What are some setpieces where the sheer coolness and manliness of it makes it even more memorable to you?

To me it'd be stage 4 in Contra 3:

>start off with a motorcycle chase against several hoverbikes and a tank

>rip apart the belly of a battleship piece by piece while driving under it

>grab onto the missile of a friendly helicopter while fighting a jetpack ninja with a grappling hook

>the missile you're hanging on to gets launched towards the stage boss, and you have to take out its shield while constantly jumping between missiles in mid-air as extra missiles come in from behind to serve as platforms while the boss is shooting at you

Contra Hard Corps is nothing but nonstop set pieces.

Come to think of it, most side scrolling shooters from back in the day were based around set pieces not unlike modern day movie "games" except they were actually engaging.

Another one would be Stage 2-2 of Sin & Punishment where you're flying around on a piece of telepathically levitating debris while shooting down warships, fighter planes and sea monsters with just your pistol and constantly reflecting back missiles. There's several mini-bosses in this stage alone, and it just keeps fucking escalating to the point where you're having a duel with the main bad guy of the enemy forces standing on top of his own plane while flying it around, and it doesn't even end there. After that you have to dismantle a giant flying fortress piece by piece, and then pierce right through its core in an Ace Combat-style final mission obstacle hazard, and take care off the bomb it launches before it hits your friend who's turned into an alien kaiju.

Hard Corps' level of overall setpieces even exceeds that of Contra III, though IMO Stage 4 is just the best.
