PSP/3DS is too much of a pain in the ass to bring to work because it's a warehouse (even though I mostly do a desk job) and they can be easily broken.

I already use a piddly wii-nunchuck style controller for this android VR 3rd person shooter, and it seems to work well enough. I'm not all that concerned about getting a "good" one, if there is such a thing, just as long as it works comfortably period, and fits whatever phone, case or not.

Never had one, but they seem always very cheaply made, have alot input lag and carrying a controller in your pocket all the time seems rather inconvenient. Personally, I just emulate turn based JRPGs on my phone. They work perfectly fine with touch, but I dunno if you like turn based so.

Get an handheld mate. I recommend the 3DS or even a Switch. The Switch in particular was made specifically for this kind of shit.

If possible get an actual wired controller adapter instead of a chinese (unless is 8bitdo por Gamesir) bluetooth one. Any low-mid range phone should be able to handle up to PSP/DS emulation (and even some Dreamcast) without issue

I have an iPega something or other and what's weird is in some emulator apps (not all) the d-pad had input lag while the joystick didn't. Granted, my version of android and the app are ancient now so maybe they improved it.

My phone is ancient too and I was considering upgrading it, but with new video cards coming near the end of September I'll probably just dump my money into that. Selling my older GPU afterward will likely gain enough cash to upgrade my phone, but much later. Could try using the iPega again afterwards with something that can actually do Gamecube emulation, but if it's no good I'll use a clip on kit for a Dualshock 4 instead.

Get the best option money can buy: a dual shock 4 + a smart clip, unless you want to take a gamble on chink plastic and shitty parts that last a month. DS4 isn't exactly expensive and the clip costs like $10 at gamestop

I've been looking for one myself, OP. All I've found is horrible chink shit full of input lag, shitty drivers and obnoxious deadzones on the sticks. I don't think what we want exists.
