Roboforge is the most underrated game of all time, in my opinion.
>build your own robot
>give it weapons, shields, etc
>even animate your own attacks
>put it against other people's robots on online tournaments and ranked matches
The best part was that you didn't control your robot, == you had to program its AI. == That was the coolest shit for me as a kid. It's now free and open source. Kinda shit to run on modern OS's, tho.

This game is way more serious than HOMM. The missions were on majority very difficult.
That seriousness is very stress inducing, something more common on Total War series.
Unfortunately the easygoing HOMM, followed by Age of Wonders buried that series. A well made Disciples III should have turned the table but we all know that shitty sequel.

AoE's my favourite also, I don't know what it is but I don't enjoy AoE 2. Rise of Nations even with it's shitty combat is still my favorite RTS. I wish I could make a better sequel.
