I'm considering getting a new gamepad for PC, my DS4 has had some issues in the past few months. I don't know if it's a driver thing or an issue with the switches, but a lot of button presses are registering twice, and now one of the switches (start button) is barely responding at all. Between that and the shit battery life I'm not really eager to get another one of these.
I was looking at the different 8bitdo pads since I want something with a prominent d-pad for emulation, but the price is a little steep for something that might end up being disappointing. I could just choose the go-to Logitech one for the price, but I don't know, the d-pad just looks awful. Anyone have recommendations for whatever they like to use?

Buffalo SNES USB controllers are really high quality and you can get them for about 12 bucks if you know where to look. I've been using them for 2D games and had no problems at all. For 3D games I used a wired X360 controller. Good luck finding any at a reasonable price, though.

that logitech controller is a MASSIVE FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT btw, analogs are terrible and develop dead zones very quickly and the triggers suck too. I use a Dualshock 4 for controller games, the d-pad isn't ideal but it's not bad and the parallel analogues make using it a lot less awkward than switch pro or xbone controllers.
I'm a switch/PCfag so I got a dualshock and an 8bitdo dongle for my switch so I can seamlessly switch between using my dualshock for PC games that I want to play on pad and switch games that I don't want to play on the joycons/in handheld.

These """third-party""" pads look tempting, but I'm always concerned they'll have some kind of input lag or feel really cheap and not enough people talk about them for me to trust any reviews. I know the logtitech one is definitely shit, people who've bought it to replace a controller always talk about how they regret buying it, but it somehow still gets recommended everywhere.

Third party pads are usually weakest around the bumpers and the stick sockets. If you know how to fix/maintain gamepads this isn't a big problem but if you don't you're better off putting down for a quality gamepad rather than buy a new shitty one every 6 months.

Xbox: Most comfortable, best supported in Steam, but wireless is extremely flaky and batteries a huge hassle
Steam Controller: Works well but the missing stick cripples it for typical games
DS4: Flaky without the official Sony dongle, otherwise superior in most respects to Xbox
Switch Pro: Very nice but a huge hassle to switch from PC to Switch
DS4 seems best if you buy the dongle.

Everything feels cheap, the buttons are stiff, the D-pad is mushy and awful, the plastic creaks if you apply any pressure to it, and the sticks are the worst part. They felt really chintzy in a way only the Chinese can produce. A month and a half after she got it my niece started complaining about the left stick having weird little hiccups, two weeks after that it was broken. I checked it in-game, when I push forward her Inkling moves forward but randomly just stops or turns around (in the video I'm holding the left stick within the 11 to 1o'clock position the entire time) this makes games completely unplayable. I have one of the SF30+ with the analogue sticks and I really like it, but it does feel a bit weird having the analogue sticks there. I think it's because there are no handles to grip so the leverage feels off when trying to make slight adjustments on the analogue.
Of all the controllers I've tried (360, Xbone, PS3, PS4, Logitech) it's the one I prefer the most.
The 360 is dog-shit for 2D games, the Xbone I have is defective.
It either ignores or registers double the input on d-pad and face-buttons, on top of ruining backwards compatibility with their 360 controller drivers to make each analogue trigger a separate axis instead of sharing one as the 360 pads did.
MS cannot make hardware to save their lives.
The PS3 and PS4 controllers I don't like because of the segmented d-pad and they've got compatibility issues with my version of Windows and setting device exclusivity.
There's a new model of the SF30Pro (pic 2) coming out soon that has handles and which in general looks nicer, so I'll get one of those. Until then I'll use pic 1.

God-awful deadzones. You can find plenty of information on the issue. Most prominent with the F310 and the F710. Basically, they have huge deadzones in the middle of the sticks, and they max out before reaching the edge (big outer deadzone). Also shit floaty d-pads with lots of travel make them unfit for fighting games.

The triggers, oh my god the triggers, I can actually use them without getting cramps between my index and middle finger. The joysticks feel much nicer, and they're easier to stick-click too. The whole grip on it is better. Where the Xbone made my hands feel strained and twisted into some awkward unnatural shape, the DS4 is just neutral and relaxed.

The triggers are imprecise and stiffer than a wedding prick which sucks for racing games and anything else where you're holding the trigger and bumpers a lot. The sticks are much the same, with enormous deadzones. The Dpad is an abomination, a solid puck that jiggles around in it's mount.

Also pressing non-contiguous buttons (e.g. X Z, A C) with your thumb on a 6-button layout is impossible, whereas you can press any button combination with a 4 face-button, 2 shoulder button layout. If you just used it for modern pc games, I'd say either get an xbone controller, a ps3 controller (with scptoolkit installed because it creates a driver for the ps3 for native xinput) or a regular 360 controller.
You could use direct input controllers but, to be honest it's a pain in the ass to get them to work with moden games.

If it has a joystick on it, better. I need 2 analog inputs, and one of them bi dimensional and not just mono dimensional like the steering wheel itself to properly play Redout (ship's nose position and sliding is done with the right joystick).

Only disadvantage bluetooth has over the dongle is PS Now, Remote Play, and the audio jack don't work, and the lightbar gimmick in natively supported games will overlap with 3rd party programs' use of it. Or you could be not retarded and use micro-usb with literally everything working.
Any v2.1+ bluetooth adapter will do, or you can connect it through micro-usb avoid shit wireless latency. Lunix has native support out of the box (though audio doesn't work through bluetooth afaik). In Shitdows, games with native DS4 support will work via wire or dongle out of the box (not sure about bluetooth). Failing that, Dinput-compatible games (especially newer ones) are hit-or-miss, XInput-compatible games require an external program or (((Steam)))'s controller support regardless of connection method.

DS4Windows is the most common program used for DS4. Just get a non-abandoned fork (e.g. Ryochan7's) or whatever. It's 200x more customizable than any official tool. You can remap any button, control vibration and the lighting bar (have it display battery %, or outright disable it), use the touchpad as a mouse and scroll wheel, use gyro for controls, add profiles, program shortcuts, etc.
Only complaint I have about DS4 is you can't disable charging, which is bad for battery life. Unplugging the battery requires opening the controller.

>what, they make one now?
There's been a DirectInput driver available for a long time. Soyny won't ever make an XInput driver. XInput doesn't support inputs beyond those of a 360 controller, which has less than the DS4, so there isn't any advantage for them to make one.

Thank you so much. I was having issues with my DS4Windows and it didn't occur to me it might've been abandoned. I'll test this other one and see.

If you're getting the 8bitdo one DO NOT go for the analog sticks model. Analog quality build is dogshit and will wear off with normal use.

I have no idea why 360 gamepad is basically impossible to find these days. What you can find are 90% falsely advertised unbranded knockoffs or overpriced used ones.
