I'm not sure why arena shooters aren't just called Quake clones, because that's a way more apt description. Literally every arena shooter out there is just some variant on Q3A with slightly different movement techniques, slightly different weapons, and different maps. It shouldn't even be called a genre considering how little new arena shooters try to deviate from the formula. It's downright absurd. Only UT really manages to stand out for several reasons. You'd think that there would have been more interesting takes on the genre by now, but no.

I think arena shooters have fallen into stagnancy due to how they became developed with the multiplayer aspect first (especially 1v1). Originally they were just natural extensions of the game's singleplayer mode. Doom, Quake, Blood, DN3D, Unreal, Half-Life, etc. The weapons and mechanics were all created to be used against the enemies of the singleplayer who have special patterns and properties. The designs of the enemies and levels call for creative and interesting weapons that allow for level designers to get more out of the game, which bleeds over into the multiplayer. Things get stale pretty quick when the intended purpose for all the weapons and mechanics is to be used by one player on an identical player.

The weapons are for the most part identical to Quake (the Vortex when charged deals exactly 80 dmg much like the railgun in CPMA) and even UT (what with you being able to perform Shock Combos with the Electro), the only noticeable difference is the reliance on push force for some of the weapons to give you greater influence on an enemy's momentum, and some alternate fire modes, but for the most part all weapons follow Quake's weapon archetypes. There's no real fundamental differences here.
The movement is near identical, what with the usual bunnyhopping, strafejumping and rocketjumping being present, but instead of rocketjumping you have blasterjumping where you use your starting weapon for jumps, on top of Quake 4's rampjumping also being present. You can do mid-air rocketjumping using the Devastator's mid-air rocket detonation, but beyond that you're mostly left with other variations of rocketjumping with different weapons. I think even Quake Champions has more movement options than Xonotic, albeit locked behind different characters.
Even so, the fundamentals behind not only the weapons and movement, but also item control and map design are still directly derivative from Quake. It really is a Quake clone. Any actual differences are largely minor in the grand scale of things.

Fortnite's pretty good. I consider it an arena shooter because you're more or less shooting each other in a big arena. Vidya's been pretty bad but Fortnite unironically gives me hope, even if people are probably going to shit on me for that. I'll admit to buying the cosmetic DLC from the store in the game. I only spent like 40 or so bucks on it though so it's really no big deal.
