What's the biggest sin a game can commit for you?
For me its purposefully wasting my time near the end of the game. JRPG's are the biggest offender, they'll run out of content 40 hours in but drag the game out for another 20+ hours with shitty, unfinished, unpolished, unfun filler bullshit. Rogue Galaxy is a great game, but the penultimate and final dugeons are just fucking gay. They're way too long and they're boring copypasted roadblocks designed to waste your time in every way possible. I'll take a good 8 hour game over a good 60 hour game where the last 20 hours are unplayable shit any day of the week.

RPG systems in non-RPGs which don't actually utilize the potential of such a systeml to create a large variety of character builds.
Every fucking non-RPG does this nowadays and almost everytime it's an unbalanced mess where your choices are often made irrelevant by the fact that you'll get enough upgrade points towards the end to unlock everything useful but killing all possible build diversity in the process because you always become god in the endgame after being able to spec intomost trees. By extent this also kills replay value because your character will end up the same every playthrough, as opposed to something like in Deus Ex where you have to choose one of two augs with the other being locked off permanently. The only say you really have here is choosing what uograde you want first, because you'll get everything eventually.
Progression often gets fucked because encounters are not designed around you having a certain set of abilities in particular with you being able to start with anything, so you can't challenge the player on specific abilities. This also tends to fuck with the progression of the campaign as all encounters need to be open-ended or formless. Worse is when progression systems are used to cover up the lack of room for player growth in the game, when there isn't much room for the player to exert skill so his numbers have to go up instead.
Balance gets much harder to nail because you now have to account for a pluritude of possibilities instead of a static moveset, on top of leveling making it hard to gauge consistently how many hits an enemy can take before dying.

Games sympathetic to communism have been there for a long time. Makes sense since during the Cold War, shittons of people in higher education sucked up to the USSR and computer programmers were typically more educated on average (higher education being brainwashing isn't new). I pirated Far Cry 5 to see what the fuck this was about and this a perfect example. They literally made the main antagonist untouchable because if you try to stop his madness once and for all, you get a nuke and WW3 and you end up being at his mercy while everyone else died because reasons, the other endings are just to let him do his evil preaching thing, and there's not a single good ending, just different shades of bad. There's been people saying the story is some nod to the book of revelations, but to me it just screams "fuck you".

Hand-holding. I've always seen video games as a means to challenge, test skills, or even be thought-provoking based on your experiences. Games that confine you to restrictive utilities, assist / guide you, and let you do anything with little to no consequences go against the sole foundation of gaming and provides no real value. It's alright in tutorial purposes, but it's still frustrating. It's another when the entire game has an absolute lack of challenge or merit. An ideal tutorial to me would be a room with every type of mechanic you could encounter through the game and nothing to do except fuck around and see how things work, then being able to decide to continue once you think you understand the basics of things.

This shit except with one caveat - I want to see a game that does things in the fashion certain VNs do where going through the game a second time opens up completely different options. On top of that, I'd like to see the game add mechanical depth and difficulty with each iteration instead of having a tutorial, so you have to figure out shit as you go along. One thing I imagined:
Route 1:
>be villager
>village gets btfo in hopeless fight
>do generic shit for guy
>plot twist, guy is end boss
>plot twist, you made him stronger
>gg
Route 2:
>be villager
>new NPC is there
>NPC helps protect village
>learn about end boss from route 1
>suddenly new NPC kidnaps your waifu or something
>becomes new end boss
>gg
That kind of crap. If I knew how to do game design I'd make my dream a reality. I don't really know why a dev hasn't done this sort of thing already - why design a 50 hour game story instead of five 10 hour game stories?

Impossible. I've seen the work produced by one-man indie projects. It would take me at least 25 years to design the game that way I'd want, and that's being conservative with the amount of time it would take to really get into Blender and everything else. By the time the project was finished, it would be so far out of date that it wouldn't matter any more.
The only chance I have is to put together enough shekels doing something else to bank-roll an AA start-up and hire some starving artists to take whatever script I shat out and make it into something serviceable.

