I honestly wonder whether or not the tank controls actually are a huge source of the horror - limiting your abilities to intervene in the given situation while also giving you the feeling that you do not so much control an avatar rather than trying to protect a third-party character from damage.

What about a minimalistic game where you have no NPCS? No enemies? Just your character walking through the streets of an abandoned city, going through house to house only to find all of them empty. But the further you progress, the more apparent it becomes that you aren't alone. There are little changes. A pack of cigarettes on a table that was previously closed now is open and missing a few cigs. Doors that previously were locked are unlocked - more importantly, doors that you yourself closed behind you suddenly are left wide open.
And every now and then, you can hear footsteps or a door being closed somewhere around you.

Silent Hill 2's graphics have aged rather poorly (in my opinion) compared to the other games in the series. I picked up the xbox version thinking it would have decent enough visuals as a lot of OG xbox games have age fairly well. but the jagged 480p graphics and jarring CGI cutscene transitions to the in game cutscenes really bothers me (I'm glad they stopped doing that past SH2). So I decided to go back and check in on the progress to fix the broken PC version. the progress is amazing, with all the current patches applied the game looks and and sounds superior to any of the console version. it also (might) play a bit better too. i'm trying the 1080p60fps mode and so far it rocks. (all other versions are locked at 30fps). only thing left for me is to adjust the controls a bit and i'll be able to start my perfect playthrough. (I haven't play or beat the game since it came out in 2001) it looks like the PC version of 3 and 4 have also been fairly updated so i'm hoping to do the same with them later. i'd also like to give SH5 and SH6 (downpour) a shot (I know they both have bad reputations) just for my own sense of completion.

4 was on to something. The feeling of being in a home should be a sanctuary to most people, it's a place to relax and kick the shoes off. Then you get shit like ghosts ripping themselves out of the wall, you're locked from the inside and out and oh-a walled off section of your own apartment was used for some cultists ceremonial suicide and it's mummified now.
The problem 4 had was that it's inventory management sucked compared to the others, it was tedious to backtrack through this entire graveyard so that this non-obvious chocolate milk had to be given to this one guy for a gardening spade with some writing on it.

Marrow is a metroidvania-esque thing. But the thing is, it is very hard on a fuck you level.
Theres no map and you need to do backtracking to get all your powerups.
Fuck, i dropped it after the boss at Stuland Manor and theres only like 1 full playthrough on YT.
Plot is like, some kid have to find 14 orphans that went missing in a mountain, and finds some sort of underground/sunken city where some fucks worship some otherwordly being.
Exoder is just pure platforming with checkpoints and a boss at the end of each level. Its seems to be plot related to Marrow, but its very fucking hard

As someone who sat through the dogshit that was HOME and the utter waste of time that was Alchemilla, no. Get the fuck out of here with that shit. It doesn't matter how much stuff you move in the environment, how many fast moving shadows you hide near a windowsill, or how many times you feel like writing my name, favorite 2hu, and social security number on the wall with blood, the moment the player realizes that there is no actual monster and that he is no actual danger of dying, is the moment that the game stops being scary and becomes just a faggy walking simulator splashed with blood. Paranoia is good for building tension, but tension with no payoff just makes me feel like I wasted my fucking time. Why would I be paranoid if I know for a fact that the oogly woogly man is never going to fucking come for me? I might have been scared the first few times someone banged on a door or knocked something over, but after the seventh fucking time it happens and nothing shows up, I'm just either annoyed by the loud noise or relieved because the noise tells me I'm actually making progress. As much as I despise Amnesia and it's wannabes' "hide in a closet until the monster decides to fuck off unless its AI bugs out in which case you can kindly eat shit" gameplay, at least they actually give you a monster to run away from. There's a difference between a horror game being slow-paced and being literally fucking nothing. For reference: you wanna know a game that does exactly that? A game that only has le spuky atmosFEAR xDDD and occasionally makes you feel like ZOMG IM NOT ALONE DDDD:? Gone Home Remember, that pile of shit was marketed as a horror game. Only when you actually """played""" it did you realize it was nothing but a romp through some faggot millenial's house but with all the lights turned off.

Also, I talked about Detention the last thread that was all about capcom because OP had the bright idea of making the first thumbnail about a REmake 2 official statement. I've been thinking about an idea for a horror game that doesn't actually play like one. It would be something like a GTA clone, but the more you play, creepy and unnerving shit starts happening. Things like walking by pedestrians and having their face distort into deformed nightmares looking directly into the center of the 3rd person camera, so it's like they're looking directly at you. There would be some 4th wall breaking and maybe things culminating in some kind of "ghost in the machine" type stuff. Non of it would be relevant to the plot or gameplay, it wpuld just be there to freak people out because it's not expected.

