One thing you should know about the Quake guide, I fucked up with the r_wateralpha command, if you are using it set it to 1, not to 0, it may fuck up some older maps.

Im actually re-editing it to fix that among other things, the current one will get unlisted once Im done with the new version.

If you have any maps or mods you would like to see featured Im all ears, they may not make the final cut since I want to keep things short, but any suggestions are welcome regardless.

Eh, most of them are graphics based, though. The closest thing I know of to a good guide and mod showcase is Morrowind Modding History, but it less showcases good mods and more just kinda interesting ones, and there's so many of those it's hard to call them a good introduction.

The morrowind modding showcase guy does a lot of good work, but you are right there is so much stuff it gets overwhelming and the way he speaks takes some getting used to, I would like to see a more curated selection, there is a lot of good stuff to dig up.

It would require some thought on how to approach a Morrowind guide without voice narration easing things a little, I don't have access to a mic and my accent is pretty stiff, so I would need to up my game.

Here's a kuso/franken mod I've been working on for a week or so. The base is Xaser's Parkour, but I've added and modified so much shit. The zombies are now all marines, and you're fighting against the UAC rather than against hell. I haven't replaced all of the demons yet, but I think I might set them as hostile towards the marines.

For those also interested in my question, I went ahead and found out the following steps to start modding quake:

Follow video related tutorial if you want to make maps also.

Create a folder with your mod name in your quake folder, in this case I'll call it "mymod".

Then download quake-c (https://sourceforge.net/projects/quake-c/) and extract it into mymod, so the source files would be located in /mymod/quake-c/ .

Now you need a compiler for it, download FTEQCC (every file in https://sourceforge.net/projects/fteqw/files/FTEQCC/ , I guess, maybe you just need the .exe)

Run fteqccgui64.exe or fteqccgui.exe, open progs.scr located in mymod/quake-c.

Compile it, it shouldn't have any compilation errors.

Now, in your mymod folder, there should be two new files, progs.dat and progs.lno.

Now run Quake, open up the console and type "game mymod".

If you wish to alter bindings and shit, you'll need to create autoexec.cfg in /id1 and write your custom shit in it.

If you want to be able to compile your maps and run your mod automatically after compiling them, add "-game mymod" as a command line parameter in your map compiling program.

Anything gameplay related you'll have to modify in quake-c. Anything graphical or engine related, you'll need to mess with your sourceport. At least that's what I think it's true, if not, please tell me I'm fucking wrong.

OK so far I've sorted links to a fair few of the gameplay mods. I'd recommend adding Dio Doom and Doom Tournament to the archive, and it'd be remiss not to have Moon Man Doom since it's from here. Also a section for universal helper mods that belong in autoload, specifically Target Spy (adds HUD info for monsters similar to what Lithium has), DamNums (makes damage numbers fly out of damaged things), Episodic-EX (strings Doom and Heretic episodes together which is nice for mods that have progress systems), Demon Counterstrike (periodically spawns random items and monsters into the level to keep things going), and Autoautosave (a more flexible autosave system than "start of level").

I intend to indicate what games a mod works with, but would a short description be worth doing as well? Probably too much work when they can just chase links about them.

As far as the others, I disagree with the autosave and episodic ex ones, since episodic .wads kind of expect you to start from nothing. Damnums is debatable, but I guess I can add it, as well as the rest.

Then again, all .wads are optional, so maybe I'll just add all of them. Whatever. Though I'd rather only stick to the more notable mods.

Episodic-EX is designed for mods like Heretical Doom where a single episode might be too little for all the upgrades to show up. Autoloading it doesn't hurt anyway since you can just start a new game after if that's your want. Demon Counterstrike is really great for keeping you on your toes, seriously try it but only for Doom 2 and Doom (you must toggle an option by hand annoyingly). Autoautosave, TS and DamNums might be considered cheaty, feel free to skip those if you want.

Coming up with short descriptions is tough, and they're pretty dry too in my opinion. Lettering is just for my reference as mod type, and what games it works in. Also are there any mods with nice rifles in them? They're surprisingly uncommon.

Been playing about 6 maps, and to me, it's pretty much good TC. While some levels tend to look bleak, some of it is offset with some tense levels, like the subway part did get me on edge. For the gameplay itself, you tend to cycle between weapons since ammo tends to be scarce sometimes, and there are some good shootouts, as well room for both to you and enemies to move around although you can still do chokepoints here and there. If there's some shitty comparison to be made, it's more of Metro or Rage in Doom.

Here's an update. Things have gotten rather crazy now: the imp-replacement enemies (corporals) have been given a special alternate attack based on their colour. Reds use flamethrowers. Grays have a short burst fire of plasma. Tan-oranges fire rapidly. The zombieman replacement also has an alternate attack, a basic flamethrower.

Further, the shotgun has received a major overhaul: one has to chamber a shell by pumping it (alt-fire) before he can shoot. Reloading the shotgun will also activate the pump. A shotgun shell contains 56 pellets, able to kill a cacodemon in two shots.