There are games that change difficulty in other ways, you probably just didn't notice. For example Killing Floor 2 (as flawed as that game is) will increase difficulty by adding new types of Zeds and giving them new attacks that they can't do on the easier difficulties. Also Fleshpounds spawn enraged.

It saddens me that they don't do something like, change the enemy types that appear or open up more enemy abilities. That's just the most simple form of scripting to control difficulty. Insisting or supposing how I should feel about something, actively taking a character whose moral and philosophical choices have been mine and mine alone up until now, and twisting them to suit their narrative. A character who suddenly refuses the player's choice, for example.
Undertale did this. When playing Undertale during the genocide route the player character will actively do things you don't tell it to do. When Sans tells you to hide behind a lamp, you can't fucking move. When Sans tells you to play along with Papyrus, your character will walk through the traps right up to Papyrus until he feels useless and walks away in defeat, and only then does Sans warn you that if you keep it up, you're going to have a bad time later. Which is true, it unlocks the hardest two fights in the game (Undyne the Undying and Sans). And any form of deviation from this path automatically disqualifies you from it (well, not exactly, you can still fight those two fights). If you don't try to kill the little fish kid, you fail the genocide route.
Games that control you, and your actions, but have otherwise given you free agency up until those points are a real problem for me. This is even worse when you get a storyteller who ever uses the words "you feel" for anything other than a physical sensation, like 'you feel the hair stand up on the back of your neck' is fine, but 'you feel <any emotion here>' is not.

When I bought my bloodbornestation in 2016 there were two flavours I could pick from, uncharted 4 or infinite warfare + the mw remaster, I absolutely loathed both options but uncharted 4 bundle was out of stock so I picked up the cod one. the first thing I did once I got back home was try out my ps4 with infinite warfare knowing I'd never touch it again anyways. the opening was kinda fun but the rest of the game was utterly forgettable and extremely short, so 4 hours later I was pretty much by the end of the game and there was this part where you're supposed to chase one of the space terrorists who is trying to destroy earths defences, the whole thing is pretty much 30 minutes of you killing hundreds of robots and a few mechs while you chase him, and by the end of it when you finally corner him in a building the game takes control away from you AND YOU LOSE IN THE CUTSCENE, HE ALONE AMBUSHES YOU AND TAKES YOUR WEAPONS EVEN THOUGH YOU'VE JUST KILLED A SMALL ARMY ALL BY YOURSELF. of course he doesn't kill you but instead you watch as he destroys earths defences and only after he's done you can finally kill him. that entire sequence was so fucking infuriating, mainly because it makes everything you've done in the story by that point pointless, and all because the writers needed a plot device to justify the space terrorists invading earth again. fucking piece of shit game.
so in short I fucking hate losing in cutscenes.

In a similar vein to >>15229270 ; Weak endings after all the effort going through a long game, making it feel like it wasn't worth it. Best example that comes to mind would be Ys: memories of Celceta. I wasn't a fan of the change of combat that started in Ys 7, but it wasn't the worst. I was more annoyed by the forced cutscenes and areas being blocked off by invisible walls/plot rather than punishing you for going in an area too early and getting killed easily (which was more disappointing that with the party system, Adol dying meant jackshit). It all wraps up in cutscene after cutscene of your party members staying behind to allow you to get to the final boss, which wasn't all that interesting. You get saved by another NPC introduced later as another heart Adol's stole and the game promptly ends there with credits and a scene of him heading out to his next adventure. No resolution for the party members and NPCs you encountered during the game that had lingering plotlines, no idea what happened to the area after the final boss was defeated, No Dogi returning to make the transistion to Ys 3 make sense, nothing. Made me feel all that grinding was for nothing in the end
Another issue I have is when issues like racism (whether it's in a fantasy game or one that's based on reality) are mentioned or are a sub plot of the game, but force you or have the main protagonist you play as to be on one side of the matter rather than allowing you or the character to make your own decisions on the matter based on evidence, facts, and history (it's even worse when they use writer's convenience to the point of exhaustion to make one side the "right" side and one side the "wrong" side instead of allowing nature and truth to take coarse or at the very least show the flaws of both sides).
Any other sins that I would mention already came up.

