Public service announcement that the new Zachtronics game, Exapunks, released a couple hours ago. This was a surprise to me since I believe it was supposed to release in about two weeks, but it's there. As is typical for Zachtronics it's in EA first, so put it on your radar to check out in a few months if you don't want to support that model.

It's yet another coding-based puzzle game, but isn't based in assembly this time, and supposedly doesn't have strict space requirements for your code. I've had the limited edition sitting on my desk for a week now but haven't read too much into the zine to see what it's like mechanically.

Hello shill-kun! Zachtronics games are usually good, so I'll give you the extremely rare benefit of a doubt and take a look…

>Only on Steam

It's shit. GoG has early access games so you got less of an excuse.

9f2946  No.15277136

Glancing through the zine it reminds me of God Is A Cube (which still isn't out yet), but GIAC was inspired by Zachtronics anyway. There are small bots which are individually programmed to run certain instruction loops in an isometric field.

Yeah, supposedly there's a sandbox where you hack a game development toolkit and program your own stereoscopic 3D games, the limited edition came with a pair of 3D glasses for it.

So far it's just tutorializing but it seems like this might be the first Zach game that isn't based around looping instructions, you can destruct each EXA with a "halt" command as soon as it's done what it's supposed to do

Ok, with the fourth and final tutorial it's starting to open up and introduce loops and conditionals. Sort of wish the introduction had been as straightforward as TIS-100 but it seems like this has more going on mechanically, enough to justify a tutorial

I've only had the opportunity to play a little so far, but it's good. I remember Zach said he'd figured the difficulty would be on the same level as Opus Magnum since EXAs don't have line limits the way TIS and Shenzhen do, but I don't think that's going to be the case. Opus also had relatively shallow mechanics and very easy puzzles, and Exa seems like it's set up to eventually turn up the difficulty. I'd still predict that the main challenge / enjoyment is going to be optimization, though, some of the histogram scores are already pretty impressive.

Battle system seems pretty cool, also seems like the sort of thing that's going to be completely ruined by redditors posting "ideal" solutions to every battle arena and other users copypasting them. It's a lot easier than the earlier games. You're given a ton of space for code and with files you have infinite memory you can freely access. I was a little surprised I didn't get a message after completing the game that I was eligible for the patch, since the game's only been out for five days, but the secret envelope had a patch in it anyway. I wouldn't at all agree that the game's significantly easier than TIS or Shenzhen after finishing that last puzzle, most scores on the last few puzzles were flush all the way to the 150 line limit.

That makes sense, it seems like the cycle optimization game is based around running operations in parallel without having EXAs talk over each other. I'm not sure if I want to go back and optimize immediately or if I want to try making a game, though.

The patch just fixed a bug with the M register. Apparently it was unintentional that you could communicate across broken links using the global setting, so every modem puzzle was easier than it was supposed to be. I think the patch introduced a new bug, though, because now two EXAs set to "global" can't communicate if they're in the same node, they have to be separated by at least one link.

There's been a few rather frustrating moments along the way but I've managed to do everything myself so far, for better or worse, without it feeling too easy or too challenging. Speaking strictly in terms of the difficulty of completing the main campaign, I'd say it goes

SpaceChem > Shenzhen I/O > Exapunks > TIS-100 > Infinifactory > Opus Magnum

Since the bonus campaign hasn't been released yet, it's hard to say how far the difficulty will be taken. I remember people were saying Shenzhen was easier than TIS back in the day, and those complaints haven't aged well now that Avalon City is out.

When I say made it to the last puzzle, I mean I haven't completed it yet. Currently working on a reliable method for distributing all over the network without clogging up the nodes entirely. Just trying all four directions and seeing if there's already one there (denoted by a helper EXA that just locally sends a value that won't be received until all spawning is done) doesn't work as the nodes with a #nerv in them get clogged too fast.

I think I should make 4 unique spawn functions that ignore the direction the EXA came from, then I don't need the helper. Gotta go do some IRL shit first though.

My idea for spreading across the network worked, but just naively sending the hostname and nerve value results in timing conflicts.

Solving that, I think I'm going to wound up with a solution that actually has a random execution time for getting the unsorted data to one file (can't test yet since I need to finish the sorting first). Is every test run's RNG deterministic, including the RNG for Copy-M order?

Well TIS had one and Shenzhen had one, so reasonably this one will too. Otherwise throwing in that flyer at the end just seems like very weird flavor text.

>Congratulations, did you eventually find a way to resolve the global miscommunications? It gave me such a headache I eventually made each EXA return to the host server after finding a #NERV, so good job solving it however you did.

I had them all ping the home EXA with a 1, said home EXA waited for a certain amount of time, checked MRD, and added one to x if true. The EXAs at the nerves then waited for a long period of cycles (like ~180 worked) so all of them had done this, and then wait for input on M. Then the home EXA sends a -1, which a random one receives, which then sends both of its values. If a nerv EXA receives a value that isn't -1, it just sends it out again, so eventually it winds up at the home EXA, which saves them to a file

Basically, only sending data when pinged, and through a network that ensures the "packet" arrives at its destination.

