There's a new expansion where you can play the jem'hadar. I just started again after I quit for like 8 months. There's also going to be a new expansion this fall where they inject the cancerous STD all over STO, there's already 30 pages of drama on the forums.
It really isn't a bad game if you ignore the lockboxes, and blatant jewry, and lack of any multiplayer purpose.

there's a ridiculous amount of single player content, it can be played with others but it's not common. a lot of it is voice acted by the actual cast of the different series.
there's a stupid amount of ships and abilities, some super rare, there's so much shit at this point i don't know how the dev's keep track of all of it. the combat isn't bad at all and there's definitely strategy involved. the problem is strategy for what. the multiplayer revolves around 25 or so queue's/maps with 3 levels of difficulty. easy is well, easy, advanced is doable, expert is fucking impossible, which means you'll have a hell of a time even getting into one of those queue's because nobody even tries and the rewards aren't much better than easy.
PvP exists, but those queue's are also largely dead, you could wait an hour before getting in one. it seems like that, and even the expert PvE queue's, are organized in private channels.

i don't think it matters, because they are constantly pumping new free shit into the game all the time, as bait for you to open more lockboxes. the free shit will be set equipement, but to get the rest of the set and the bonus's your going to have to lockbox gamble or just buy it straight off the exchange.
you can also get the old shit off the exchange, everything that comes out of a lockbox can be sold on the exchange, and people lockbox gambling get the old shit all the time and throw it on the exchange because they already have it or don't want it.
you really don't have to put money into it though. most people roll with 4-5 alts and grind the currency that converts to the money currency, there's a cap on how much you can do per character per day, but no cap on how many characters you can run.
i swear some of these fucking people playing this game though. they put thousands of dollars into these fucking lockboxes, just for some flavor of the week 3d model of a ship.

I played a few hours like two years ago, and as far as MMOs go, it's not the worst I've played. Though the thing I like most about it, is that it's fully soloable (at least in the early levels I played). Hell, there's user-made content which is basically fan-episodes of the show if you want to engage in some cringy OC with a game engine that's far too limited to produce the "TV Show" episodes these guys are trying to write. But being solo-friendly pretty much just destroys any reason for it to be an MMO. In a lot of ways, it's like PSO2 where the main meat of the game is just buying costumes and hanging out in the lobby showing off your gear like a fucking convention hall - except without all the nerd BO. Never spent a penny on it, and from what I hear you can obtain pretty much everything in the game through gameplay. Except there's a shit-ton of different kinds of currencies (Dilithium, Latinum, and Zen coins - are the only ones I remember). I don't know if you can convert one to the other - but it's a fucking mess I'm sure that was intentionally designed just to obfuscate real-world costs and get you to say fuck it and buy everything directly Zen coins.
Other than that, like a dummy, I bought Ubishits Star Trek: Bridge Crew for PSVR triple dummy, because I bought a PS4 and a PSVR too and it's pretty fun for precisely the one time you play through it. The really a multiplayer funhouse with a single-player mode tacked on. And since, dumb as I am, I'm still dumb enough yet to pay for the multiplayer paywall scam - there's absolutely nothing there. I just boot it up once in a while to stand at tactical and jerk off on the bridge of the Enterprise D - right into the back of where Patrick Stewart's bald fucking head would be if he were rendered in-game.

Aside from ones that were designed to grind in, the ones I tried that had a story were pretty decent, though the only two I can remember was one about a Federation conspiracy to break the prime directive and allow a genocidal industrial level society (while covering that part up) into the Federation because they had rich veins of dilitium the federation needed, and one about a space anomaly that created a timeloop. May just have been how late I played it that those were the only ones with a decent ranking.

I was foolish enough to buy a life time sub when the game came out, initially had huge buyers remorse, but now after all the DLC and Lootbox creep the games had, it wasn't such a bad deal in the end. At worse I Spent $300 on the game because I got it at launch. I was extremely pissed given the garbage condition the game was in at Launch, but since Perfect Worlds took over I've gotta say the games improved a heap. Its funny though when I log back in and find myself able to buy everything on the Zen store 3x over.
The people that spent more than $300 on the game got ripped off badly. Even though spending $300 alone was already pretty stupid but we weren't to know the game would go F2P, because when I bought the Lifetime Sub the game was still subscription based.
I laugh though when ever I log back in to see how stupidly rich I am. Shame that the games boring.

Yes they the same lockbox and lobi ships exactly, because all three have been replaced by newer T6 versions. The Keldon is just a T6 Galor with a spiral-wave disruptor lance console, and the two Jem'Hadar ships had their consoles improved with added stats such as more turn rate and accuracy for the Dread's console. Every old lockbox/lobi ship that has been replaced with a T6 version has had their special consoles given passive stats to go along with their usual abilities, but only the T6 version's.

