It was confirmed to have it before launch, then a week before it did they seem to have quietly removed it
This is fucking huge since Sega has never removed Denuvo from any games that have had it, this would be their first which is historic for them. I don't know how much this has to do with their new COO Ian Curran, but this is a good sign.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/758330/Shenmue_I__II/
If you care, send Sega a message for doing this. They did a good thing and if we're lucky they might remove it from their other shit, or at least their upcoming shit too. Just thank them for doing this if you do bother to send anything, positive reinforcement goes a long way I think

It's an odd thing to see after they started tacking on Denuvo to their ports, but I'm not about to start jumping from one instance of it.
What's their next upcoming game besides Shenmue 1/2? If that also doesn't have Denuvo I'll start paying attention to Sega again.
That said shooting them an email or the like might do some good. You think they'd give a reason if you asked them why they didn't put Denuvo on it?

I'm skeptical about the first one. They'd be the first to admit to the bad reputation it has and putting action before their words by removing it before launch. That'd be quite something, but unlikely in my estimation.
The second is more likely. I guess it depends on their expected sales and the amount it costs to rape your game with denuvo.
I definitely would like to know their motivations for it.

You can also try contacting Valve and request they require DRM be revealed on the store page and prohibit hiding this information in the EULA. Forcing companies to admit they use DRM hurts them (they wouldn't hide it if they didn't). From Steam's prospective there's no good reason why they should have an option to disclose DRM but not require its use and it requires minimal resources for them to implement.

Shenmue as a series is phenomenal and is criminally underrated. The music is fantastic, the story is great, the characters are goofy but likable, and we have minigames and other cool side activities other than the main quest that you can goof off on.
The two main things which can turn some people off from Shenmue is the fact that it is somewhat a "real life" simulator (be prepared to wait a lot and have "boring" days) and that the combat is either okay or downright awful (since they used a Virtua Fighter engine during the time for the combat. A 2D fighter for a 3D game, I think you can see where the problem is). Either way, Shenmue is good, I like it, and you should try and play it.

I'm surprised nobody has made any effort to unearth any foul play on denuvo's part. Even if corporate executives are too stupid to see why it's only a detriment to their products, there has to be something that's "convincing" so many companies to adopt it. And denuvo knows their product is bullshit. They are fully aware of the issues the software causes, and when you're deliberately selling a shitty product en masse, you're probably doing it in an unfair manner. Either blackmail, cronyism, or whatever other shady deals can occur between video game developers and denuvo. There has to be something.

The game's a prototype Yakuza game, but where Yakuza lets you go around and do whatever you want, Shenmue is a little more restrictive and fluid in that you're not told where to go and you have to actually learn the game's areas yourself and ask around, which slows the pace down to something more relaxed.

So they're patching the game by breaking it? DO they study their customer's reaction when their game suddenly can't play on their PC because of the bloat? It's like they WANT people to not buy their future games. If this were a supermarket industry people would be selling games tagged "Now without Denuvo!" because when something bad happens in the food industry, like the sudden info bomb that was Trans Fat, businesses start dropping that shit like it's hot and instantly put up tags informing people that they no longer carry items with the stuff in it.
Stores that don't do that lose entire isles of produce because the drop in customers is real. Supermarkets are a tightly run industry because the money is buy low sell lowish so the actual profit margins are mid-tier as far as profit gains go, but I guaruntee that about a year or two down the line we're going to see a fucking DROP happen with Denuvo after the normalfags catch on.
If you're smart you won't fall for the pirating propaganda bullshit and just sell your game. People crack protection all the time, if it's made it's gone. But what's really important for a product is exposure. Putting Denuvo on a game limits the game's attention in other countries, because outside of America pirating is the standard for low income areas, and low income areas fucking talk.
You don't have to worry about those guys, because they'll pirate everything, and the middle income areas and high income areas are more likely to buy then low income, but low speaks to middle speaks to high thanks to the internet.
If you put Denuvo on the game you're lowering the attention it gets from an entire financial class, one of the most common, one that talks and creates connections out of necessity to survive. And while it does get cracked, if it's not day one available people WILL pass your game over and it'll get less attention because the hype train on shit like this gets the most attention day one.
And putting Denuvo on these games makes the lower income areas TALK about how shit your game is because of Denuvo and how it doesn't work well because of it. This isn't a case of bad publicity being good, this is a case of bad publicity causing the worst thing that can happen to your game, DISINTEREST.
The killing words in the marketing sphere are "I no longer give a shit about this". And that's what Denuvo does that fucks you over subtly. It's not just invasive, it's bloat, and that's enough for most people to not get it.
