Have you ever played a game that just blew you away?

I grew up poor, but one year I got given a gamecube and a copy of Resident Evil 4. The first part of the game where you gain control made my jaw drop, it looked realer than real life to me. I was shaking with excitement and I've never felt so much joyful wonder before or since. I don't like horror media in general, I hate the feeling of stress and fear it gives me but RE4 was so good I couldn't put it down. I've played a handful of games like that in my life, games so amazingly well put together they redefine their genre and make me love something I never liked before.

skyward sword

I thought the motion controls and associated equipment were amazingand really don't give a fuck that it was linear and hand holdy

kingdom hearts 2

I remember when it came out I literally could not stop playing it. It was the first of and one of very few games that did this to me

Mario Galaxy

again, motion controls combined with the level design, scope and soundtrack

Pikmin 3

The way you used the gamepad to micro manage and the way levels were designed blew my mind

Won 101

again, gamepad usage was dope and very innovative

can't think of any other right now, the wii u was a very fun time for me though. I'm not enjoying the switch as much

There are many games that hooked me and i love, but the above literally blew my mind either because the gameplay and design felt very innovative and/or fun to me or some other reason

I began a quantum singularity, however in the unfolding moments of the dawn of time I happened upon a games contraption and a three-dimensional cuboid labelled "Bubsy". In the beginning there was light, wherein I gained the ability to manipulate the universe and my masticatory system devolved leaving me with just a head and a pair of eyes able to appreciate all before me. I was struck with joy for all things and I have never felt so much wonder before or since. I disapprove of homosexuality in general, I hate the feeling of stress and fear it affords God's Creation but Bubsy was so good I couldn't put it down. Tony Hawk 2

We spent thousands of hours on that, and somehow it just kept getting better all the time. The best designed skill level "grinding", couch shit for a score game - High score, after high score, after new trick, after new way to keep combos going. Just another 4 minutes. Fucking amazing game. We loved it.

Next game would be:

Shadow of the colossus

I was a bit too old to actually play it when it was released - too much teenage social bullshit that kept me occupied. But when I finally played it, it was like nothing else. Best game ever.

First game I played was a Spectrum game, that did not blow me away. I'm old as fuck.

I remember a couple, FF7 actually blew my mind with how good it was. I played it for the first time in 2014 and all I knew about the game was that Aeris dies because everyone knows that. I'd never played a FF game before and I thought the whole game was going to be in Midgar, I was so amazed when you go to the open world. Blew my mind since all the Midgar stuff was enough for a full game on it's own.

When I actually got to play Oblivion back in 2006 (after getting a new pc since my current one at the time wasn't good enough to run it) and I didn't know you could fast travel which made the game way more interesting. Actually using the map and planning my trip to quest locations while finding events on the way and getting sidetracked was awesome.

8ed263 No.15234953

>>15234937

Midgar is actually pretty small, although it's the largest area in the game. FF7 does a good job of appearing bigger than it really is, it's a packed journey with a lot of little events that you only see once, helps give each area more context and even the reuse of places like Nibelheim end up being a positive service to the adventure at large, re-experiencing a place from numerous periods and angles allows a lot of context and information to be generated from it.

There's a lot that gets neglected about FF7 that really shouldn't mostly due to some unfortunately pretentious reasons either the fans being too aggressive (although I think this has significantly died down in the past 10 years) or the perception of those fans causing the game to be swept away as "overrated" and the discussion dying there.

>There's a lot that gets neglected about FF7 that really shouldn't

I agree, and the two most important things that people rarely address are:

1. The game is far too easy. Even with the very limited resources of a low-level playthrough running from every random battle, the game struggles to provide genuinely challenging bosses. It does not do enough to encourage the player to take advantage of its strategic depth, and as a result said depth is fairly inconsequential and wasted as a source of replay variety.

2. Too much unskippable exposition between real gameplay chunks.

These are both true, even the hardest optional bosses aren't extraordinarily challenging once you grasp the unique mechanics to each one, like aire tam storm then essentially the greatest difficulty spikes in the game are overcome. I do not really see the poorer difficulty as a major flaw in the game, just a noteworthy one - that is to say not something which cripples the experience.

As far as the cutscenes it's a criticism mixed with its age and also ones expectation. Being an RPG the story is at the forefront. I don't dismiss it, however, it is a valid point but not something I see as game breaking either. I am also talking about praise which the game rightfully deserves in its pacing, mood setting, story beats, setting and world design. It's really good at this stuff but this is often praise ushered away.

Phantom Dust for Xbox blew me away after playing it for the first time last year. I booted this thing up and immediately I couldn't believe it was a sixth gen game. The character designs are a bit fucked but the graphics are incredible.

On top of that it had a very interesting setting, cool deck-building combat mechanics and fucking destructible environments. This is one of those games that had me thinking "how the the hell did I never hear about this?".

Basically, the tagline is absolutely right.
