In order to understand that you first have to understand what youkais really are. Essentially they humans fear of the unknown, and an embodiment of folkslore monsters. Why do they have these bodies? Because ZUN wanted it that way, that's why. But that's besides the point. You see, youkai dont really feed on meat, they feed on the fear of humans. They are extremly resilient against all kinds of physical attacks and will regenerate really quickly even if you smash them into pieces. But if they would be forgotten by humans they would fade out of existence.They are born through human emotions and need them to continue existing.

there would be zero fear to sustain her and she would have disappeared quickly if she was following those rules.
There's actually quite a few youkai that don't seem to even try interacting with humans at all, despite their apparent dependency.
Considering their human like appearances came as a gradual thing, it might be possible that a few species are more physical than their predecessors and lack the fear dependency;

IN is a good choice, DDC not so much. Starting with the first windows game and working your way up is ideal so you can actually learn how to use the gimmicks when they are introduced rather than having issues with the core mechanics. I hate that I have no idea where the hitboxes are. A lot of my deaths are bad inputs or cornering myself, which is my own fault, but a lot of them are also just a result of having no way to be sure what will hit me. So many times, I have accurately predicted the path of a bullet, figured out where I thought I needed to be, moved there in time, and died anyway because I don't know exactly where the hitbox is.
I hate that effects can obscure the bullets you're trying to dodge. In one of my attempts against Rumia all the bullets on screen changed for some reason and started getting attracted to me (I assume giving me points, though I wasn't taking my eyes of the screen to check). Trouble is, the next wave of bullets was mixed in with them and I had no way to see how to avoid them.
I hate not knowing whether a collision with an enemy will kill me or it. After getting a power-up or two, most collisions will kill them, but sometimes they get through and I don't know why. There have been multiple times I parked myself in front of a train of enemies, and after the first five all died the sixth killed me instead.
I think I may have been right; this genre might not be for me. It took me two full hours of playing just to get past the first stage.

Not all of what I've done has just been directly trying to do as well as possible every run. I've also spent some runs experimenting. I had noticed through an accidental collision that after getting a couple power-ups it could kill enemies instead of me, and I wanted to try and see when it did that. But I'm still not sure exactly what decides it. I don't mean I'm treating it as an important means of attack, but it's something that might be useful in a pinch and it's annoying to not be able to trust it either way.

As others have said there's a patch to make the hitbox visible in EoSD, and later games show the hitbox when you're focused. Once you play it enough times you get a good hang on how to graze and squeeze through tight spots. First time I tried picking up the game I was having to continue on the second stage and couldn't beat the third stage for the life of me. And every stage after I hit a hard wall where I couldn't for the life of me overcome, but with persistence you'll see your skill gradually improve. But once you 1cc the game, even on normal, the feeling of triumph is fantastic. I'm still trying to catch up to my "peak" skill 1-2 years ago and having plenty of fun. Just managed to beat Remilia with one continue and quickly shaving off my rust after lack of practice and playing. Hopefully I'll be able to 1cc the game in about a week or so.
Personally I haven't felt the need to use the hitbox patch.

So after taking some advice from /a/ I took another shot.
Made it to Daiyousei on my first renewed attempt, but got caught off guard by her third attack. The second run I got there again, realized how easy to evade it was, and reached Cirno without a continue.
The most useful tip I got was to not pay attention to anything but myself and gaps between the bullets, and the power-up boxes until I reached max. I thought I always already doing that, but once I started making a concerted effort I realized I was letting myself worry about the rest of the screen too much. When I kept that advice in mind I breezed through the first stage.

Haha, i learnt to rely on focus once i lost to Meling when i started playing.
Doing so allowed me to get to patchouli without continues(i think i managed to get the Remilia after continuing a few times)
Focus is really good, you should rely on it a lot;
being out of focus is only really good to collect power and such most of the time, very few patterns actually do anything to force you out of focus and precision is key most of the time/
It doesn't change anything if you're an inch away from a bullet or a mile away it achieves the same thing(outside of grazing obviously).
Generally i'd say its probably a good idea for your default state to be focus until you get really good.

I always get destroyed by the books that fill the screen with green bullets, the lines of star things in the second half, and most of Patchouli's attacks.
I've gotten as far as the Sakuya midstage fight before losing my last life to an exceptionally retarded mis-press, and the first half of stage 5 including her felt way easier than stage 4.

Most stages and bosses come down to memorizing whatever gimmick they work off and working around it. The most common one, and this includes stage 4, is to remember where the aimed or homing bullets will be coming from to either kill whoever shoots them as soon as possible or move as little as possible so that they all go in the same direction and can be easily dodged.