The shotgun's attack can be altered by picking up one of three alternate shellboxes. Dragon's Breath turns 6 pellets into fireball projectiles. Cyber Slugs fires an explosive, spiraling plasma ball effective against one opponent. Boom Rounds fires a small and fast missile, but one must defeat a Paladin to acquire it. The special shells persist throughout the game until you die (without autosaves), and each respective special shell cancels out the last. Special shells only affect the shotgun: the super shotguns are unaffected.

Aside from this, other changes and additions were made. The chainsaw is now part of the starting arsenal, and does double the damage it did before. Green Armour has been replaced with Power Armour, and Blue Armour with Elite Power Armour. Armour now protects 100% of incoming damage, and armour numbers have been increased.

I played it up to the second settlement and I've been liking it a lot so far, mainly for the interesting environments and level design. The tunnels gave me a heavy Stalker vibe, with all the scavenging for junk, spookies in the mutant part of the tunnels and the eerie bit with arrows incoherently drawn on walls as if someone else than the old scavenger left them to lure you

I'd recommend it although the amount of effort that must've went into these maps makes me feel tired by proxy and I feel I need a rest.

H-Doom looks bland and i find "monster"-girls distasteful personally. Obviously, i (and basically everyone) would suggest reverting back monsters and give them female bits where possible (except zombies. Replace them with other monster). Can't say on how to improve gameplay and design, however. Porn factor should be done last IMO, and animations separating player being sub or dom depending on situation, preferably by not getting player's HP decreased to receive the endless demdom lewd. Maybe make some attacks causing player to fall and demons doing the rest, same for vice-versa.

You are fucking kidding right? It's the Windows of source ports having to juggle lots and lots of older modding standards that are used by tons of mods, many badly coded. It's amazing the thing works at all. However you're moving the goalposts. Incompetent coding is a separate issue from malicious coding. I do not believe for a second that they're interested in using the data collection for evil purposes. They provide a sensible explanation for what and why, make it opt-in, don't even include the code if they aren't interested, and more importantly, evil is very rare in open source projects because you can't easily hide it in an open codebase, and forks can develop if someone tries. If that's not enough then how the hell do you trust anything?

Well, if you need more direct action, there's Descent 3. Its not as good, but its something if you need it. There's also the Freespace games which, while not the exact same, is by Volition, half the team that made these. There's also three 'spiritual successors' that are coming around so look out for those I guess.

The code for all of that was godawful, and actually using the software renderer already wasn't workable for some mods, so good riddance. Some thing I'm messing around with. Based on Xaser's EriGuns 1 & 2, but you can sprint like in ProjectMSX and you can quickly slash with a sword like the PMSX melee attack where you smash enemies with the weapon.

The powerups are changed; you can turn them on & off like Duke powerups. You only have one health item but all the health items you pick up contribute different amounts to this one health pool. When you use it, you recover all health, or up to the amount of charge in the item.

Also the stamina upgrades you get in vanilla have expanded importance; they improve your ability to control the muzzle kick of weapons and also increase the time you can sprint.

Possibly from Graf, I don't know how he leans (seems moderate from one of the thread posts though, and 100% agreed about censoring of classic lit). Rachael leans left but is responsible for keeping forum drama down, which means keeping politics to a minimum.

I expect that master plan to be either delayed because of the older userbase not disappearing as quickly as he's expecting, or for it to go wrong somehow and in that case you can hope for a fork to happen. I'm not in agreeance with pushing for graphically-heavy features in a Doom source port when there's better engine options for heavy graphics.

The saddest thing about this game is that the DM servers either don't exist or only exist about 500 milliseconds away and are completely unplayable.

I have an enterprise-grade server lying around, more than happy to put Debian on it if I can't get the password to the Windows Server OS. I live in Florida with a good ISP speed and would like to start a stable and dedicated server for y'all.

What would you guys suggest I start with?

It's news to me that the newer GZDoom versions have spyware, just looked up a bit on it. Interesting. If I can disable the telemetry I'll do that with the latest version but if anyone knows which version is latest and don't have the telemetry shit I'd love to use that instead.

Hello Doom thread, since downloading everything from the Doom archive I have been having fun playing Doom.

Episode 4 is well known for its retarded difficulty curve. First level is hard and unforgiving with the tough enemies and limited resources (especially health). Second throws you into a pretty nasty situation and remains tough throughout. Secret level is non-threatening if you take it, but the actual third level (hint hint) has some rough spots too. Most other maps aren't so threatening except 6. It's still my favourite episode in terms of map design.

Also are you at least playing Chocolate Doom for this? It'll be harder still without luxuries like mouse look and jumping, and also intended experience gameplay-wise. If you're using mods, put those down right the fuck now.

I'm using Chocolate with some configuration changes for horizontal mouselook and WASD, the game became too difficult after Episode 2 with just keyboard controls and I can't imagine playing Episode 4 with them. I forgot to mention it but I'm on HMP difficulty.
