Tough choice between saving FPS and saving adventure. Not that either of these were bad games, but that they were greatly dumbed down knockoffs of better games, and their wild popularity among the wrong kinds of gamers pandering to the wrong desires permanently ruined their genres.

Good choice, but even UO was only accidentally designed with player-run freeform world in mind, and immediately attempted to curtail PvP and environmental impact, rather than redesigning the game around them. Not to mention that while WoW was certainly a tipping point, it only continued (both indirectly and through directly shared talent) trends that were already in ascendance through EverQuest and Lineage.

Every attempt to recapture the magic early players found in UO (ShadowBane, Asheron's Call, Black Desert) has succumbed to the same problems of not actually being dynamic enough, and the core combat/crafting mechanics completely falling apart when the players get their hands on them. Probably the closest thing I can think of to success were NWN persistent worlds like 3 Towns, due in substantial part to their small size and the purity of vision possible with so few designers:

Fug, I was alive to see the declines happen though, being primarily an Apple ][/Mac gamer, I had a better view of adventure than FPS. In the case of FPS, the genre was set back at least a decade, both on a technological basis (rooms over rooms, realtime lighting, look up/down, jump/crouch, sloping floors/ceilings, rotating level geometry, vehicles, etc.) and a mechanical one (object interaction, inventory management, stealth, dialog with characters, hostile/neutral/friendly AI, nonlinear campaigns, etc.), if not for iD being lazy, we could've had Deus Ex and ARMA in the early 90s. In the case of adventure, Cyan simultaneously killed the genre through oversaturation of low-effort FMV CD-ROM games, and hopelessly pigeonholed themselves with the Myst series.

I'll repost what I said in a similar thread some years ago, and say Warcraft. The original one. Without Warcraft,

This is for the most part true. It's extremely difficult to actually erase a shitty game or any shitty thing in general from the timeline. The circumstances have to align in a very particular way to truly erase a terrible event. Game companies have a financial incentive to get your money no matter which timeline it is, and whatever other shitty thing you want to go back in time and prevent most likely had people who would benefit from it unless it was a complete accident or something uncontrollable by humans like a natural disaster, so even if it gets changed somebody else would most likely do something very similar. Of course, if a way to go back in time was found to exist, I'd use it to change a hell of a lot more than just videogames. But if I'm going to be given a free attempt at fixing some of the cancer in vidya alongside everything else, it would have to be one of the "gateway" games that seems to admit hordes of normalfags into the community, even if on their own merits they're actually good games. Eliminating one of the big gateway games can stop SJWs from subverting large portions of the videogame community because the SJWs draw their power from normalfags' tendency to virtue signal. So as shitty as it would be to keep CoD, dudebro gamers tend not to pay attention to SJWism despite the fact that they often have very low intelligence, even though they fall for whatever shitty business practices the game companies can cook up. Which games fit the criterion of being a gateway for SJWs is debatable, as is whether an alternative similar enough to serve as a gateway would arise if it were to be written out of the timeline.
