Steam is entrenched to the point that many games' only PC availability is through Steam. There are, fortunately, somewhat viable alternatives who might step up to fill the gap in a Steam suicide scenario, but it'd be a long and arduous process to sink it even intentionally.

Gabe will 100% be dead of a heart attack with a smug smile on his fat treacherous face years before Steam starts having a hard time.

Valve doesn't pre-cache every possible option, it just serves you a good fit and then blurs out the stuff you don't personally want to see.
