to be unfair as a way to drain quarters. Games such as Dragon's Layer or Space Ace are a fantastic example, there's no real strategy to it except memorizing what to do after a mistake, and that costs money. Games such as SMASH TV or Mortal Kombat II, although good games, were designed to be incredibly difficult on the player. SMASH TV is a fast action-oriented game in every respect except for the player character, who is slow. This is a way to make it difficult for the player to keep going except for feeding quarters. In Mortal Kombat had its AI designed to be able to perform certain blocks, blocks unavailable for the player to use.

There's still some experience in an arcade playing at home or on a mobile console that cannot be replicated at an arcade, it's incredibly hard to describe. This is why Barcades are so big right now, although their main revenue source isn't the games themselves. Arcade games have also become more expensive to play do to inflation. A quarter in today's money used to be about $0.75 in the early 80s, which is why arcade chains now cost a dollar instead of $0.25. So far, the only place to really replicate this feeling is finding a barcade full of hipsters, a D&Bs chocked full of shit, or an actual arcade, usually at a beach front in the summer time, that has managed to survive by filling a niche for its community.

>>15545445

Although this is the reason arcades have survived in Japan, forcing every single person into a tiny shoe box is a life I never want to live. I've always wanted to be as far away from the city as possible, because it's becoming more and more like that as time goes on. So hey, maybe if that trend continues of hipsters moving into cities and paying thousands on a shoe box, we may get some arcades in.

All the arcade machines I see being taken down are not actually from any arcades since they virtually don't exist anymore but waiting rooms or a building's owner keeping one or two around with the coin button modified to not take coins anymore. Almost every time the demand for the arcade machine's removal is fucking soccer moms.

Imagine Steel Battalion as an arcade game, with its controller designed into its own cockpit styled cabinet. With VR or something.

I also found out the name of the game I detailed, it was Ocean Hunter. I remember having so much fun with that game, swimming aorund and shooting various fishes and spooky shit from the deep.

I guess my idea of revitalizing arcades is to create more crazy ass games with interesting gadgets to immerse yourself even more into the game. And with VR around it'll be even easier.

c7d972  No.15545604

>>15545234

You can't fit all forms of arcade controllers in a home realistically. I'd much rather pay quarters into a slot than fork over an enormous amount of money to purchase a bulky-ass machine for a racing game I'd play once a week.

The advantage of arcades is becoming increasingly slim but it would still be good to have some.

Mario Kart GP runs on the Dolphin, modified Gamecube/Wii hardware

Mario Kart GP DX, the newer one, runs on standard PC hardware. You can run Mario Kart GP on a modified fork of Dolphin, and you can run Mario Kart GP DX on a PC through teknoparrot

Pokken Tournament Arcade also uses standard PC hardware so if you want to experience it on PC without having to use CEMU you can. Its only in moonrunes though

I wish I could seriously play the arcade Mario Kart, but the only place that has it near me is Dave and Busters, which is overpriced, loud, and has niglet children running around everywhere. Hard to focus.

I've played Mario Kart GP DX at one of my local amusement centers, and it was okay. It is not a driving game like Outrun or a racing game like Daytona USA, it is more like a party game. I'm so mad that the place got rid of most of their arcade machines for stupid shit like indoor bumper cars and whac-a-mole.

There are both Battletech and Gundam cockpit games.

Although you would think VR would augment said cockpit games, it would be better to have passive 3d glasses instead.

>Steel Battalion

They have one like that for a modded version of Mechwarrior 4 called Battletech Firestorm. Not as good of a game probably (I have not played SB, wish I could) but they did do a good job with the controls. I remember owning everyone on the local go-kart track that had them because I had actually played 4 quite a bit. Apparently there are venues called BattleTech centers where you can play this regularly.

>why do we want to save the Arcades to begin with?

Gamers being loners is just a byproduct of consoles. Up to the early 90s. gaming was a swarming mass of boys of all ages, rumoring at arcades.

Bring back arcades and gaming will be reborn.

You won't go even if they bring them back. That is the problem.

>You won't go even if they bring them back. That is the problem.

Kids are the ones who need to go there, not old autists. You too hit a bump and ended up weird, after you were a normal kid for a long while. As long as kids start using arcades from a young age, they won't end up total loners later.

76d2f8  No.15618911

arcades died because we live in cities that are designed for cars and long distance travel not on foot. arcades are still alive in japan because you can easily walk there or take a train.

Kids don't go to arcades because arcades were the only place to get decent video games back in previous decades. Nowadays most kids have devices in their pocket that can do all sorts of crazy fun (to them) shit, and they don't have to go to a physical place to share it, because said same device can share it to the entire world for them. Playing video games and hanging out can now be done on this device.

The only thing the device can't do is the bigger attractions, like the light-gun games and the driving games, and the dance games. And if you've been to an arcade recently that is most of what's available. You might get a few standalone old arcade cabinets in a corner, but those simply aren't the attraction.

d77c71  No.15622703

So kids won't go, and we won't go. There, that's why the arcades won't come back.

Arcades dead because we don't let them be anything else.