The currency in that game is a mess and this current mess we are in is actually the simplified version of it all.
Starting with Energy credits or EC for short, this is the currency you can gain by doing just about anything in game, the currency is at the same time least and most useful currency, mainly because the EC stores offer just shit that is worse than random loot drops and not even worth as stand ins for weapons you might add later, but EC is also used in most other item stores and exchange, in latter, prices are as inflated as the average food prices in modern day Venezuela.
In the days of yore before F2P, sto used to have different currencies for different activities, PvP tokens, PvE tokens, Exploration tokens, etc.
Then cryptic decided to simplify it and rolled all those currencies under dilithium.
Dilithium worked as a sort of stuff you could get in most any activity and you could refine 8000 units of it per day.
All was going well until people started grinding dilithium, which led to some folks grinding tons, then only logging in once a day to refine their shit and the n log out.
So cryptic added few stop gaps for that, like adding a timer into stfs, so you couldn't just do cure space elite for several hours in a constant row (back then there was more people playing that shit too) and later still when they rolled in their hated delta rising expansion, they lowered the dilithium rewards for stfs.
Regardless of this, they still hand out dil like candy and most players play the game in a way where they log in once a day to refine their shit then log out, which is something cryptic doesn't want because they masturbate over the time folks are playing their game.
Also over time they have added the reputation marks for different new flavor of the year enemy.
Of course you couldn't get anything with just those, you also had to drop in dilithium and EC and some random stuff (until they changed that and now it only costs marks, dil and EC).
Zen used to be called cryptic points or c-points for short and both have the same purpose, to be currency you buy with real money and then cna either use it in c-store (nowadays z-store) or you can exchange it for refined dilithium with other players, which is also the reason why folks are saying that you can get anything in the game without dropping real money into it.
Fleet credits were added when fleets (player guilds) became a thing and are only used in guild stores for some top tier equipment (alongside dil and EC, again).
GPL is a meme that you can get by playing an in game gambling game that is just a thinly veiled exchange unit that turns your EC into latinum.
With latinum you can get some cosmetic items and they never bothered adding any more because cryptic couldn't make money with this shit.
Salvage is currently the latest shit and it is used (alongside dilithium) to change your weapons and gears modifiers, which increase per item rarity (which can be upgraded with upgrade tokens which are either given freely few times a year during an event or another, or you can make some with crafting skills or just buy them from the exchange with EC).
Salvage is gained by destroying random loot drops you get every now and then.
Oh and then there's also lobi crystals which you can only gain by opening lock boxes and which are used in separate store of their own for tons of different top tier shit.
Lobi stuff doesnt bind on pickup so it can be sold on in game exchange for EC.

Lifetime subscription costs you right now about 2 to 300 dollars (during sales it drops to about 100 dollars less) and its a leftover from the ancient days when you had either silver account (pay to play in a monthly subscription base) or a gold account where you forked over a large sum of money at the beginning and were able to play forever without any additional costs.

i played this last year when i was off work and had nothing to do and i was actually surprised at how much i enjoyed myself. the ship combat was my favorite part but i really liked how you can customize your crew, your ship and virtually everything you own/carry. i also liked the factions/reputation, although it was a huge grind; i thought it was interesting that they were factions you could just teleport shit to every day to contribute to their war efforts and get rewards from it. the ground combat fucking sucked though. the jewry was pretty strong in it all around and i think it's worst part; randomized lockboxes for ships was a terrible idea and just serves to piss off everyone

Engineer is a good choice, you get fun things such as mines, turrets, and drones in ground combat, as well as an orbital strike of which the damage type and effect depends on your faction choice. Space skills are generally make sure your ship can keep itself together and also buff your own power levels. An engineer in an escort or battleship is pretty effective.

I rock the Defiant Interior as I used to fly a refit fleet-defiant. This is how all the ship interiors should look to be honest, the scale is perfect and everything feels alive. i think the common consensus is no matter what class your are the only thing that matters is DPS.
you can be tanky dps by virtue of your engineer abilities and maybe flying a cruiser or science ship instead of an escort but all ship components must serve once purpose, DPS. if you have anything on there that improves survivability you are doing it wrong, you can survive by destroying the enemy with DPS.

all the grinding/paying money just means you can run the same 4 queue's over and over again, this time with a $100 worth of ship and equipment, and get nothing for it, because the queue's don't give you anything of value, and pvp is non-existent.
the only end-game is competing on some 3rd party site where they run log parsers to see who has the highest dps.

I played years ago. It was a mixed bag for me. Ground combat was pretty much everything I remember from other MMOs, but the space combat was pretty damn fun if a fair bit too easy. The bridge officer stuff was pretty cool they really should not have shoved that one Romulan on you and the misc officers adding smaller benefits was nice as well, even if it was basically just a time waster while you traveled.
I might pick it up again one day.

i generally agree but the biggest problem with STO isn't the p2w / cashshop / lockbox scams, it's that there is no end game. even if you do sink a grand into this game, there is nothing to do, nothing to win with your new shit. it's not pay to win, it's pay and still get nothing.

You get dil from doing just about anything now, missions reward the stuff, duty officer assignments reward the stuff, you can just play a minigame daily for the stuff, you don't have to pay a cent for the battlezones that reward the stuff in fuckloads, there is no paywall to do PvE queues which often have events to get 50k of the fucking stuff. You can do all PvE content from beginning to 65 in a T5 ship, the PvP is 100% fucking dead and has no reward for doing it.
