For me it would have to be Car Combat.

Organizing a crew, hiring gunners, botswains, navigators, sailors. Managing your supplies while risking mutiny. Saving up for a cooler and faster ship. Shooting down suckers and gathering their loot before it sinks to the bottom of the ocean.
It's all gone, nowadays it's kind of a joy to see any sort of naval combat.
I want to have a modern game that simulates the fun of boarding a ship one more time.

I remember spending tens, if not hundreds of hours playing Port Royale when I was young. I still remember my shock when after many weeks of playing I arrived at some random town and suddenly was greeted by an actual storyline about long-lost sister and finding my parents, or something of sorts. I never completed that questline though, it was all too vague and I couldn't be bothered to look for the clues all over the Caribbean.
I was very disappointed when I tried PR2, everything was cut down, and worst of all, the amazing strategic sea battles were gone and replaced with consolized 1-ship-at-a-time arcadey experience.
Anyone know if PR3 is worth trying?

Assassin's Creed Black Flag had a simplistic naval battle mechanic but it did come closest to perfecting the fantasy of being a pirate in a beautiful open world. I never even played the story. I just cruised around in my ship and listened to my boyos sing shanties and look for shit to fight. That game was the saddest mess of wasted potential ever. They were so close to making the ultimate open world pirate game they just ccouln't resist attaching assassin's creed to its hip. You could board ships, use treasure mass to find hidden treasure, hunt whales, go diving for treasure, swashbucklers all day, get in bar fights. That game was almost awesome. But then you remember you are playing assassin's creed and you gotta work in an office building and you're actually just playing a pirate themed game at your desk when they decide to take you out of the fun part for the game for social justice story time.
FUCKING waste.

I think the problem with the genre in the past wasn't the camera effects, but the amount of stuff you drive past. If the game had a lot of clutter around the track, like Wipeout, you generally drove slower so the game could keep up. If the game was ultra fast like F-Zero, everything was really spartan around the track.
What's needed to make these perfect is as much clutter as possible, as close to the track as possible, with as little repetition as possible. I think modern hardware is powerful enough to give us the true SANIC FAST experience we need.

It's funny you should say that, since TES at least in terms of where it is now isn't really the best example except for that the game's open world, more-or-less immersive simulative design philosophy is just more conducive to having more content added to it than a lot of games' design philosophies are. Aside from that design philosophy of the games being conducive to modding in that sense, Morrowind's mod plugin format really was arguably quite innovative back in 2002, but the engine's mod support hasn't improved at all in the sixteen years since (all the actual gameplay functions are still just as hardcoded as ever, script support has arguably gone downhill since Morrowind not counting the developments that have been made by fans with the script extenders for each game, the file formats are getting more and more locked down with each new game, the wait before the official tools are released for each game is getting longer and longer and the developers are getting more and more hostile to players "hacking" each game by modding them before the official tools are released…), and the official tools for each game are avoided whenever possible because they can introduce game-breaking bugs where the fan-made tools never would - as well as just because there's a lot of very, very basic editing functionality that the official tools make it very hard to do when, as the fan-made tools show, they really should be very easy to do.
Still, I feel like if more developers put the care into mod support that was put into Morrowind back in 2002, or just put a bit more thought into the design philosophies of their games and the engines behind them in general, or, fuck, just stopped refusing to publicly release the SDKs they've already made and used themselves, or, fuck again, just actively preventing players from modding and building on their games, then we really would have a much more vibrant medium with a lot more creativity in it and a lot more content being released for every game on a much more frequent basis.
But then there's just shit like Crysis, which had an amazing SDK and an amazing modding community that had sprung up around it - except that virtually all of the game's mods, tools, and community resources were hosted on an official modding hub for the game which was nuked right when Crysis 2 came along. Can't have our mediocre, consolized sequel having to compete with what our own fans have made, of course. :^)

What really gets me is games built around a (by gamedev standards) really user-friendly authoring system that modders are likely to have access to, like Unreal or Unity, but who refuse to just cough up the tiny number of extra tools they pasted on?
It's amazing that so many older games shipped on release with the tools the devs used but polished up sitting right in the same folder, complete with carefully made user manuals and tutorials, plus full official tech support. But now the most recent one I can think of is, what, StarCraft II?

Text Adventures… except instead of just black text, you'd have an image of wizend old man sitting by the fire, or some other suitable character audibly telling you an interactive story in which you get to make all of the decisions you normally would in a text adventure game - but you're telling him, creating an interaction somewhat like a DM in a role playing game. The story teller would even be able to give you hints on what to do next, and if you're good at the meta - certain choices they like which make the story more exciting or which please them would give them more leniency toward you in certain scenarios. Maybe even have the room you're in being fully rendered and have item based puzzles in there which allow you to give the storyteller certain items or perform actions that make them like you better. The inverse also being true… with certain items, actions, and gameplay styles making them like you less and being clammy about hints or introducing new scenarios that punish you.
Since there were very few options that the old text parsers would recognize to pick up on the logic, you wouldn't really have to do much work to make a language recognition system that would allow a far more robust direct voice input. Give the player a virtual notebook to write down important clues and keep track of the game's inventory, but generally repeated text should be told by the storyteller with a bit of variation that doesn't change the information presented to the player - but presents it in a more natural and organic variance.
Since you're only rendering a single room and character, you can dump 90% of the game's budget into voice acting and going balls out render the character in as high a detail as possible to give subtleties and life to it without falling into the uncanny valley.

If they made those today, they'd be way too dumbed down. A good space fighter game needs far more buttons than a gamepad has. Fortunately, Freespace Open is so versatile that it could be used to make just about any space fighter game you want. It already has total conversions for Wing Commander and BSG, plus one for Star Wars that's nearing completion.
