Its been years since I've emulated and I've got a hankering for playing some N64 games. I've been out of the loop for a while so I have a few questions. Whats the best N64 emulator? I know P64 is a pile of shit and I remember Retroarch working pretty well but has anything better come along? Is Banjo Tooie still pretty much entirely unemulatable?

>the best N64 emulator

Virtual console running through dolphin.

Seriously it's year +22 since the N64 launched and this is the best we have. Sixth generation emulation is absolute dog shit, and it's part of the reason why I don't bother fucking with emulators.

Well you could try using Mupen64 or Project64 1.6 but let's be honest they're shit, although you can play certain games to completion if you don't mind the graphical glitches and nails-on-chalkboard ear grating sound popping that happens because muh shitty fucking drivers holy christ.

Objectively? There are a ton of unfixed bugs. Rogue Squadron III still doesn't run right. It's the best emulator project out there, but it's still not perfect.

It has issues with sound but its by far the best Gen 6 and gen 7 emulator around, though I chalk it up to Nintendo's entries being on the weaker side of hardware.

Of all the games I've played on dolphins I've never had any issues. Graphics are fine and no issues with audio. From what I'm seeing it runs just fine.

1b995b  No.15427219

Using VC actually makes sense because Nintendo did the heavy lifting of getting the idiosyncratic way the n64 did shit to work on more modern architecture

That's the way to do it. That said, it could work better now. They constantly work on things, but it is a moving target, as frequently, some things will break as they fix others. RS3 worked better with an older version, but a massive newer change to rendering broke it again. It's fairly rare to actually find a game that has significant issues, especially if you aren't fooling with features like widescreen hacks and the like.

8d2745  No.15427236

If by heavy lifting you mean hacked together code specific to each game while introducing new bugs, then yes.

This should work for almost every N64 game. The only one which I found issues with is Banjo Tooie with random freezes which can either be circumvented using creating a save state while frozen and then reloading it.

If you want to play it without bothering with that, Banjo Tooie works perfectly on PJ64 with GLN64. You'll need a video card that isn't a piece of shit though.

Its only good for running a few well known titles and even then not well. Play something else and it might not even get ingame.

It has kind of a meme status because having a user interface designed for mouthbreathing retards to the point there are arguments on their github page about neutering features just because retards can't use them.

Mine giving me an example? I've never had any issues with a game on dolphin, non the less have it not even get ingame.

Here's a fishing game I was playing the other day running just fine.

https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=Monster_Hunter_G

Monster hunter G crashes when turning in the first tutorial quest. It is listed as playable.

https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=Dr_Muto

Dr Muto freezes after an unskippable intro cutscene, this is listed as playable too.

https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=Monster_Hunter_Tri

Monster Hunter Tri is listed as playable despite not running at playable framerate on even on an 8700k without using a hack which breaks the bloom to make it unplayable which in turn needs a cheat to fix which is no longer supported on the latest versions.

This is not counting various games which require an absurd CPU to even run at 100% because of basic features from decade ago haven't been touched/reworked/improved.

Virtual Console N64 games each have their own emulator wrapped in under different settings, and is just as inaccurate as Project 64 is you dumb fuck.

Even more inaccurate actually.

They had bugs in them that were long gone from PJ64 back when they were released ranging from timing issues to graphical glitches.

Oh my fucking god can we stop the meme of VC N64 games being accurate. It's not accurate, the VC emulator for N64 games only works for specific games under certain settings. And their emulator is still inaccurate as fuck.

Still included in RetroArch, very nice (IMHO the best choice now for most games if your GPU supports it), but development seems very slow, with the last commit being months ago. Worse, the Vulkan porting efforts don't seem to have gone upstream to Angrylion itself.

I never understood why anons insist on making the game look as ugly as possible by upping the resolution. Every single thing you listed is not needed if you just played the thing on a CRT as was intended, plus you wouldn't have polygons jutting everywhere.

Nigger, if you originally played Quake on a minimum spec Pentium, with the software renderer at 300x200 8-bit, does that mean running it on a modern sourceport like DarkPlaces, let alone the original game at max settings on a modern PC, is "ugly"?

Would N64 games look less "ugly" if on top of the N64's flaws, we added some more, like from the PSX?

N64 games looked like shit back in the day, and this wasn't "artistic intention", it was technical limitations. Especially comparing ports like Turok (PC) or Gauntlet (arcade) on CRT monitors that looked superior both to the TVs N64s were built for, and modern LCDs,.

N64 emulation made progress in these recent times, but only a little. Chances are if it was too slow for you or you couldn't run a game, it's still the case.
