I found the game to be challenging enough to be enjoyable. But not enough to be addicting like the 3DS or PSP titles. If you have 3 friends and even minimal coordination, you'll never lose. Solo is a much more viable path if you want to do all the content.

It all adds up to being this mixed bag of the game feeling and looking great, but missing the same magic.

I think it's the nature of water that causes all attacks to slow down. Though I think some attacks need to be changed to be compensated for the slowness. Last thread I talked about insect glaive having a move to replace pole vault that kicks you away from the monster or wall.

It should also go without saying that vaulting mechanics work underwater as they do on land. The difference is that you can cling onto any non-slippery or non-sandy surface like roots or a rock-face and kick off of it.

I'm guessing you haven't played X or XX. They brought him back, but changed him completely, so now he has a bunch of AoEs and blasts around more thunder than Zinogre or Kirin could ever hope to manage. They also jacked up his HP an absurd amount, for no clear reason. Lagiacrus in X/XX is awful, it feels nothing like he did in 3rd gen. They really should have had Ivory Lagiacrus instead, just swap his textures with a regular Lagi's textures and it'd have been fine.

Not really. The evasion ones made evade skills useless and were generally the best, and a few weapons got OP ones like Chaos Oil for SnS, but overall they weren't too bad. Styles were the real killer. Aerial encouraged the mountspam shitters who plagued 4U, Adept was just as bad as the evasion arts while also encouraging fishing for evades in exchange for super moves, it made you near invincible and was horribly balanced; it was supposed to be a high risk, high reward style but they forgot to actually add risk to it. Brave was even worse, it usually had the absolute best offensive and defensive ability of any style for most weapons. Like Adept, it was meant to be "high risk, high reward" but they fucked it up so it has even lower risk than Adept with much higher reward. The only way Brave could be more casualized would be if it automatically evaded for you.

I haven't played World, so take this with a grain of salt World makes a large number of changes that very heavily put me off of it - such as letting you infinitely restock on items at the item box, or adding in a mantle that automatically evades for you, removing Oils from SnS, adding environmental traps, having paid DLC and microtransactions, and having time-locked event exclusive monsters. GU/XX did a lot of stuff wrong, but World looks like it's doing a tonne of shit wrong just from what I can confirm without having played it. I can't say for sure whether one is worse than the other, but XX was pretty bad in a lot of ways, and World looks like it's at least as bad.

The music is the worst part. It just has no "umph" to it. There's no fucking energy in any of the soundtrack, even the old remixes like Teostra's and Kushala's theme are totally bottomless and placid. There's only one theme I actually like in the whole game (Rotten Vale), but even though I like it I think it's poor fight music. Add to that the empty SFX and the weird decision to make monsters bleed rocks and sand and it just doesn't feel that great to play.

They also somehow made Rathalos' roars even more gay and generic.

I haven't played either of the Wii titles so I can't speak on those specifically, but the problem with Monster Hunter in general is that you won't know if you actually like it or not for quite a while. I'd say to emulate Portable 3rd with PPSSPP, and try to clear up through the 5 star village quests. If you're not hooked by then, it's probably just not the series for you.
