Nothing depresses me more than the death of handhelds.
Sony will never make another one, Nintendo is moving away from traditional handhelds, phones have replaced the casual masses desire for portable gaming. I grew up on handhelds and was in my late teens when they hit their peak with the DS and PSP. Being technologically advanced enough to run any kind of game while still limited enough to encourage creativity and maximum optimisation. The Vita was the last hurrah of handhelds, the last time they truly pushed the boundaries of what was possible.
In 10 years handhelds will be forgotten to time, like how a child today looks at you and says "The fuck is a VHS?".

Television has been slowly dying for the past 15 years. Though there was a failed attempt to bring television to phones (DMB), streaming has made it obsolete. Same with physical audio and video media.
And as for gaming? Well, if the Switch is anything to go by, then that's on the menu too I'm afraid.

There is a marked difference between "handheld" and "portable". Pic related is considered "handheld", but would you call it portable?
The whole point of a portable console is to fit in one's pocket. To be able to take it with you without wearing anything extra, and maybe a spare set of batteries too. That's one of, if not the main contributing factor as to why none of Nintendo's competitors were able to beat it. Game Gear was too big, as was the Nomad. The Lynx was too big. And of course, the PSP was too big. The only rival that got it right was the Neo Geo Pocket, and they were never a rival.
If it can't fit in your pocket and needs a case, then it arguably isn't a portable. It's a handheld and that's it. A modern Mac where all the internals are built into the monitor can be considered a "handheld" if you carry it with you.

Not even close. The Switch Tablet is 6 3/4in in length without the JoyCons. The PSP is just under that at 6 5/8ths inch. With the JoyCons attached, it's about 9 3/8ths. The Switch is also significantly taller, at 4 inches - while the PSP is only about 2 1/4. In the pair of cargo pants I have with the deepest pockets, the switch is long enough that part of the screen and one of the entire joycons are sticking up out of the pocket.

Any of them doing anything impressive only exacerbated the recharging/battery nonsense to the point where you were almost as tethered to an outlet or ready supply of batteries as you would be on a fucking console/desktop PC. Something else to point out, is that sticking a Nintendo Switch in your pockets is a fucking terrible idea due to the way Switch cools itself compared to actual handhelds which are intended to go into pockets. The PSP, 3DS, Vita, your goddamned phone… all these other devices, they all use passive cooling. So the outside of the unit is more or less a completely closed unit aside from dedicated inputs. Lint and dust and shit - even if they get into these ports, aren't drawn further into the system and across vital components.
The Switch is cooled with a fan, and has air intakes on the back of the tablet. While you're not likely to have it on in your pocket - lint and crumbs and other shit you nasty fucks have in your unwashed clothes there's plenty of horror stories about terrible hygiene from the Nintendo/Smash fan communities at conventions will rub into the grating covering the air intakes - and will get sucked into the unit by the airflow when you do turn it on.

It forced devs to think twice on how to properly use their tools, leading to more thoroughly evaluating what and how, rather than just jumping to the first thing that is thought of as "cool" and churning it out mechanically. This is likely because the technical constraints required to stay in a creative mindset in order to be able to use the tools at all.
It's not just the handhelds in particular, but it was true for older systems from previous decades as well. Old games were interesting partly because of technical constraints, not in spite of them. Handhelds were just the last remnants of that rule

Handhelds failed because there is no reason to own one unless you are a child. I can't think of the last time I actually had an opportunity to play a handheld console besides my phone because I'm not a kid who rides in the back of my moms car for a decent amount of time anymore. I'm either driving, at work, on my lunch break or doing something social with friends when I'm outside the house and in none of these situations is it appropriate or convenient to pull out a handheld, or even your phone for that matter but that doesn't stop some people. When I am at home why would I pull out a handheld instead of just turning on the TV or my PC to play some games? Handhelds are dying because kids have smart phones now and companies like Nintendo are responding in a smart way by changing the direction their handheld consoles are going like with the Switch. Pulling out a handheld in public as a grown adult is not unacceptable just because of the sight of it like Quentin would like you to believe but it's that a grown responsible adult should not even have the time to do such things in public or they should have the foresight to respect the time of their friends and family when out in a social event. The only exception in any of this is if you ride the bus on a regular basis but even then pulling a 3ds out in public transit will just make you a huge target for a robbery anyway.

PSP was pretty much the same size as a Game Boy. A little longer but much thinner in both width and depth. Vita is about the same. Game Gear was a bit much for me to carry in my pocket, but I carried my original Game Boy, PSP, and Vita around all the time.

The PSP and Vita had lot of ports of home consoles games though. The main difference is that they were actually the fun kind as a whole that focused more on gameplay than graphix
I still agree on the idea that you wont see handheld games on the Switch namely because of the hardware itself, especially how it tries to compete against home consoles directly. And yeah the size of the Switch is too massive, the tablet form itself (without the joycons) is bigger than the Vita.

This is stupid. The PSP and Vita got tons of console ports and they were great. Hell, one of the best things to use a Vita for is Remote Play so you can play PS4 games with the comfiness of a handheld, so long as you've got a good connection.
I get the point of handheld games preferably being something easier to pick up and play in short bursts if you want, but even on the original Game Boy, Link's Awakening was fundamentally no different from Link to the Past gameplay wise. And the most popular handheld games are Pokemon, which are no different from console RPGs aside from the trading and battle aspects, which have always been secondary in practice, and have just become less and less relevant over time, especially since it's all online now.