Reminds me of something in blops 2 that they both nailed and failed at: immersive choices. At one part of the game you are given a sniper rifle and are told to execute a guy with a bag over his head who you are told is the antagonist. He turns out to be your squadmate who was separated from you earlier. The game doesn't take control away from you and you just shoot him like you would in a regular FPS, so 99% of players will just follow orders and shoot him due to not knowing any better. However you can shoot him in the leg instead which saves the character and changes the storyline, however most people wouldn't think to do this since they weren't explicitly told that they could so it rewards you for thinking critically about the situation. Then later in the game you are in a similar situation where you are told to shoot your squadmate by the antagonist, who is right next to him (you're undercover) and a fucking button prompt pops up asking you which one you want to shoot. Why did they bother making a button prompt, it's a SHOOTER. If they didn't break the control scheme then it wouldn't occur to retards that they could use the opportunity to kill the antagonist, and it would have been just as smooth and subtle as the situation described earlier.

I can't believe how much people eat that shit up since stuff like half life 2 and TLOU. Who the fuck thought standing in a room watching NPCs talk was a good means for exposition? Then some assbone said "what if you had to hold forward the whole time some NPC talked" and everyone sucked his fucking dick
>For me its purposefully wasting my time near the end of the game.
padding is frustrating too, there's a lot of games i'd be more willing to replay if they didn't pad everything out, and you're right it's JRPGs that are particularly guilty of this for some reason, dungeons that force you to do a "puzzle" that really just involves running back and forth several times or massive amounts of stop and go sequences and dialogue

Lackluster endings generally infuriate me to no end, especially final bosses.
A lot of modern games are guilty of this, especially shooters, since apparently no one knows how to design the "hardest challenge" to actually be at the end of the game. I remember playing Modern Warfare 2 and that scene where you have to escape the safehouse and hold out for the helicopter is fucking intense, since you HAVE to hold out in basically an open field with no cover and a billion enemies everywhere. That was the hardest part of the entire game, and the "ultimate boss" at the end of the game is just a fucking cutscene, where you just mash a button until you win.
Completely soured me on the game at the time, and its honestly the biggest reason I don't really play any shooters anymore.

I'll go one further and say RPG systems IN RPGs that force you to go one way to be viable or not have a shit experience, especially in MMO's or multiplayer games. It's one thing if it's because you're using a weapon that you started off with at a point midway into a game, but if you decide to use a weapon type because they look cool, it would be kind of nice if the entire group of weapons weren't gimped because, "Oh, it's just better to go with swords instead of axes because we designed the game specifically around swords!" This goes double so with classes and stats built around those classes. If you're going to make it so that only one method of play is good, you may s well just get rid of those extra choices and just go with an upgrade system of some kind.
As an add on for it, I may as well say it's even worse if Devs decide that this is perfectly fine, and nerf anything that gets even close to being competitive to the gold standard.

I wasn't talking about that, but the actual layout of the level. The wiki http://zelda.wikia.com/wiki/Weak_Wall puts it best:
<Sometimes, they do not feature cracks, but the alignment of objects nearby may hint at a Weak Wall being present.
However the wiki did remind me that there were several walls that did have a different texture indicating they were bombable. IIRC these were the only necessary walls to be bombed with the rest being optional, but I can't say that for certain.
>walls make a different sound when struck
>wasn't a feature
I distinctly remember the sound in my head even now. The wiki also corroborates this.
<In most games, when Link hits a Weak Wall with his sword, they make a different sound than when a regular wall is struck.
>From Ocarina of Time
<"Here's a secret for saving me! A wall that you can destroy with the Goron's "special crop" will sound different than a regular wall if you hit it with your sword." — Goron

this doesn't really work for games which challenge you on the long term or on consistent performance, if there's a health bar of some sorts there probably is a reason why you wouldn't savescum after every single hit you take, just because you beat a certain obstacle once doesn't mean you're good enough, true skill comes from being able to do so consistently
to put it differently, imagine how much of a ponce you would look like if you saved after every single attack in a boss fight you managed to avoid without taking damage

