nichegamer.com/2018/09/11/microsoft-will-continue-supporting-windows-7-beyond-2020-but-with-new-monthly-charge/

>While Microsoft has postponed the official cut off date for Windows 7 security update support several times, the coming January 2020 cutoff is the real deal. However, the tech giant has recently confirmed that instead of fully cutting off Win7 holdout users, they’ll start charging a monthly subscription fee to get security updates.

c1b851  No.15438003

Yep. It begins! Operating Systems as a Service. This will force most people that use Win7 to migrate to Win10. And then wait until Win10 charges for monthly updates.

But why make Win7 a "service" now? Because Microsoft can alter the ToS of Win7 as a service instead of a product to ban whoever they want from using Windows ever again.

What are the cons of running Win7 on a VM in a Linux distro?

How much performance cost one should expect when running Win7 in a VM compared to of installing it regularly alongside Linux?

When they start charging monthly fees for all basic versions of Windows, I'm sure it will cause a good deal of people to switch to Linux, and hopefully that will start the chain-reaction that converts everyone to Linux. Maybe once everybody is on Linux, people will start porting old games and shit.

The problem, however, is that windows 10 is quite literally spyware and not to mention the fact that no one knows half of the code thats inside the OS. Not to mention that the majority of these .bats and "programs" are made by people who probably havent even opened a windows internal book. Your best bet is to grab 7, install it on an air gapped computer and never connect it to the internet. Make sure encryption on your other drives are used as well if hot swapping isnt used. But to think you can protect against Spyware 10 is max retardation.

>What are the cons of running Win7 on a VM in a Linux distro?

The obvious downside is overhead from the virtualization process. Also, there's normally no access to the gpu, but with PCI passthrough you can give the virtual machine access and supposedly play games just fine. I remember hearing some cards or setups have issues with this for some reason. Otherwise you still retain pretty much everything you can do on Windows, like browsing the internet. You can even copy/paste files from linux into the virtual machine and shit.

>How much performance cost one should expect when running Win7 in a VM compared to of installing it regularly alongside Linux?

If by "regularly alongside Linux", you mean a dualboot, it has AFAIK 0% performance cost, however I have one and really wouldn't recommend it. If you keep all your files on windows, you don't get much of the benefits of Linux, and if you keep all your files on Linux you need to reboot your PC every fucking time you need a file (since Linux should be encrypted, esp. with windows installed on the same machine).

Would personally try eating the performance cost of having Windows in a VM to see if it's acceptable before trying anything else. Unfortunately, I don't know what the cost is. Could even vary a lot depending on the card or game.

if you can do hardware passthroughs, expect no performance loss. This means your video card, sound card, and keyboard will be able to act independently of the processor, and communicate directly to the win 7 drivers.

If not, your processor will be doing double duty, telling the components and itself what to process, which is very laggy.

Checking those ID dubs.

Nice info, anons, thanks.

Yes, I meant dualboot.

Looking up PCI and Hardware Passthrough now.

If I can have more off-topic questions:

1. What prevents files from being accessed by all OSs, assuming each OSs is installed in different HDDs? Does it has to do with partitioning or file system types (e.g. NTFS or EXT4-something?)

2. Why should one encrypt Linux when it is dualbooted with Windows?

3. Is there a particular GPU brand, type or model that is ideal for PCI Passthrough?

I considered building a PC around Ryzen 5 1600 and GTX 1060 3GB but I'm willing to change both for a more Gaming Linux friendly setup.

>1. What prevents files from being accessed by all OSs, assuming each OSs is installed in different HDDs? Does it has to do with

partitioning or file system types (e.g. NTFS or EXT4-something?)

absolutely nothing, just have another partition set up for files you want to share between OS's your multi-booting, and make sure they can all read the filesystem, IE FAT/NTFS. Linux can read/write NTFS you just need a special package, it can only read NTFS with the default kernel driver.

>2. Why should one encrypt Linux when it is dualbooted with Windows?

because windows is botnet and you don't want windows reading your sekrit files on linux.

you can use veracrypt to encrypt windows and the partition with files you want to share between OS's, veracrypt works on both windows and linux.

>>15438835

3. Is there a particular GPU brand, type or model that is ideal for PCI Passthrough?

remember your going to need 2 GPU's if you do this. PCI passthrough means you completely isolate that GPU from the host operating system, and pump it to the VM, the host can't use it at all. You need a second GPU for the host. Also the GPU your using for PCI can only be attached to 1 VM at a time.

CCleaner is not in itself malware but it is completely unnecessary:

>the registery doesn't have to be cleaned (zero speed, increase few bytes gained and possible issues)

>all other tasks can be done manually (clearing the bin, your browser history (which shouldn't be created in the first place), removing old update files other garbage (there is a windows tool for it: drive cleaner or however it's called in english))

Furthermore the 32-bit version of the installer actually delivered spyware at a point.

>hurr durr nobody uses 32 bit

>Does it has to do with partitioning or file system types (e.g. NTFS or EXT4-something?)

