It is also hard to balance a game around it. If you have stompy bots, then you need to figure out how to make combat actually interesting instead of just a power trip, as well as interesting enemies to match the stompy bot. If you have more mobile mechs, then you need to get it right so it still feels like the combat has weight or else the mech part is pointless. People's tastes are similar, some people will refuse to look at something that isn't a walking tank game, and others refuse to look at walking tank games.

It is a hard genre to make a deal breaker. Probably the ones that covered the widest variety of tastes are the Armored Core games, and Metal Warriors. Granted, Armored Core tended to have a preference for faster mechs, and even the tanks had some mobility.

I pirated it after seeing the recommendation a few mech threads back. Personally I think it's great fun and after sinking a few hours into it I actually bought it.

Pros:

- Big selection of vehicles that are very different (big and slow with huge weapons or small and fast with tiny health or anything inbetween)

- decent selection of weapons

- amazing soundtrack

- interesting setting, lore and story-telling

- i like building custom shit in freelance mode

- challenge level of the game is up to you for the most part, as you get different loadouts with varying power for the missions

Cons:

- there's not a ton of variation of the objectives (especially in freelance mode) e.g. theres like 3 types of main objectives and 3 sub objectives

- in the pirated version my controller didnt work properly

- some of the special equipment is pretty useless while others are super strong

- only 4 types of special equipment

Having said all that I have never played another mech game, so I can't really compare it there. My advice would be to pirate it and have fun.

Brigador is impressive at first but it follows the same model as roguelites – repetitive grind in random maps for "infinite" replay value. With Brigador, you don't even get randomly generated maps, just random enemy placement in maybe like a dozen maps, so it gets old really fast. It has some campaign missions but they're hit and miss and don't last long.

If you're interested in top down mech games in general, I highly recommend MechCommander Gold. It's a real time tactics game so you don't get direct control like you do in Brigador. Its challenging and complex mission designs with lots of surprises combined with its style of resource management (mech and pilot damage carries over from mission to mission, your main resource are salvaged weapons and mechs from fallen enemies) creates a really tense experience where you constantly have to weigh risk versus reward. Beating a difficult mission with minimal losses and salvaging a prized enemy mech are some of the most satisfying experiences I've had in any game.

Brigador's camera might be isometric-overhead but the aiming is a reaction between your cursor and the mech and where you actually are shooting is marked by the lines, giving it a bit more depth than just a top-down shooter. The assets seem to be 3d-models flattened and textured to look like sprites, correct me if I'm wrong, and its an interesting style of art that is more than just taking a model and making sprites out of still frames.

Normalfags want to see someone be cool, not pilot or command something cool. Armor straddles the line, but they do still recognize it as being close enough to count as being an extension of the cool guy.They'll have a commander, a base of operations, or military on the side, but those are to ignore, leave, and fill sidelines respectively.

The only exception is cars, because they also have cars.