>If you beat an obstacle before, you'd be able to surpass it once again
You could, but it's no guarantee. Like first I'd practice each stage with savestates in Ninja Gaiden for the NES individually until I could complete them without dying, and then when I would attempt a full run without savestates I'd still choke on some of the later stages. Obviously I wasn't good enough.
Savestates would just ruin the difficulty of a game which asks for a consistent long-term performance. Savescumming in something like a strategy game has no point when your loss is the result of multiple prior mistakes piling up, and in something like an action game it invalidates the balance enforced through health bars or the like. Health bars give you some room for error, and when you exceed even that then some stricter form of punishment should naturally occur. If you savescum with like 10% HP remaining, it's obviously going to get harder later on, so you feel more inclined to savescum a sequence without taking any damage at all, thus ruining the aspect of long-term thinking because you do not have any serious punishment associated to losing all your health.

But yeah, this is a good example. The first two Ruul levels where you're playing as the Empire are okay, but the Rebel Ruul levels are awful because you don't even get a real army, just hover transports and infantry that you're expected to take on masses of vehicles with. Storywise it's supposed to be because you just defected from the Empire and the Rebellion doesn't trust you with any of their major hardware yet, but they could have done something more than that. At least Trasse lets you have Y-wings despite being no better on the ground unit front.

Artillery was way overpowered in that game. It's way overpowered in real life too if the enemy has no air support. This can make for somewhat boring fights because by the time you actually move in with your troops and vehicles, the enemy hardly has anything left. In the campaign they balanced this through clever map design, restricting the times you can use artillery and making it so the artillery pieces are easily destroyed. It wouldn't be hard to make a modded version of the game that fixes all its problems, but that's probably not going to happen.

The biggest sin is playing your first Souls game and learning you can use the same strategy all the way up to your last souls game.
It got "vaguely" prettier but the mechanics almost got less deep.

Mages Tower was fine except for the fade segment. The tower had a couple of puzzles to sidetrack yourself with on your way through, one of them giving you a pretty good 2hander early on if you go straight there from Ostagar. There was also the summoning ritual thing that gave you an extra random encounter when travelling.

It's the oldschool pre-WASD scheme. Before GUIs existed computer mice were optional, not a necessity, and it was expected that you would have your right hand on the arrow pad or number pad and your left hand on the regular letters and buttons, so keyboard schemes were fitted to that kind of usage. Even now it's still a perfectly good control scheme for games and software that don't use mice.
Actually in a lot of GUI apps, mouse-dependent controls might be easier to navigate but keyboard navigation and hotkeys are usually much faster and convenient once you get the grasp of them.

There's no mouse controls in game so even if you CAN bind the main buttons to the mouse, why would you? It basically comes down to preference of do you want to move with your left or your right hand, since both hands will be on the keyboard anyway. If you DID want to move with your left then you would have to bind the actions to something like jkl; which is even worse.

MGSV, the Dark Souls games (I at least remember 2 and 3 having this), Bloodborne. Surprisingly, Horizon Zero Dawn on the PS Quatro had some pretty neat and in-depth HUD options. You can edit nearly every element of the HUD to only appear dynamically or not at all. I was fucking shocked that HZD of all games would have the best HUD options in recent memory. Every other game I can think of just does this lazy on/off shit. It's especially insulting when games have the nerve to be 50GB bare minimum because of uncompressed textures, real time effects, and general GRAPHICS shit. Can't even get some dynamic HUD so you can enjoy the eye candy when you're not in combat.