Yeah, it's because Windows doesn't normally support ext, but you can install a driver that allows it to do that. I don't recommend it, since the main benefit of Linux is privacy, and letting windows view those files kind of defeats that.

>Why should one encrypt Linux when it is dualbooted with Windows?

Encryption is just another layer of security in case windows can somehow scan parts of your Linux drive. It's a bit paranoid, but it's a good idea to encrypt Linux even outside of dualboots anyways. The more walls between your data and someone trying to access it, the better.

>Is there a particular GPU brand, type or model that is ideal for PCI Passthrough

According to the method used in vid related:

>Two different GPUs, so people tend to get a CPU with an integrated GPU for their host machine

>The two different GPUs can't be the same model

>CPU needs to support Intel VT-d & VT-x or AMD's virtualization acceleration tech. equivalent

>CPU & motherboard needs to support IOMMU remapping

>GPU needs to support UEFI (apparently can still do passthrough without this, but it's more complicated)

>Lots of RAM (At least 8GB for the VM and Host, so 16GB total)

>Two monitors if you want to make your life easier (one plugged into the motherboard, the other into the GPU)

>The video mentions and extra mouse & keyboard so you can pass those, but could probably use one set with something like Synergy or "Mouse without Borders"

So, it's pretty complicated. Good to try out on a spare computer if you have one. Definitely make a backup.

I don't see this as an issue. You will either be able to do a registry hack (like with XP) to continue receiving security updates until 2023, or you can simply pirate the ISO. With Steam's new Steam Play (and general push for games on Linux), 2023 will have been plenty of time for things to mature. Even if you switch over on 2020, a year's worth of work on Proton (Steam's implementation of WINE + DXVK) will yield great results I'm sure.

>Maybe no one cares about pandering to retards and that's why it's one of the better operating systems

We can have just a few distros pander to retards, something like Ubuntu or Steam Linux, make them Paid software, even, but leave the openness of the code to a certain degree. Leave the kernel development and all other distros outside of the retards' market, so that it won't impact things too much negatively. But then they're not adept at installing OSes so they end up paying for tech customer support to install Windows, around $3 once, so your statement holds a part of the truth.

this is a serious problem. windows 10 is abysmal. windows 7 is mediocre but it works with games, so what am i supposed to do as time goes on? get 2 partitions, one for gaming/windows7 and one for linux/general computer usage?

while microsoft and valve work together to phase out win7 so no new games are playable on it? i guess the only way i'll play new games is if they make a linux version, or i guess i'll just play consoles.

Rather than partitions, it's much easier to install them in separate drives, and it keeps one from messing up the other. I recall there was some Win10 update that """accidentally""" broke Grub for many people.

windows 7 doesnt do that. though having 2 drives is also doable. tbh i'd probably just have a seperate computer. one with windows 7, emulators, roms, games, etc. and then a general usage computer with some kind of linux distro.

The entire win10 push by Microsoft is to make Windows an operating service dependent on their servers to operate. Most people using win10 had it forcibly installed through windows update like a virus, and collaboration with nvidia is deliberate making hardware incompatible with win7 via driver updates.

The end goal is endless shekels from monthly operating fees. The cause for this change of policy involving old OSes is right there in the article "they’ll start charging a monthly subscription fee to get security updates."

You don't pirate the OS itself you use the crack for it on a legit copy instead, which is distributed for free.

Well that's a non sequitur if I ever saw one. You can hate the new CoC without going full retard, you know.

>But why make Win7 a "service" now?

Actually it's because a lot of corporations and businesses still use it and instead of just dropping support completely like they could have done they will still provide it to corps that pay for it.

As for Windows 10 they're likely planning to make a consumer edition free while making the business version subscription based. The thing is that smartphones pretty much fucked the OS market so instead they will try to shift their users to use a Microsoft marketplace for applications, because that's where the profit is to be found these days.

Shit can you run games on that though? The only reason I have a shitty second-class citizen HDD with Windows 7 installed on it is for the occasional video game that doesn't work on Linux and/or one of my consoles.

It already kind of is. The trial you get for Windows 10 is actually endless.

You also got a free upgrade if you pirated windows 7 earlier. So yeah, I think they will make it officially free sooner or later. And with that it's going to be a perpetual OS with free updates, no point in releasing a completely new version every couple of years if you don't sell it.

It's just a shame they have completely pajeeted the OS after Ballmer made the perfect modern OS with Windows 7. The touch garbage never took off and the UI isn't consistent at all. It's just been complete garbage since Windows 8 released.

I'm actually slowly becoming a normalfag since most modern vidya is shit, so's the anime and then there's all these hostile consumer bullshits from microshit, denuvo etc that i'm just starting to get fed up and not even bother with it.

Better just get a dog and go out for a walk, visit the bar in the weekends, socialize, get a girl, have kids, go to work, engage in politics outside of /pol/ to save the white race and gas the kikes, read a book etc than bother with the modern vidya/tech apart from what's necessary to maintain my image and contacts amongst normalfags.
