What are some games that blew your expectations in story/music/gameplay. Pic related.

The ost, sprite work, and gameplay for the Adventure Time game shot way over my expectations… sadly the level design, difficulty, and game length just weren’t there. By the time they introduce you to all your abilities the game is already over and you only got to use them once or twice in any interesting ways. Still, loved that ost though.

Nier is such a weird case. It feels like everything EXCEPT the combat is good, but you can get the Phoenix Spear and break that aspect of it so it isn’t a huge deal.

>>15528947

I honestly don't even find the combat to be actively bad. Just overly simplistic past the pseudo bullet hell aspect.

What I can complain about is some of the side quests and the text adventure overstaying it's welcome.

you expect it to be some gimmick game since u need the bongo accessory to play it, but the game controls surprisingly well and the gameplay / combo system is ridiculously fun

The Halo series, unironically

The funny thing is, I got Halo 1+3 purely based off the cover-art and I had very high expectations because of this. Despite my expectations, everything about it was incredible and those games are still some of the best games I've ever played

>go in expecting the cutting room floor MGS2 that it originally was supposed to be before they axed that idea

>get a game where the entire point is to WWF suplex aliens, monsters, androids, G-men and shapeshifters

How come every Pokemon game that deviates from the standard formula ends up being great almost every time? Could it be GameFreak are a bunch of useless cunts that have no idea what are they doing, and this has been the case since fucking Gen 3 at least?

677540  No.15529473

>>15529450

The problem I had with the game was that there was no setup to the intro, and you're this tankyfuck indian named Diaz, which had no resemblance to the title character on the boxart. Even Nintendo Power's articles looked exciting, and they didn't match up. I was so confused because my friend didn't have the instruction manual of course.

Anyways, I kept playing it and it made a bit more sense. I never beat it, only as far as the last chapter where everything was on fire. I got to the second-last(?) boss and couldn't quite get to the end. I ended up doing a kick build

I think Spike Chunsoft made PMD they also made gates to infinity after explorers of time but lets forget about that tragedy . But I will admit that gamefreak has become gameshit past pokemon black. Everything past that has been absolute garbage.

I expected it to be a mediocre linear fps trying to imitate STALKER, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a decent story in it.

It probably helped that the writer of the book it's based on was very involved in its development.

i thought it was pretty straightforward and only got complicated when you were trying for a specific build or were trying to use one of the secret combos. otherwise it was pretty okay at showing instead of telling you how to play. some of the overworld sections were shit, and body builds were definitely ez mode, but goddamn i loved that game from front to back

My only regret was not playing this game sooner. It's probably one of the few games with a retro influence that did it correctly.

>>15528700

You should play Explorers of Sky if you haven't already. It's basically the enhanced 3rd version of Time/Darkness.

24de87  No.15529552

>>15529466

It's probably due to the fact that we've already played the same game over and over again, and there's little to improve upon

>enhanced

Doesn't it add almost nothing except a few pokemon exclusive to each version, and another zero isle(?)

>How come every Pokemon game that deviates from the standard formula ends up being great almost every time?

A bit of an overstatement. There's been plenty of trash spin-offs.

As far as why the good spin-offs work, it's because they're willing to take the basic Pokemon mechanics and expand upon it. PMD allows us to use moves closer to what you'd expect in a real world setting or the anime. (beam moves hitting targets far away, earthquake hitting everything in the room around you, teleport actually moving you around the map, etc) This doesn't make it better or worse, but it's fun in its own way and lets you use different playstyles than the usual turn-based mechanics in 1v1 battles (with occasional battle variances in later games) that have no overworld effects aside from HMs and a couple TMs.

>Could it be GameFreak are a bunch of useless cunts that have no idea what are they doing?

They never knew what they were doing. They've just been lucky. (They have some idea from a business point. Backward compatibility to keep dedicated fans and following a formula to not ward off too many people from drastic changes has worked so far.)

I'll just summarize a couple differences that aren't the typical new starters, items, dungeons, etc.

>Spinda's Café

Didn't know Time/Darkness didn't have this. One nice feature is the recycle shop to trade in crap dungeon items for hopefully better items.

>When the player recruits a Pokémon, and the team is full, it allows the player to choose who he or she would like to send back to the guild, instead of immediately sending the new recruit back. Likewise, the same goes if the player tries to do an escort mission and the team is full.

This basically lets you send your new recruit back to the guild so they're guaranteed to be recruited. No chance of them fainting in the dungeon and possibly losing them.

>side episodes

Basically additional short storylines about some of the minor characters you can play through. Not essential to the main story, but it's cool if you like the story and want more character development.

its kind of crazy how well the "rules" of pokemon could be integrated into a roguelike. talk about a match made in heaven.

a39888  No.15529821

>>15529814

My main frustration with Age of Mythology is the lack of re-usable powers. I have these cool powers, let me use them! Though I get they're not balanced for that.

7ced91  No.15529863

>>15529821

at the same time the game could have been balanced around them being more commonplace. it would probably have ended up being a totally different experience though.

it bugged me at first too, every other strategy game i had played up to that point that had spells let you use them as long as you had the mana. i came to like the creatures more than the powers in the end.

soon enough cnc generals rolled around and scratched that "support power" itch.