Oh yeah, stuff like that. In HZD, the compass will only show up when your discover a new location or a campfire. XP bars only appear when you tally XP. I don't think there can be a biggest sin, because if you are already playing a game that you are going to drop for some reason, the reason would be different from case to case. So let me just vent about how Enter the gungeon is shit:
Inconsistency of game rules
>some pickups get stolen, some don't
>most stages preserve chests, some don't
>unlocks that affect gameplay meta as you progress
>some things are overly explained, some are entirely not
>some active items are single use, some are not (and there is no visual indication which is which except sometimes there is)
>HP scaling
>poison is aoe buildup, while fire aoe is instantly inflicted
>some stages have varying amounts of secret rooms, some don't
>some hallways are hallways, some hallways are rooms, some rooms are hallways
>sometimes charmed enemies focus other enemies, when there are no enemies they usually idle, except when they don't
Artificial difficulty
>cuntish preset rooms that force you to take damage until you remember the solution
>shitty visual contrast with an overall screen scenery for enemy attack animations
>exclusive item synergies
>some enemies reflect projectiles, some only deflect
>inconsistency of game rules
>inconsistent RNG
And just shitty design like
>charge only weapons
>homing bullet behavior that makes your shots less accurate in certain situations
>in some cases forced to kill first or even second boss with your starter weapon, which there are different kinds of with some being better or worse than the other, and neither being effective or fun
>borderline bullet hell game with inappropriately large hitbox
>unlocks that force you to ruin your run
>synergy of an item characteristic that requires you to kill with your equipped weapon and a game rule that environmental kills (bullet knockback) or status affliction (that can be inherent to a weapon or applied to all of your bullets) caused deaths don't count as weapon kills
And that's probably not the entirety of it. While for certain, game has fun visual design and a ton of content, I just can't deal with so much bullshit.

I can answer some of hose questions for you, but the game really should do that, so your points still stand.
The rat never steals hearts or shields IIRC, while he'll steal everything else. Weapons, items, and ammo. If a piece of gear is on a pedastal, he won't touch it. Chests are always preserved unless you break them, or they have a fuse next to them. They will explode after a short time if you don't unlock it or smash it.
But yes, I feel like luck of what weapons you get greatly affect how far you go- even more than skill to a degree.
I've been having more fun with Dead Cells. You could beat that game with just your default weapon (though it would be hard) and every time I have died I know it is because I was dumb and played wrong or not fast enough. I feel like it's been giving me a fairer shake than Gungeon.
Then again, I popped into the daily challenge and came across this giant fucking knight thing that has very quick wind-up on its attacks, often moves past you so you need to roll into where it will be, and has a very fast stomp that covers the floor in spikes. And if you run away, it teleports you back to it. I'm sure it'll be easier with a shield to parry, but god-damn.
74582d No.15290109
No game have ever committed a sin as large as Oblivion did when they came up with this one: locked level scaled unique quest rewards. Do mages guild at level 1? Get a shitty piece of trash staff that's not worth existing. Do the same mages guild at level 50? Get a pretty fucking nice staff that befits a quest reward. Oblivion actively discouraged players from EVER accepting or completing quests purely because it doled out shitty rewards unless you did the quest at a high level.

I can consistently get to forge with whatever, but the fact that item pickups are not frequent (also meaning that maxing hp rarely matters), "final boss" has fuckloads of HP and enemies HP scales is what made me (until I have deleted the game) quit halfway and just restart, ESPECIALLY, since the game favors snowballing by giving you increased rewards if you perfect a boss. Actually you can dodge roll the boss, though it is very tricky. Odds are you'll need a wolf-trap.
And Time Gates are always in the same rough area. I.e. In the Promenade it's always the first underground section, or in the Sewers its always one of the first branching paths from the entrance. For those two at least, if you've found a teleporter, you've gone too far.
I will not disagree with you on the latter points of the design however. With the exception of daily challenges, there's nothing to stop you rushing past enemies. You've only got the risk of coming across a group of enemies so large you're pinned down, you're not building up money or cells, and you probably won't find decent gear for the boss fights.
I could say it's a choice of how much you run and how much you fight, but I've not dug in deep enough to see if running is fine if you just fine a decent chest in later levels.
>>15295389
Selling doesn't even get you all that much money compared to killing enemies. I guess it's the argument between "do you eventually want to be able to sell gear for decent money, or spend your cells on something else right now?"