You can choose 4 characters to start as(Knight, Merc, Hunter and Necromancer), and theres a heavy luck based mechanic (heads or tails to decide if you get good loot, find useful spells, or simply get attacked when you try to sleep.
The story seems to be about you returning from some sort of war and finding this structure in the middle of nowhere. Being low on supplies you decide to explore and find fucked up shit.
The art is kinda nice and it has a very gloomy vibe, also, even the starting enemies can fuck you up, you can choose to hack their limbs or head, but sometimes thats not enough to kill em.

i had a similar experience with a russian san andreas mod that was supposed to add zombies, turn the city into a mess with barricades, weapons, wrecked cars and fire everywhere and have its own set of missions where you could choose a faction (iirc military, scavengers/bandits and survivors) or just survive in the wild, effectively having 4 different storylines, but i could never get it to work right since it was just a zip file that you had to unpack on top of the vanilla game and run with a few cleo scripts to load animations properly.
First time i launched it it didn't even boot, then i unzipped it into a folder first and moved the contents, this time it booted with a different splash screen and i was able to load the new city, but zombies didn't spawn, however there were random civilians and even soldiers on the street running around as if something were chasing them (you can replicate this in the vanilla game with the "riot" cheat, or just by advancing the storyline to the mission where tempenny gets away with everything and the whole city riots), cars spawned in their normal places, you could still get fucked up by kamikaze planes if you walked around the mountains, weapon spawns were completely removed (or just very well hidden) and the water was gone, 20 game reinstalls and mod redownloads later i just messed around with a bike on the empty oceans for a bit and then uninstalled that shit forever.

If you made the eventual victory in the game either based on becoming famous enough, or getting enough proof of the paranormal to get it officially recognized. Theoretically never needing to even confront the crazy shit, but having it there as a kind of option the player could use to get a huge boost as a risk/reward trap.

Pathologic has the stupidest fucking story I've ever seen in my entire life. The ending made me feel like a fucking moron for sticking with the slog that was the gameplay for as long as I did. The game isn't hard in the slightest, they just don't explain shit to you in a way that makes any sense. Once you actually know how to play the fucker ending the game with more ammo than serious sam, more food than you could ever need, more meds than you could consume in one lifetime, and a gorillion dollars is piss easy. It's not hard, just obtuse.
Sandbox plague. Go fuck yourself, you fucking hacks. That's fucking stupid. It's like they got to the end of it and just threw their hands up and said "was it a real medical malady or something more spiritual or supernatural? Who gives a shit, the whole game is a joke!"
It's also the way I know that 99 percent of the game's dicksuckers have never actually beaten the game. The theatricality themes? Pointless, don't pay off nor matter virtually at all. The le epic meat themes? Doesn't fucking matter, you're a plaything in a sandbox.
And the best part? Replay the game again after knowing the twist at the end. You won't see anything hinting at it and it the events preceeding it still dont' make sense. Those are the best kinds of plot twists, ones that when you know what they are and re-do the media the twist is in, they still make no sense and nothing really foreshadows them at all.
Ice Pick Lodge made Pathobullshit, The Void which is one of my favorite games for sheer wierd/fun factor alone, though the ending was similarly infuriatingly shitty though at least I had fun getting there, Cargo AKA "Tutorials: The video game", a game where the game tells you how to play it and then promptly ends, and Knock Knock, AKA "geniune scares in service of absolutely dick diddly shit nothing". So no, there is a zero fucking percent chance of Pathologic 2 being any good whatsoever. It'll be more stupid bullshit "look how smart and deep we are maaaaan" bullshit with no real plot to speak of and even more piss-poor gameplay, this time on the fucking Unity engine that only vaguely even works. I can't wait.
And I am going to get to play it, as my wife donated money to their kickstarter back when she only knew of the game through that stupid ass rock paper shitgun article that the author clearly hadn't beaten the game before writing either and before we actually played it ourselves. Protip to the faggot that wrote that: If you traded your revolver in for food, the game will become quite literally unwinnable after a certain point because you need to gun down a few dudes to beat it on the Bachelor's scenario. If you're ever at the point where you're trading your revolver in for food, you're doing it wrong and need to fuck around with the game's horribly balanced mechanics and absurdly obtuse trading system until you get out of that spot. You have piss poor long term planning skills if you're ever in a position where you have to sell any weapons in exchange for anything else.
Fuck Pathologic. Fucking sandbox plague. Give me a fucking break. Never beat the devotress scenario, maybe it's great, wouldn't know, just got the bachlor and the haruspicus done and even then I only did the second one to see if the "story" would make more sense knowing how it would end ahead of time. it doesn't.
Pathologic is shit and that stupid fucking article conned so many people into thinking there is so much more going on in it than there is.

