Also this. Bethesda doesn't make sandbox games, just RPGs in a very big world map.
It's easy to see the difference when you compare them to stuff like Diablo, Titan Quest and similar games. You still make a character that rises in power and adquires better gear as he goes on, explores the world around him, gains reputation with factions to unlock quests and benefits and sees a linear story in the process.
Literally the only difference is that the world itself isn't part of your progression and practically everything is open to you from the start except for the [this lock can't be picked] doors.
If Bethesda made Sandbox games, their gameworld wouldn't feel so fucking lifeless.
The Guilds would actually fulfill a role that they can sometimes fail and you can not only participate but even be expect to as part of your responsabilities.
There'd be trade caravans between settlements that actually make the economy fluctuate, instead of being there just for the players to unload crap.
Leaders would change based on politics and the condition of towns, not just because you completed another chapter in the main quest line. In fact, the main quest would actually freeze and not progress until you completed a set of conditions using every other facet of gameplay to achieve it.
And a lot of other things that, quite frankly, it's so ridiculously easy to include that modders often put Bethesda to shame.
