Ok, I'm huge PSO2 fan, and only Phantasy Star games I played before that were PS3 and PS4.
Now I constantly got people saying how PSO1 is so much fucking better than 2 it's not even funny.
Now that I gave it a try I can't honestly understand how.
I'm not going to talk about graphics, or ass-backward way of forming a party and exploring areas, I understand it's an ancient fucking game, PSO2 also looks and feels pretty dated nowadays.
But let's talk about what the game is
>story
I didn't get far into the story, but everyone says how it's dark, edgy, serious low sci-fi with no shitty anime tropes and is more of a successor to PS2, the one I didn't play either, but I remember PS3 being ultra serious with anime only being present in the art style, while PS4 went full on with humour, tropes and cliches.
I won't argue with that, why would I doubt words or so many different people.
And story in PSO2 is indeed bogstandard anime nonsense, with waifu pandering, shitty jokes, sqeaking sounds and naked boobs.
The only cool thing about it was the twist that the final villain is you and Proufound Darkness is MC went completely (butt)mad over the loss of his waifu. And even that was already made by Capcom in BOF4.
>art style
Now this is where it gets weird. While PSO2 is generic anime, PSO1 has this weird tron-esque ugly art style that hangs between anime and non anime where everyone is wearing spandex. Even Casts, who are supposedly mechanical, wear spandex.
Or robes. Or spandex under robes. And weird ass hats.
I dig star wars looking lightsabers, but costumes and faces in art style are fucking bizarre. Thankfully in-game models have regular anime faces.
This has nothing to do with graphics mind, it's just fucking weird. It doesn't look good or appealing at all.
>music
It's literally the same as PSO2? Or rather PSO2 just got old music and slightly updated and remixed them. Title theme is the same, forest theme is the same, even loading screen sounds are the same.
>gameplay
Oh boy, easily the most important part, and easily the worst.
I retroactively tried to play PSU and portable games, and even DS one plays much MUCH better than PSO1.
You move incredibly slow. Your attacks have terrible animations, and you only have like 3-4 animations to boot.
No dodgerolls, no blocking, no nothing. Yeah I get it, it's an MMO and a really old one at that.
Fuck now I'm looking it up and it's even older than Ragnarok Online!
So it might be ok for its time, but no way in hell it can be considered playable by today's standards.
And then there's obligatory horrible camera, as per standard for 3D games of that era, where you die because you can't see boss you just killed dropping on your ass.
PSO2 does that gimmick too, but at least you can see shit.
Now what did I miss? Probably the online component, but I've been playing mmos since lineage 2 and the whole sentiment about how community changed is wrong. It's the same as it always was, it's just bigger, so you have to spend more time to find good players, but they are here and are exactly the same.
Which brings us to the question in subject field. What does it have over PSO2? Or even PSU? You surely don't play online grinding games for story do you?
Why play PSO1 today?