It's about a painter whose wife and daughter died. He slowly went crazy to the point he painted only dark and creepy shit so his career went down the shitter. The game is his attempt at making a masterpiece again, and it's pretty clear from the outset he's painting using his wife's remains.
It's not too spoopy, but what it offers is great surreal visuals and tricks in the environment, which alone makes it far superior to other walking sims. It's a fun carnival ride, essentially.
>>15342332
The twist at the end only invalidates the story because you want it to. Just because it's framed as a story within a story doesn't make all the characters null and void and that's the entire point of the true ending. Who the fuck cares if it's just a play, or two kids playing at a funeral, if all the characters in the town interact with themselves in complex ways and create a whole unique creation myth? Do you blow a fuse because your favorite book was just some guy making shit up and putting it to paper? That's exactly what you're throwing a tantrum about.

Maybe the Evil Within, in a way. The story is first framed as your classical supernatural creepy, but it turns out it's all VR with an autistic dude as dungeon master. I found it completely undermined the whole thing, and that's why I liked Evil Within 2 much better - it starts with the virtual environment right away and actually works it to the fullest of its potential, rather than making the premise of the game a bait and switch because the writer saw The Sixth Sense once.

Looks like a lovechild between Dead Space and Resident Evil (then again, they apparently have the guys from the Resident Evil fangame on board, so there goes the surprise).
The guys being some random Italians who banded together for a studio might be neat - large corporate developers have a tendencies to produce "predictable" scares, whereas indie devs basically are wildcards because they have no big publisher breathing down their neck.
Needless to say, this can go either way - for all their creativity, such small studios have a tendency to turn up belly-up in the water. What happened to ROUTINE again?

I think tank controls chiefly came from the fixed camera perspective. Which is something survival horror games should give another try, imho. I think there's a specific psychological effect tied to them because the way you look at the player character makes him or her look like an actual character and not just a player avatar.
Shit, wasn't there a horror game where you had to guide some poor sods through a nightmare house while you could only see them via security cameras? Had voice controls, IIRC.

Not exactly a horror game, but I played the Dead Money DLC for Fallout New Vegas for the first time recently and it's one of those cases where a non-horror game has great horror segments.
The things that really stuck with me afterwards are the unanswered questions. New Vegas loves to answer its questions if you know where to look, but Dead Money is one of the few areas where the answers just don't exist, or even raise other questions.
>The origin of the Ghost People is explained (people locked inside faulty environmental suits and mutated beyond comprehension) but you never learn why they prefer to bring living victims into the Cloud instead of killing them, or what they do to their victims
>The origin of the holograms is explained, but it's never explained why certain holograms will repeat their dying words over and over for eternity
>It's completely unexplained as to how or why certain people who die in the Sierra Madre will have a hologram created in their image
The last two points are obviously supposed to give off some heavy imagery of ghosts, but the lack of explanation despite knowing the origins of the hologram projectors makes it somewhat more eerie. It can't just be chalked up to the supernatural.
It was some good stuff. If you like New Vegas but never played Dead Money, or if you're desperate for a good horror game to play, I'd strongly suggest checking it out.

It's revealed that all the horror shit you've been experiencing were hallucinations caused by a device being run by the (fairly obvious) twist villain and the obligatory alma clone has actually been trying to guide you to his location. That actually seemed pretty cool. Exploration seemed nice, but enemy AI was kinda dumb. I like how you could choose to just run away from a bunch of shit (probably for good reason). My only concern was that the player missed like 90% of those coin flips, which would make for an infuriating experience.

It's less subtle, certainly, and if you're more into simple, understated drama I get why you'd prefer the story of the first. But if you don't see 2 was a straight upgrade gameplay wise, and that its story is a wild fucking ride that uses the meta angle perfectly, you're a right fucking git.

Stasis is disturbing, it's also probably the most bleak game I have ever played. It's one of those games where you actually feel kinda sad and empty when you finish it.

Sometimes you get a pretty good one like this but Ito's work is usually built on strong gross-out or unnerving imagery with a great premise that always ends in the most retarded fashion imaginable.

Just don't, if you don't show some restraint you will end up forgetting what was good in the first place.

You do realize this is communist propaganda, right? Taiwan is the piece of China that refused Mao's revolution: depicting it as a fascist state is what the chinese do.

Always found it weird the jump from Resident Evil style "you're alone, outnumbered and trapped in a spooky house" to gunning it through monsters with some SWAT buddies.

Taiwan during the martial law period was ruled by the Kuomintang. If you're a mongrel that skims historical articles you're just going to see it opposed the communist party, but you'll miss the rather critical fact that it was initially aligned with the communist party. The taiwan martial law was nothing but fringe communists wanting their own little safe space.
