A lot of meleefags, Brawlfags, and Tr4shfags argue with each other over which game is better, but I feel like N64 Smash gets criminally overlooked. Of course, it's not as varied and polished as its sequels (hell, characters don't even have a side b), but it's still very much a fun game in its own right. Board the platforms is great, the sound effects (especially when hitting opponents) sounds raw and awesome, and the music is top notch. Not to mention that this game has a fantastic commercial and wonderful intro and ending cutscenes.

Smash64 has the best physics out of all of them. Project M came close, and from what I played of Smash4, it had okay physics too. Melee was far too heavy and brawl was far too floaty. Smash64 has the best incarnation of Link with the best boomerang. It's a shame they nerfed it into the ground with all subsequent releases.

I also play this with my siblings whenever we get together. I main Link, my brother mains Fox, and my sister mains Kirby. Thankfully in high school, I found a really good friend who mains Pikachu to round out our 4. Even though Pikachu is pretty busted with his aerials, recovery time, and warp, the game is pretty balanced if you are good. Me and that Pikachu put hours and hours a day against each other after school just to train and get better. Even though Link is considered low tier and Pikachu is considered the best tier, with the skill and training we've aquired, the game actually shows itsself to be incredibly well balanced.

I don't mind smash being competitive and all. The real issue is the different engines and focuses of different games. Melee had a more competitive aspect to it, Brawl was more focused on casuals. Smash 4 tried to find a balance between the two, but with mixed results.
The situation is almost like a similar situation with the sonic franchise. Fans all cling to a different game play style and argue that theirs is better.

I think the reason /v/ fags hate smash 64 is, aside from being normalfags from cuckchan, is the fact that some of you are far too jaded. Smash 64 may have some trash aspects about it, but it was fucking fun as a coop back when people didnt have multiplayer online shit fests like fortnite. It was fun sitting downstairs with friends or even brothers (and a few sister fags out there im sure) and just getting worked up over that last life and who was going to win. But then everyone started to grow up and things changed, your friends went to college and probably work now, brothers are now fathers with children who cant play, and sisfags are watching their beloved sisters going into marriages. And anon is left behind with a lot of memories of times he will never relive and so the only thing left is for him to either play alone against bots or hop onto 8/v/ and call everyone who might still have a little fun with the game faggots cause he cant have fun.

N64 Smash really did have a more "cartoony' feel to it. Little things like whenever a character got electrocuted would show their skeletons.
Mained Kirby, while my brother would be Pikachu (or DK just to spam that carrying throw on the walk off Mushroom Kingdom stage). Probably one of the funniest things about that stage is that the POW Block can be activated if you are thrown into it, unintentionally screwing over the person who threw you. Favorite stage was Saffron City and usually played with the item set of Pokeballs, Bob-ombs and Motion Sensing Bombs for good explosive battles.

Fuck yeah. Also, I really dislike the new trend with Nu-tendo of not having a single, coherent art style for Smash. Melee looked fantastic because you could put characters from extreme opposite series, like Donkey Kong next to Captain Falcon or Roy next to Mr. Game & Watch and they'd still look like they came from at least a similar place, Brawl kind of overdid it with the bleaker tones but 4 onward made everyone look disgustingly plastic like. It's not just the lighting, it's the textures and even some of the player models.