I've attached my entire code as an image, obviously don't look at it if you haven't finished the game yet. You wouldn't cheat, right anon?

Well no, I beat it a few days ago. Here are the most current histograms for that puzzle so you can have some idea of how you stacked up. All that time EXAs spent waiting around obviously left you with a higher cycle count than average, but that's still a cool solution to the problem.

>Oh, and just dialing the numbers in the flyer in the modem levels didn't work. Back to thinking, I guess.

For TIS you had to click the image of an eagle in the faux copyright protection screen, and in Shenzhen you had to click a certain character's icon in the last e-mail chain, so the trigger will probably be something like that. If there is one, anyway, but I'm pretty confident there will be.

>Well no, I beat it a few days ago

I didn't mean you, I meant other anons in the thread who might be stuck on the puzzle.

Also, how did you manage to walk back from the nerves in your solution? The only viable way I could think of would be to leave a file with the link ID of the previous node in every node, but that'd be hell to clean up and still might lead to problems if two EXAs try to read that file at the same time. Just using repl the way you'd spread out initially would lead to mass clogging.

>>15318975

>Also, how did you manage to walk back from the nerves in your solution?

Each EXA holds a file with a record of the inverse of each successful link. E.g. if an EXA is sent out to test if there is a 3 link, once it crosses to the other side it'll add -3 to the end of its copy of the previous EXA's list before sending out new replicates to test for new links. It ends up so that each EXA that finds a #NERV has a record of every link necessary to go back to the host server. It's only slow at the moment because I duplicate the parent EXA's file for every replicate it sends out to test the links, so it makes a total of four copies of the file every time it finds a new node, if I want to get down below 1000 cycles I'll have to find a way to speed that up.

Even this setup doesn't completely preclude miscommunication by the way, because there are two or three tests out of the 100 where by pure coincidence two EXAs can end up at the host server at exactly the same cycle, so I had to make it so that there's only one empty space in the host to prevent two of them from getting there at the same time. It's not a great solution, it just works

It's probably the most multiplayer a game like this has had so far although I haven't for the life of me gotten the hacker battles to work with other human players yet

>if the dev isn't a total faggot

Have you never played a game from this developer before? Zach's a pretty cool guy. He doesn't do the writing anyway, Matthew Burns does that

It's coming together now, only a few items left on the checklist before it's fully functional. In the future I'd want to try making something that takes advantage of z-depth, though. The unlimited line space compared to Shenzhen's game and watch sandbox makes everything a lot easier

>claiming that 5'6" is the ideal height for a man because taller people somehow have slower reaction time due to the length of their bodies

I know you manlets have a different perception of the world, but this is the most bizarre reasoning to justify superiority. I'm speaking from experience when saying that things only get better the taller you are, if you're not a lanky beanstalk that is. Only disadvantage is that your dick looks average

Do dead enemies still influence when they progress a line? I already saw one shitty implementation of space invaders on the Redshift, but aside from being way too fast that was one of my main complaints about it.

>z-depth

just make stuff closer to the bottom of the screen pop out more, so it feels like they're coming closer as they march on.

It's about 1700 at the moment, mostly due to @REP loops. I think there's no line cap in the sandbox at all.

>i'm almost halfway done i think with the puzzles and it's becoming an issue of it becoming fucking work lol.

Some of the later puzzles do have a pretty generous line limit, except for the last one. They even patched the U.S. Government puzzle to have a 200 line limit for some unknown reason.

>>15348794

>Do dead enemies still influence when they progress a line?

They do, I have an idea of how to work around that but haven't gotten it working yet, you'd essentially just need invader EXAs to remain as placeholders in the pattern unless they've checked to see if they're the leftmost or rightmost invader.

>I already saw one shitty implementation of space invaders on the Redshift

Well it was honestly just a bad idea for a first game anyway, the screen space and sprite limitations make the games so short it's hard to justify including a scoring or lives system, even at the slowest speed. I had a version that sped up, but it only made the problem worse

before i destroy my brain, is this a bug?

it's on the workhouse mission.

pic related should explain it all. the username i'm looking for doesn't exist in any of the user files. there's one in "secure" that has usernames, but it doesn't work. "NORMALHUMAN" points to file 249 in this, and I got everything working as far as what i'm supposed to do, but it's apparently not the right file, but there's no fucking files that have "NORMALHUMAN" as the username.

What makes something worthy of the "punk" moniker?

I thought the punk part of cyberpunk was the "low life" contrast to the advanced tech.

But then there's steampunk. Where's the "punk" part of everything being shit and life being cheap?

I've also heard "Modem Punk".

When did punk become a thing for rich white girls? Is there a certain date? I thought the original punks were squatters and heroin addicts and shit. I don't really know much about punk music.
