Depends on what you want to play. If you want to play modern AAA games, then you'll have to look into GPU passthrough and if you can't do that you're shit out of luck. If you want to emulate games from the 6th generation and before or want to play games from the mid-2000s and before, then emulators for the various consoles and WINE work very well in that user-case.

The guy who was hired by Valve to work on the DXVK Wine translation layer wrote on a comment on that video Linus made about how he was using the wrong Nvidia driver. They deleted his comment.
One thing I can't fault Linus for is pointing out that the biggest issue for getting games running on Linux is almost always related to DRM and anticheat. Even when taking the virtualization approach with GPU passthrough you'll run into issues thanks to it but they can be worked around.
Also by using virtualization you already had practically 100% compatibility for years already. Using Steam in combination with Wine is a simpler way to do it but it's a technically inferior method both in performance and compatibility.

Is any of you guys running Linux Mint 19?
