And her fanbase may not be the largest around (it used to be larger in Japan) but it certainly is one of the most creative. Fans are constantly creating remixes, 3D models, fanart, fan animations and other things along those lines even today. Sakurai has also said he considers the game to be a masterpiece. Now is her time.

Majora aged like a fine wine in terms of reception. People only warmed up to it with time, after it being mostly liked at launch too. Contrast, it's been all downhill for Twilight Princess, from being the most exciting reveal in Nintendo's history, to a significant chunk of people just regarding it as "just a retread of OoT". Hell, even Wind Waker had people warm up to it over time, but I haven't heard of anyone warming up to TP.

Might also be an era thing. OoT and MM both fall under the N64 era, and since Young Link and Ganondorf are both in, Skull Kid would be the only real logical representative from those games. As for the Wii games, TP and SS, I wouldn't be surprised if you'd find a real chunk of people wanting Groose or Ghirahim. That's less likely, though.

Also, Chief's moves and locales translate better to Smash, since Doomguy's game has a lot of non-PG weapons and locales. The demons and hellscapes he visits are by themselves a problem due to their heavy judeo-christian influences, and most of Doomguy's weapons are either ballistics or violent things like chainsaws, both of which Sakurai would frown upon. In contrast Chief has a lot of cool weapons that can also be treated PG.

If you are asking as somebody who doesn't play fighting games, it's one of the more approachable ones for sure, but fundamentally it's still designed as a competitive fighting game and as such doesn't have much in the way of single player content or modes: it expects you to get your replay value out of gitting gud and playing against other people, and you really do need to have the mindset of wanting to improve and practice and interact with the community if you want to get your money's worth. Basically, you'll get out of the game what you put in. If you are just wanting something to play once every few weeks and that's it then it's not worth it.

If you are asking about how active it is/if it's worth first getting into now, then it's hard to say. It's certainly still active, both in terms of competitive events and being at FGC majors, as well as the online matchmaking, but it's also at a turning point: The paid online for switch is becoming a thing starting this evening, Smash is coming out, and 2019 will be the third year after it';s original console release. I don't expect the paid online to cause too much of a hit to the online population at the mid and upper ranks, but there might be much less low rank players, so getting into the game might be harder. Smash could either hurt or help the scene: More events will stock switches and there could be more people checking out pokken who gota switch for smash, but smash could also suck up the resources we have. And if The Pokemon Company chooses to not have Pokken at worlds as part of the official champsionship series next year that'll be a huge blow, but if they do keep it and smash helps the scene then I only see Pokken growing.

If you have a switch already though, then yes I'd say pick it up, join the main community discord where everything happens (discord.gg/pokken, I know >discord but this is litterally where the entire english speaking community is at for the game, top players, TO's, content creators, theyre'll all here)/