For the sake of clarity, I didn't unlock half of the special abilities, thus haven't tried around half of the optional stages, which in no way should undermine any of my points.

>Actually you can dodge roll the boss, though it is very tricky.
No shit, I though you just tank hits and take sippys.
The point is, in the 2nd stage he barely gives you any openings(and they are way smaller compared to 1st stage or parrying opennings) that he can at any point turn into lel stun or cast that shitty aoe that you have to wait out, which he'll likely combo into aoe ground wave and jump dash, that he can also chain into any of those actions if you don't bait him good enough. That shit's cancer without a shield or great dps equipment synergy. 2 minutes is the acceptable time for this boss (leaving me at the 10 minute mark right as I finish the stage), pass that it becomes a drag.
>Promenade and sewers have fixed timed door locations
Can you say the same for ramparts?
>You've only got the risk of coming across a group of enemies so large you're pinned down
No group of enemies can pin you down
which is the point (and if they do, you are probably shit).
>you're not building up money or cells
The point of rushing through is skipping the boring parts while ripping the timed door rewards which do net you money and cells. And you don't even need money or that much cells for your run. If you do everything right you have like 30k+ in the castle even if you go a bit careless with your spendings.
>and you probably won't find decent gear for the boss fights.
The only boss that it matters for is the first one, which any shield with a parry can be a hard counter of. Sure, you'd need at least a decent dps with that, but no one stops you from rerolling your starter or guaranteed 1st drop weapon to have 2x dmg modifier.
Past that you get 8 free minutes of exploration to either chose to get to the abyss stage or to leisurely go through towers. That and the castle are the only stages that matter for your equipment and both of them aren't timed.
>Selling doesn't even get you all that much money compared to killing enemies
>you're not building up money or cells if you rush
Can you do 2+2 for me?
>I guess it's the argument between "do you eventually want to be able to sell gear for decent money, or spend your cells on something else right now?"
No, that's not the point. In principle, if your games balance accounts for selling items, then locking that out behind run independent grind is a cancerous game design. On the other hand, if your game doesn't and it is more than a valid option, then it's just shitty design.
Excuse my tone here, I have nothing against you or you opposing me/my points, but those arguments are fucking garbage, and yes, I know that you didn't really try rushing, so if you agree that this is the problem, it would mean that whatever you were saying seemed like common sense in your context which you were simply trying to appeal to.

Introducing gimmicky genre roulettes/alternate gameplay which takes away effort, time, and resources from improving either a new or original gameplay marketed to players. Basically having little to no faith that a short but sweet and really polished game could stand well enough on its own so they cram in as many boring/frustrating fetchquests and filler levels to pad out game length. A few mini games are fine here and there, especially if they're purely optional bonus content, but not if they go overboard in cockblocking you either from progressing the game without them or 100% completion if you don't do them.

As far as gameplay elements go, excessive backtracking to increase playtime is cancer. Imagine placing respawn points 15 minutes away from bosses instead of actually making the bosses more difficult and engaging?

This.
I don't mind if it's a genuinely sympathetic character who had understandable reasons for what they were doing (especially if you're given the choice), but there's a lot of shit out there where the dickass thief/traitor/whatever is blatantly untrustworthy and antagonistic but the characters invoke some tortured logic or contrived circumstances so they can include them in the party instead of slitting their throat and leaving them for dead.
And then you're supposed to root for them as they have character development and eventually decide not to betray you after all. Jesus christ.
