Believe it or not, there are some people who play Arma because they want a military simulator, not DayZ or some asinine survival mod. DayZ killed the Arma community.

To be fair, Bohemia Simulations is rather distant from Bohemia Interactive (the former being Aussies while the later being Czechs), though I don't really understand why BISim doesn't share anything with BI. OFP wasn't originally intended as a training sim for the military, so they juiced it up in late 2001 and sold it for the USMC and other armed forces, including (((IDF))), later on. They liked it, so the later iterations of VBS were based on their respective Arma games and are still sold to military and law enforcement organizations. In the early years of VBS, there were quite expensive Personal Licenses for regular people. VBS1 with all addons cost hundreds of bucks and to this day it's next to impossible to pirate the addons. Hell, VBS1 getting leaked AND cracked was a miracle, considering that a USB security dongle is needed to launch any of the VBS games. As far as I know, starting from VBS2 or 2.0, Personal Licenses were stopped from being issued for some reason (piracy, maybe?).

Unless you are talking about multiplayer performance (which was actually about as good as arma 3 is now, arma 2 took a shit-dive), the how much fun each multiplayer mode was depends on the mode and mission itself, as well as the players.
I vividly remember being on the defending team in an assault scenario and actually fucking losing because the guy who was supposed to be our AT gunner had shit aim, and once he bought a farm it was up to me to take out the tanks that were already upon us.

RIFM was good times, there were a few other Oceania groups but they were all full of spergs and tryhards or full blown milsim larp with ranks and salutes. The dudes that ran RIFM were super observant of the line between fun but serious coop and faggot army larping. People weren't allowed to have ranks, not even in their usernames, everyone was subject to the same rules and ethos. The ethos being that you play and conduct yourself for the benefit of your pals, and do your best to put other members before yourself. A lot of this stuff is probably why it was the au/nz king, we even had some night shift yanks play but only one or two ever survived the banter.
Roles were rotated on a mission by mission basis but a lot of the experienced guys would stick to leadership and everyone pitched in with roles they were good at. So while there was never any role assignment you had the boys who were good at leading, flying, logistics or overall command usually doing it, and they were more than happy to step aside to show someone new how to do it or let them prove themsleves. There was even a dedicated buddy system to try and help people understand roles and make friends.
i'll miss it, even on its deathbed it was miles better than the next biggest group
