Best way to play is the OG Xbox version. It's the less buggy and with less unstable framerate (it's still bad but not as bad as others).

PC version runs like shit and buggy af on modern hardware, even with the community patches / fixes. It's apparently one of these games where timing on a lot of things is tied to the framerate.

GC and PS2 versions also don't emulate well.

Damn shame, because it's one of the best and more fun GTA clones out there. The frisk mechanic is one of the best things in the game, and it's too bad Rockstar didn't learn anything from the random patrol missions which are much, much better, more varied and entertaining than GTA's vigilante mode.

Also, just doing random rampages shooting everyone in sight and wrecking shit up was very satisfying in this game. The pedestrian reactions were fun as hell (they got in panic mode just by seeing you walking around carrying an assault rifle, bazooka or minigun), and the minigun could dismember people.

Both Street of La and New York City run just fine and in widescreen with a patch.

The only issue you might have is forced mouse acceleration and the 30 FPS cap on all versions of New York City.

New York City is also notably buggy on all versions because the game was a rushed out the door by Kiketivision and it shows.

Dolphin emulation works fine outside the tutorial area which can constantly crash making it unplayable, but is fixed and perfectly stable if you set the clockrate to 70-80%

From what I understand and from experiences with friends that owned it it was babies first GTA and was at bargain bin prices.

That's why most people reemember it fondly.

I really don't feel like it's a great game, Streets of La is a much better and it's merely an ok as well, it's like a mix of Yakuza and GTA, enjoyable stuff.

New York City really fucking captures the asthetics of the city though.

I really want another game in the same style where you can just drive around, stop crimes, climb the ranks, get nicer police cars/equipement, etc.

Even if there wasn't a lot of variety in the random crimes that would pop up around the city it was still enjoying to me. I'd kill for something like that but a bit more elaborate today. So far it seems the only cop games that are being worked on are boring cop simulators where 70% of the gameplay is handing out fines.

You mean thirteenAG's fix? Game still ran terribly for me after this fix and another one I don't remember. I even tried putting dgVoodoo2 on top of it and didn't help much.

I wish that was true. I've played the Xbox version back in the 2000s but sadly don't have my modded Xbox with me anymore since 2009. Selling it is my biggest gaming regret ever.

Strange, I finished it and don't remember running into this issue. Only problem I've run into is that the game would actually freeze my Xbox sometimes requiring a hard reset, but afaik all versions of the game are glitchy and broken af.

It was trash compared to Streets of LA and I only recall its existence when equally trash OPs bring it up.

Best part of this game is going on a rampage that destroys multiple cars, dying, then casually ending up respawning back at the station and getting underwhelmingly reprimanded instead of praised while indignantly yelling "get the fuck out of the way" because you're supposed to just be a bad cop.

Is there in-depth information about the development of these? Aside from the first one being slightly rushed, and the sequel being half-finished.

Absolute shit, shoddy GTA knock off barfed out with barely anything worth seeing or doing.

It's dogshit, lacks the charm of streets of LA while having a fuckton of bugs and crashes, play sleeping dogs instead, it's true crime hong kong, or was before squeenix bought the game, nick kang was even supposed to make a full cameo but it got reduced to a single conversation ingame (in one the first missions your pals tell you that they're being a dick to you because recently a guy from LA infiltrated the gang and he ended up being a cop, so they got rid of him).

Loved it.
