Just finished the arctic levels and feels like the title cannot decide if it wants to test the players ability or give them a dangerous ocean world to explore.

It's just shitty old not-platformers for fishfuckers.

Just download dolphin porn and be done with it.

>not-platformers

Oh, thanks for mentioning that. The game did feel a bit like a precursor to NiGHTS in some aspects of the movement.

What did you not like about it and what did you like about it? I have only ever beat the first one and I found it to be very enjoyable. Some back tracking was annoying and the last levels "Meat Machine" or something along those lines was pure bullshit but glad I beat it.

The sequel improves on a lot, makes it more enjoyable but it's still fairly challenging.

I remember playing this one back in the day, I used to be terrified of the shark because I had no idea how to beat him.

>What did you not like about it

So far (Because I haven't beaten it yet, doubtful I'm even halfway through it), the hit detection due to how inconsistent it is with darting at enemies and how you can still get hurt, and how there is little space and warning on the screen to be aware of your surroundings (Even with the mini-map).

>what did you like about it?

Strangely, I do like the difficulty of it. The music makes me want to find the OST. And, the…alien feel of the game's world (I don't know how to describe that last one).

Much as I loved the improvements the PS2 port provided they put a dolphin song behind virtually every single piece of music in the game. It wasn't intrusive but Defender of the Future has an astounding ambient and atmosphere soundtrack the likes of which I haven't experienced in other games. It goes from pleasant and peaceful to contemplative to outright horrifying.

I'm getting autistic here but the height of the game is Man's Nightmare which is a unique concept wherein dolphins are rendered retarded and mankind utilizes the technology of Atlantis to combat The Foe in addition to using dolphins as a form of slave labor. Eventually, mankind leaves the planet to combat The Foe, abandoning their dolphin laborers (split into sects each responsible for a particular task) who still revere and worship mankind but without their guidance lack the intelligence to continue their work. As Ecco continues through this nightmare post apocalyptic world (complete with underwater monsters and shit) he begins a long process of reactivating machinery that allegedly with reunite mankind with dolphinkind. It is revealed that mankind and The Foe actually killed one another off and when Ecco recovers one of the split orbs that fractured the beings of dolphins, granting them their intelligence back. The dolphin laborers reveal that the engine Ecco inadvertently brought back to life is a form of insurance that will destroy the planet as a final fuck you to The Foe. So Ecco scales this volcanic peak through a series of gigantic tubes that are meant to provide the engine with crystals that will usher forth total destruction.

Defender of the Future is a deeply flawed game with numerous errors but fuck if it wasn't a neat title to play during the Dreamcast's early years.

So, once again, the Dreamcast version of a game is superior?

>the title cannot decide if it wants to test the players ability or give them a dangerous ocean world to explore

yes

>>15415709

Overall I'd say the ps2 version is better. Fixed glitches, more options for completing a certain level, better sonar, etc.

They did cut out one song that plays in one specific place but they replaced it with a mix of every song you've learned

Google a list of differences or try both yourself

(checked)

Are dolphins the delicious brown tomboys of fishfucker bait?
