I did end up using a mono-ground team in Diamond, but mono-teams aren't too difficult.
You need to pour on more limitations (no revives in battle, no X Items, can't use healing twice in a row, etc).

Competitive isn't easy- just incredibly time consuming unless you hack to make a team, then it boils down to get your stat boosts in ASAP and unleashing as much damage as possible.
The top 12 Pokemon used for competitive rarely change, the top 30 only a little more. They use the same moves nearly every damn time. The only variation is in the training so they have a few more or less points in it's stats so it can gamble on surviving certain attacks while still unloading damage.
It's not easy, but it's a strategically wide and shallow guessing game. 50 different tactics with only 2 viable. Now how much damage while my attack do now I know that last attack did roughly 30% damage, better get my fucking calculator. Gosh this is fun!
I love the franchise, but I fucking cringe when I see the sort of people that go to the competitions
And I'm horrified I'd fit right in.

They tried to solve the issue of abusing stat boosts by having each trainer only have one Pokemon.
But yeah, avoiding using Potions at all cost. Not like an NPC won't fucking heal you every 30 mins anyway or you'll be able to find a Pokemon center on a route.
