The original game crash didn't originate solely on base sales, but on the overall loss of interest and faith in the industry on the part of the consumers. When all games become pretty much the same or as shit as the older ones, that's when you'll see a big crash.
As it is right now, companies like Nu-tendo are correctly identifying a nostalgia trend that will relapse every x-ty years, hence why they're trying so desperately to destroy fan projects and old roms. They want to capitalize on the fact that they can release New Super Ultra Mario 64 2 4DS XD The Lost Level + Year of the Waluigi DLC all they want, people will always go and play the classics because that's where the good content is. People have probably played more time Mario 64 and its mods than all of the New Super Mario Bros. series games combined. It also ties in with how the gaming industry is trying to focus more and more on Online Multiplayer Only and Cinematic Experiences, they're the only two genres of games they know will always turn on a profit no matter how insignificant.
E.T. destroyed the industry because it was as scummy a project as it was and the people who bought it were genuinely done with gaming.

What happened before the last crash?
Millions of people spent money buying millions of copies of games, only to realise after the fact that they were getting fucking screwed, which ruined faith in the industry.
In order to get to the next crash we need to get to the point where games sell millions of copies despite being utter shit, at which point people will clue in.
People have to buy the shit en masse before they realise it's shit and the game industry is gaming them.

Don't be so sure about it. Another thing that killed vidya at the time is the fact that every major console had pretty much the same shitty library as the other. Nowadays gaming companies know they can't have the same shit happen again and that's why you get games that are vastly different if they're ported to different platforms. But Nu-tendo is trying to kill handheld with the Switch, the Vita itself is dead and many games are being ported over new consoles, too. They can VERY EASILY slip into making the same mistake again.

I don't think Nintendo is trying to kill the handheld. If anything I think the're trying to save it in some form, but they know they're losing the battle to smartphones which, for good or ill, will always have a much higher install base than a dedicated gaming machine.
And they were killing themselves trying to develop for two different platforms at once. Both the 3DS and Wii U had shit starts, and when the Wii U launched and the 3DS was floundering, Nintendo diverted resources to save the 3DS, which worked, but it killed the Wii U in turn.

Which is still largely true, now that all platforms run on x64 hardware and feature 90% of the same library, even PC included, with Nintendo being the only black sheep, and even then the middleware used (Unreal, Unity, even fucking GameMaker) will port to Switch most of the time anyway.
