X3 is delicious autism but you probably would only care about the most recent release of it. The plot's always garbage, it generally ruins the trading game by dishing out free gibs, and the gibs have gotten more ridiculous over the years.

X would basically get a few new features, a new plot, then they re-release it as a new game. Since the plot is always a total loss there's not much point in playing ones before Albion Prelude.

Ah, then get it. Just be aware that in an attempt to attract normalfags they made station missions give ridiculous rewards, the "plot" showers you with stuff, and they bundled easymode player-made mods like the MK3 trader (reddit complained that the game was too hard). I think it's CORRUPTION of the core sandbox game. You might want to consider avoiding some of those things in a playthrough, or in a future playthrough.

Don't listen to the retard saying the plot is garbage. The plot in X games is the tutorial. In fact, the expansion packs like Terran Conflict and Albion Prelude assumes you know what you're doing so it only has a refresher course. A lot of players drop the game after being overwhelmed by the game because they followed that advice.

MK3 plays the game for you and is free money - why build stations and set up trade routes when you can just make an army of them? It was originally a player-made mod and it shows.

Gameplay-wise the game was at its best in X2. Engine-wise, X3.

The combat's pretty good as far as space games go, except for Rebirth. For larger battles where/if you're commanding a fleet though you'll need to do them "OOS" (out of sector) as if you're in the same sector all the ships have physics and they'll smash into each other.

Because one wants to? I mean you're complaining about MK3 when the Stock Exchange exists. Any brainlet can just dump money into that and earn millions in the first 20 minutes of the game. It's a sandbox game, do whatever you can/want. Min-maxing in these games is an exercise in boredom.

It wasn't as sandboxy until they decided they wanted the reddit audience.

You used to have to trade/fight/jew your way up, and there were multiple tiers to the economy you'd go through along the way. There was a sense of progression. That's gone now and it's not better for it. If you didn't play X2 you're unaware of what was lost. Rebirth was just a natural progression those not new to the series saw coming.

A lot of what's in X3 today will just feel confusing to a new player - like, why are there all these ships to choose from when none compare to the godly ones you were handed for doing almost nothing? Why is the balance so comically bad with some ships like the springblossom? What's the point of building a station complex when a single mission pays 100x as much as it would make in an entire day? Why is there so much stuff about trading when it doesn't seem like you're meant to be trading or ever really need to? What's the point of these ship trade extensions that run routes when there's a MK3 that does it all? Why would I need to buy ships to defend a path when my trade ships have jumpdrives? Why are sectors so safe yet there's all this stuff about patrolling in the UI? etc..

They responded to complaints about difficulty and inaccessibility not by rebalancing the content, but by short-circuiting it with gibs. The gameplay loops now exist in a vestigial manner and stick out enough that I think an astute player might start wondering why it looks like a different game lies beneath the skin.

But yeah, it's still fun, it's just lost so much in its attempt to broaden the audience.

I don't think I would play vanilla much before jumping into the mod after learning gameplay basics. Vanilla ship and campaign balance being terrible shouldn't be a problem.

I played the star wars mod recently. It's pretty much a reskin of Albion prelude only with only different ships and weapons and is very obliviously a work in progress.

Empire controls a couple sectors and fight alongside Terrans. Alliance are reskined Argon. Mandalorians are reskined Split, etc. It's Albion prelude with a light star wars coat of paint with broken story missions. The replaced ships have a pretty nice variety and are well modelled but it does little to make you believe that you're playing in a star wars galaxy.

I absolutely recommend X-Tended if you want a fantastic big mod to use.

there's a mod that fixes this. it's kind of cheaty, ships just bounce off the enemy when they collide, same with the enemies ships though. it makes large battles in-sector actually playable.

I've tried to get into this game 3-4 times and I just can't seem to get started. It seems like the kind of game that would be fun once you know what you're doing but I haven't been able to get to that point.

Every time they do a new game, people who've been playing the older games always complain. It's half the reason majority of the content comes from modders. That's only the case for main line story, if you play as Terran Commander.

Terran Commander gets "Operation:Loose Ends" instead.

Been doing basic trading runs: Nobody seems to have energy cells and there's a solar plant with them cheap the next sector over. That gets me about 7 credits a unit and I can fit 2277 units but it takes a while and there's nothing to bring to that sector. Looking at ship prices it doesn't look like I'd be upgrading or adding to a fleet anytime soon.

How do I earn money quicker? I haven't even seen an enemy that wasn't instantly blasted by NPCs, though I haven't gone very far.

How do I earn money early game? I did some trade runs but I'm nowhere near adding a new ship.

Do non military missions. As you do them you rating rises and mission rewards rises too. In the end you can score 3-5 millions cr per mission.

Try trading small number of illegal goods. They give large sum of money when you manage to sell them.

Just search for "get my ship back" (not stolen ones) and "buy used ship" (don't buy ones which have more than 75% hull left, unless you really want/need these) missions.

Then don't give it back and sell it at local shipyard.

You can get ~50.000 Cr with just M5 ship, if you repair it. Be aware of damage to rep for doing this.

In X2, mk3 traders were a player mod and were later bundled in the optional "bonus pack" which was full of super unbalanced bullshit like the spacefly turbo boost. In X3 it became part of the base game.

It's still a sandbox, arguably more of one since there's no point to anything, nothing to really achieve, and nothing feels rewarding. You really have to try hard to make your own fun out of the pieces you're given.
