Looked it up, her name is Wild flower and she's a ghost. I haven't played Jade Empire in about 11 years, OP, but from what I remember it's actually pretty good. Over-arching story wasn't anything special, but the motherfucking lore, backstories, and setting gave the game its charm.

Combat was broken, in that it was real easy to break to turn it to easy mode.

Charm was due to just a lack of chinese wuxia/fantasy being present in western games.

Child characters are flat pretty much by definition and so they are either gimmicky or lolicon since it'll be a western dev, the proper term is pedophile :^) bait. I doubt games would benefit much from them.
