Hello /v/, I was hoping someone here could give me some advice on buying a gaming laptop.
Since I know that the NVidia GTX 1060 graphics cards are already a bit outdated, I'm thinking about getting one with a 1070, but how long will it be before those are outdated too? 3 years? Less? Should I wait the 1080 ones to drop in price?

That's why I'm asking why a gayming laptop.
There's no recent games that are worth getting, especially on a laptop. You can expect to run everything on the lowest settings and still get 15fps at best. So you could aim for something like a Thinkpad and enjoy old games with emulation instead.
What's your wallet got to offer right now to start with?

As someone who used to have a gaming laptop, I would really advise against it. You would be better off getting something functional for school and emulating what you can on it while building up a backlog list for when you can make a full desktop. Or getting some cheap console. I know the appeal of a gaming laptop but it really isn't that great, and far more expensive than it is worth.

Are you saying you can play games like Cuphead just fine on a 1060 or 1050 graphics card? I have a PS4 already so it's mostly about Xbox One/PC exclusive games for me.

Pretty much what ever you get that has good stats now should be able to run any game you get so long as you avoid retarded shit like 8K+ resolutions and 480 FPS+, since diminishing returns are a mean bitch.

PC hardware only gets outdated when it can no longer do the things it could when it came out. For example if you bought a GTX 780 or an R9 290 back in 2013, they aren't outdated, because just like back then, then can to this date play every game on max settings and achieve 60fps locked with the exception of a few trash unoptimizied games that nobody cares about. If these cards couldn't do that anymore, then and only then would they be outdated.
Your 1060 is not outdated because there isn't a single game in the planet that it cannot run on max settings with 60fps at 1920x1080 res. Do not be a retard who blows his money on new hardware just because the godawful shills such as Linus tell you to. They have basically gimped all the cards on that list.
Since AMD has completely abandoned the GPU market all those cards are gimped down a tier.
For Example the 2080 would have been the 2070 as it has only 23 cores due to a few being disabled. The 2080 ti will probably be what the 2080 would have been if Nvidia had real competition.
Also, the RT in RTX stands for Ray Tracing which is basically just more "cinematic gameplay" bull crap that will change nothing in terms of geometric detail, and will be stuffed into games through Gameworks.
If AMD only had some cards that were a just bit better than what they have now I would buy them. Hopefully the Crypto fags will fizzle out by then so i can afford that card when it comes out.
AMD is absolutely killing it in CPU's right now though, so maybe their success in that can let them break out into the GPU market to the point where AMD has a good enough market share that devs will stay away from that Gameworks crap.

Nice design.
Just go for Win7, anything above it is a mess. You should get around the problem of some USB ports not working by manual driver installation.
Or better yet, search the internet for Linux+Wine+GPU passthrough.

Gay-Man Laptop main here
The thing is that while it is possible to get a gaming laptop that can match a lot of mid and even high end gaming desktops, you will be paying significantly more for the performance vs desktop, we're talking hundreds of dollars more. I shelled out for a gaming laptop because I wanted performance but I also did not have enough space for a full sized desktop so I had to compromise. Gaming laptops are more convenient than desktops, but not as convenient as non-gaming "ultrabooks". With a gaming laptop you will always be making compromises, so they're not for everyone. I would recommend a desktop any day unless you're like me and just don't have the space for it.
Also ignore the retards here, hardware improvements have gotten so fucking stagnant that a gaming laptop you get today will easily last you the next 5 years or more for AAA titles. AMDs only course of action to get the industry out of stagnation was more cores and even still their single core/IPC is still not quite on the level of Intel. Fucking hell, no computer architecture has an IPC that can even match Intel/x64 so in a sense the entire industry is starting to stagnate.

External GPUs can work, but you'll have lower bandwidth being a bottleneck. You'll get a ~20% performance drop. I personally think it's wasteful. You'll need a laptop and eGPU enclosure with Thunderbolt 3 support

A GTX 1080 also costs like twice as much as a GTX 1060 or an RX 580, so it's a choice between maxing out graphics, and more affordable, more frequent upgrades (unless you're fine with lowering graphics).
>My pc one at 2ghz core
<muh GHz
That's meaningless. A Jewtel 2nd gen i3 beats an AMD Phenom II processor in single-core performance despite having lower frequency. You need to look at the processor's generation and segment (low-end, middle-end, high-end). That, combined with benchmarks, is ironically and sadly the best way to compare hardware (barring outliers). Also Pentiums and especially Celerons a shit (castrated CPU with less cache, less RAM banks, etc.).

That's because of growing retarded, overbloated system requirements (W10 requires 2 GB of RAM just to run and thrashes your HDD constantly), and the unnecessary demand for moar polygons and (((4K))) and (((120 Hz))) (games keep rendering logic and game logic separate) to justify the purchase of newer GPUs.

No. Especially not if you play games with it. Even if it sits mostly in the same place, the parts are lower quality, the card will perform 25% worse minimum than the same series desktop card, and the whole thing will have heat problems, slowly fall apart, and more than likely be designed poorly on purpose to make it easy to break / hard to repair. The last laptop someone asked me to fix would literally crack the case if you tried to open it, and had the parts mounted to the underside of the keyboard instead of sitting more securely on the bottom of the case like older laptops. These things break within 2 years under any serious use besides using it as a work tool.
