Unsubstained. The Vessels (the player character and the fake final boss) are genderless because they're literally Void twisted into bug form. Hornet is also apparently a Vessel, but she's called the Gendered One because she was concieved by Herra instead of being molded, and thus she's more or less a biological bug. How the fuck the Pale King managed to do that tho, no idea.

I've had some fun wandering around and exploring when I got it on the summer sale. Some of the bosses can be pretty simple if you purposely cheese them by just taking all the damage to the face while constantly chopping at them.
Boss rush is kinda mediocre imo, but provides that challenge for whoever wants it.
Some of the background art in the arenas hide or blend certain attacks or bosses into them, making it bullshit to see them before you get hit. They should really fix that.

Hollow Knight was one of the best games of 2017 despite its flaws, and it's only had more content and technical improvements added since, for FREE. I'm in a bit of an odd spot with Hollow Knight, personally speaking. Overall the game is very good and I enjoyed it, but there were a couple of design/technical problems which held it back and prevent me from calling it perfect.
Technically speaking, the movement is more clunky than it should be: there is a small delay between pressing left/right and your character actually moving, which makes reactionary evasion slightly worse, especially given your intentionally tiny range. The patch I played last year also stuttered noticeably whenever I jumped into water, which made certain areas a pain to traverse. There were a couple other problems, but from my understanding the game has ironed out most of these.
Design wise, the combat is way too simple for a game of this length, even if the focus is on exploration. You have one attack for much of the game, with rudimentary magic spells (projectile, ground pound, uppercut which is barely larger than your upwards sword swing) filling in the rest. Outside of boss battles, more of the game's difficulty than I'd like comes from large enemy health pools or annoying patterns. This is alleviated by the staggering number of bosses, though, so I can't be too harsh.
Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of well-designed enemies (especially considering the hundreds of different assets required for all of them), but I would have preferred some light/heavy attack options for interacting with them instead of just a standard slash or fireball.
Where Hollow Knight shines (and this is something you need to experience for yourself) is the exploration and feeling of getting lost in the kingdom of Hallownest. There are so many areas and NPCs to talk to, many of which have quests for you or their own little environmental stories, the world truly feels alive. The bugs change on their own schedules, and so on, rather than being tied to story bosses or other obviously important events.

Yep, just the Troupe Master variant fortunately, not the Nightmare version. The fourth pantheon tries to be even more of a pain in the ass by throwing in Soul Tyrant, Lost Kin, Traitor Lord, White Defender, Watcher Knights, Failed Champion, etc. but I actually got through it on the first try, I just lost all interest when I saw what the end boss was.

Yeah there's something weird with the controls, I can't remember if it was that was on release or not. I think there's something in the game that was conflicting with my driver. It kept shuffling around which button was "Back", made it a pain in the ass to swap charms.

Didn't have too much of a problem with that myself, although I don't like the controls at all. I had more of an issue with the inability to cancel dashes and the startup on the doublejump changing your vertical positioning.

I like the delay because it gives a sense of weight to the character. I understand why some wouldn't, but this seems rather subjective.
One technical aspect which isn't subjective is the lack of slopes in the game. I don't mean slopes down which the knight can slide, but ones like those in Metroid that can be scaled by simply walking. Everything is at a ninety degree angle, and this makes the movement monotonous.

If good bosses and exploration do it for you, you should enjoy it. Only getting as far as the Kamehameha doesn't give you much taste of the game, really. At that point, you're still essentially in the introduction. It doesn't really open up until you get one or two of the movement abilities.

It takes about 5 hours for Hollow Knight to become almost as fun as the first level of Megaman X.
Prior to the endgame, Hollow Knight is a gimped piece of shit, not even remotely as fun as Rabi Ribi. A rare case of metroidvania mechanics working against itself. Only afterwards, when you can move and fight like you normally, naturally would like to, it becomes a good game.
